Judgment on Jeroboam

13A man of God came from Judah to Bethel by a revelation from the LORD while Jeroboam was standing beside the altar to burn incense.H935H376H430H3063H1697H3068H1008H3379H5975H4196H6999
2The man of God cried out against the altar by a revelation from the LORD: "Altar, altar, this is what the LORD says, 'A son will be born to the house of David, named Josiah, and he will sacrifice on you the priests of the high places who are burning incense on you. Human bones will be burned on you.'"H7121H4196H1697H3068H559H4196H4196H559H3068H1121H3205H1004H1732H2977H8034H2076H3548H1116H6999H120H6106H8313
3He gave a sign that day. He said, "This is the sign that the LORD has spoken: 'The altar will now be ripped apart, and the ashes that are on it will be spilled out.'"H5414H4159H3117H559H4159H3068H1696H4196H7167H1880H8210
4When the king heard the word that the man of God had cried out against the altar at Bethel, Jeroboam stretched out his hand from the altar and said, "Arrest him!" But the hand he stretched out against him withered, and he could not pull it back to himself.H4428H3379H8085H1697H376H430H7121H4196H1008H7971H3027H4196H559H8610H3027H7971H3001H3201H7725
5The altar was ripped apart, and the ashes spilled off the altar, according to the sign that the man of God had given by the word of the LORD.H4196H7167H1880H8210H4196H4159H376H430H5414H1697H3068
6Then the king responded to the man of God, "Please plead for the favor of the LORD your God and pray for me so that my hand may be restored to me." So the man of God pleaded for the favor of the LORD, and the king's hand was restored to him and became as it had been at first.H4428H6030H559H376H430H2470H6440H3068H430H6419H3027H7725H376H430H2470H6440H3068H4428H3027H7725H7223
7Then the king declared to the man of God, "Come home with me, refresh yourself, and I'll give you a reward."H4428H1696H376H430H935H1004H5582H5414H4991
8But the man of God replied, "If you were to give me half your house, I still wouldn't go with you, and I wouldn't eat bread or drink water in this place,H376H430H559H4428H5414H2677H1004H935H398H3899H8354H4325H4725
9for this is what I was commanded by the word of the LORD: 'You must not eat bread or drink water or go back the way you came.'"H6680H1697H3068H559H398H3899H8354H4325H7725H1870H1980
10So he went another way; he did not go back by the way he had come to Bethel.H3212H312H1870H7725H1870H935H1008

The Old Prophet and the Man of God

11Now a certain old prophet was living in Bethel. His son came and told him all the deeds that the man of God had done that day in Bethel. His sons also told their father the words that he had spoken to the king.H3427H259H2205H5030H1008H1121H935H5608H4639H376H430H6213H3117H1008H1697H1696H4428H5608H1
12Then their father said to them, "Which way did he go?" His sons had seen the way taken by the man of God who had come from Judah.H1H1696H1870H1980H1121H7200H335H1870H376H430H1980H935H3063
13Then he said to his sons, "Saddle the donkey for me." So they saddled the donkey for him, and he got on it.H559H1121H2280H2543H2280H2543H7392
14He followed the man of God and found him sitting under an oak tree. He asked him, "Are you the man of God who came from Judah?" "I am," he said.H3212H310H376H430H4672H3427H424H559H376H430H935H3063H559
15Then he said to him, "Come home with me and eat bread."H559H3212H1004H398H3899
16But he answered, "I cannot go back with you, eat bread, or drink water with you in this place,H559H3201H7725H935H398H3899H8354H4325H4725
17for a message came to me by the word of the LORD: 'You must not eat bread or drink water there or go back by the way you came.'"H1697H1697H3068H398H3899H8354H4325H7725H3212H1870H1980
18He said to him, "I am also a prophet like you. An angel spoke to me by the word of the LORD: 'Bring him back with you to your house so that he may eat bread and drink water.' " The old prophet deceived him,H559H5030H4397H1696H1697H3068H559H7725H1004H398H3899H8354H4325H3584
19and the man of God went back with him, ate bread in his house, and drank water.H7725H398H3899H1004H8354H4325
20While they were sitting at the table, the word of the LORD came to the prophet who had brought him back,H3427H7979H1697H3068H5030H7725
21and the prophet cried out to the man of God who had come from Judah, "This is what the LORD says: 'Because you rebelled against the command of the LORD and did not keep the commandment that the LORD your God commanded you,H7121H376H430H935H3063H559H559H3068H3282H4784H6310H3068H8104H4687H3068H430H6680
22but you went back and ate bread and drank water in the place that He said to you: