Solomon Turns from God

11Now King Solomon loved many foreign women along with the daughter of Pharaoh: Moabite, Ammonite, Edomite, Sidonian, and Hittite women,H4428H8010H157H7227H5237H802H1323H6547H4125H5984H130H6722H2850 2from the nations concerning which the LORD had said to the sons of Israel, "You shall not associate with them, neither shall they associate with you, [for] they will surely turn your heart away after their gods." Solomon held fast to these in love.H1471H3068H559H1121H3478H935H935H403H5186H3824H310H430H8010H1692H157 3And he had seven hundred wives, princesses, and three hundred concubines, and his wives turned his heart away.H7651H3967H802H8282H7969H3967H6370H802H5186H3820 4For it came about when Solomon was old, his wives turned his heart away after other gods; and his heart was not wholly devoted to the LORD his God, as the heart of David his father [had been.]H6256H8010H2209H802H5186H3824H310H312H430H3824H8003H3068H430H3824H1732H1 5For Solomon went after Ashtoreth the goddess of the Sidonians and after Milcom the detestable idol of the Ammonites.H8010H3212H310H6253H430H6722H310H4445H8251H5984 6And Solomon did what was evil in the sight of the LORD, and did not follow the LORD fully, as David his father [had done.]H8010H6213H7451H5869H3068H4390H310H3068H1732H1 7Then Solomon built a high place for Chemosh the detestable idol of Moab, on the mountain which is east of Jerusalem, and for Molech the detestable idol of the sons of Ammon.H8010H1129H1116H3645H8251H4124H2022H6440H3389H4432H8251H1121H5983 8Thus also he did for all his foreign wives, who burned incense and sacrificed to their gods.H6213H5237H802H6999H2076H430 9Now the LORD was angry with Solomon because his heart was turned away from the LORD, the God of Israel, who had appeared to him twice,H3068H599H8010H3824H5186H3068H430H3478H7200H6471 10and had commanded him concerning this thing, that he should not go after other gods; but he did not observe what the LORD had commanded.H6680H1697H3212H310H312H430H8104H3068H6680 11So the LORD said to Solomon, "Because you have done this, and you have not kept My covenant and My statutes, which I have commanded you, I will surely tear the kingdom from you, and will give it to your servant.H3068H559H8010H8104H1285H2708H6680H7167H7167H4467H5414H5650 12"Nevertheless I will not do it in your days for the sake of your father David, [but] I will tear it out of the hand of your son.H3117H6213H1732H1H7167H3027H1121 13"However, I will not tear away all the kingdom, [but] I will give one tribe to your son for the sake of My servant David and for the sake of Jerusalem which I have chosen."H7535H7167H4467H5414H259H7626H1121H1732H5650H3389H977

God Raises Adversaries

14Then the LORD raised up an adversary to Solomon, Hadad the Edomite; he was of the royal line in Edom.H3068H6965H7854H8010H1908H130H4428H2233H123 15For it came about, when David was in Edom, and Joab the commander of the army had gone up to bury the slain, and had struck down every male in EdomH1732H123H3097H8269H6635H5927H6912H2491H5221H2145H123 16(for Joab and all Israel stayed there six months, until he had cut off every male in Edom),H8337H2320H3097H3427H3478H3772H2145H123 17that Hadad fled to Egypt, he and certain Edomites of his father's servants with him, while Hadad [was] a young boy.H111H1272H582H130H1H5650H935H4714H1908H6996H5288 18And they arose from Midian and came to Paran; and they took men with them from Paran and came to Egypt, to Pharaoh king of Egypt, who gave him a house and assigned him food and gave him land.H6965H4080H935H6290H3947H582H6290H935H4714H6547H4428H4714H5414H1004H559H3899H5414H776 19Now Hadad found great favor before Pharaoh, so that he gave him in marriage the sister of his own wife, the sister of Tahpenes the queen.H1908H4672H3966H2580H5869H6547H5414H802H269H802H269H8472H1377 20And the sister of Tahpenes bore his son Genubath, whom Tahpenes weaned in Pharaoh's house; and Genubath was in Pharaoh's house among the sons of Pharaoh.H269H8472H3205H1592H1121H8472H1580H8432H6547H1004H1592H6547H1004H8432H1121H6547 21But when Hadad heard in Egypt that David slept with his fathers, and that Joab the commander of the army was dead, Hadad said to Pharaoh, "Send me away, that I may go to my own country."H1908H8085H4714H1732H7901H1H3097H8269H6635H4191H1908H559H6547H7971H3212H776 22Then Pharaoh said to him, "But what have you lacked with me, that behold, you are seeking to go to your own country?" And he answered, "Nothing; nevertheless you must surely let me go."H6547H559H2638H1245H3212H776H559H7971H7971 23God also raised up [another] adversary to him, Rezon the son of Eliada, who had fled from his lord Hadadezer king of Zobah.H430H6965H7854H7331H1121H450H1272H113H1909H4428H6678 24And he gathered men to himself and became leader of a marauding band, after David slew them of [Zobah;] and they went to Damascus and stayed there, and reigned in Damascus.H6908H582H8269H1416H1732H2026H3212H1834H3427H4427H1834 25So he was an adversary to Israel all the days of Solomon, along with the evil that Hadad [did;] and he abhorred Israel and reigned over Aram.H7854H3478H3117H8010H7451H1908H6973H3478H4427H758 26Then Jeroboam the son of Nebat, an Ephraimite of Zeredah, Solomon's servant, whose mother's name was Zeruah, a widow, also rebelled against the king.H3379H1121H5028H673H6868H8010H5650H517H8034H6871H490H802H7311H3027H4428 27Now this was the reason why he rebelled against the king: Solomon built the Millo, [and] closed up the breach of the city of his father David.H1697H7311H3027H4428H8010H1129H4407H5462H6556H5892H1732H1 28Now the man Jeroboam was a valiant warrior, and when Solomon saw that the young man was industrious, he appointed him over all the forced labor of the house of Joseph.H376H3379H1368H2428H8010H7200H5288H6213H4399H6485H5447H1004H3130 29And it came about at that time, when Jeroboam went out of Jerusalem, that the prophet Ahijah the Shilonite found him on the road. Now Ahijah had clothed himself with a new cloak; and both of them were alone in the field.H6256H3379H3318H3389H5030H281H7888H4672H1870H3680H2319H8008H8147H7704 30Then Ahijah took hold of the new cloak which was on him, and tore it into twelve pieces.H281H8610H2319H8008H7167H8147H6240H7168 31And he said to Jeroboam, "Take for yourself ten pieces; for thus says the LORD, the God of Israel, 'Behold, I will tear the kingdom out of the hand of Solomon and give you ten tribesH559H3379H3947H6235H7168H559H3068H430H3478H7167H4467H3027H8010H5414H6235H7626 32(but he will have one tribe, for the sake of My servant David and for the sake of Jerusalem, the city which I have chosen from all the tribes of Israel),H259H7626H5650H1732H3389H5892H977H7626H3478 33because they have forsaken Me, and have worshiped Ashtoreth the goddess of the Sidonians, Chemosh the god of Moab, and Milcom the god of the sons of Ammon; and they have not walked in My ways, doing what is right in My sight and [observing] My statutes and My ordinances, as his father David [did.]H5800H7812H6253H430H6722H3645H430H4124H4445H430H1121H5983H1980H1870H6213H3477H5869H2708H4941H1732H1 34'Nevertheless I will not take the whole kingdom out of his hand, but I will make him ruler all the days of his life, for the sake of My servant David whom I chose, who observed My commandments and My statutes;H3947H4467H3027H7896H5387H3117H2416H1732H5650H977H8104H4687H2708 35but I will take the kingdom from his son's hand and give it to you, [even] ten tribes.H3947H4410H1121H3027H5414H6235H7626 36'But to his son I will give one tribe, that My servant David may have a lamp always before Me in Jerusalem, the city where I have chosen for Myself to put My name.H1121H5414H259H7626H1732H5650H5216H3117H6440H3389H5892H977H7760H8034 37'And I will take you, and you shall reign over whatever you desire, and you shall be king over Israel.H3947H4427H5315H183H4428H3478 38'Then it will be, that if you listen to all that I command you and walk in My ways, and do what is right in My sight by observing My statutes and My commandments, as My servant David did, then I will be with you and build you an enduring house as I built for David, and I will give Israel to you.H8085H6680H1980H1870H6213H3477H5869H8104H2708H4687H1732H5650H6213H1129H539H1004H1129H1732H5414H3478 39'Thus I will afflict the descendants of David for this, but not always.' "H6031H2233H1732H3117 40Solomon sought therefore to put Jeroboam to death; but Jeroboam arose and fled to Egypt to Shishak king of Egypt, and he was in Egypt until the death of Solomon.H8010H1245H4191H3379H3379H6965H1272H4714H7895H4428H4714H4714H4194H8010

The Death of Solomon

41Now the rest of the acts of Solomon and whatever he did, and his wisdom, are they not written in the book of the acts of Solomon?H3499H1697H8010H6213H2451H3789H5612H1697H8010 42Thus the time that Solomon reigned in Jerusalem over all Israel was forty years.H3117H8010H4427H3389H3478H705H8141 43And Solomon slept with his fathers and was buried in the city of his father David, and his son Rehoboam reigned in his place.H8010H7901H1H6912H5892H1732H1H7346H1121H4427
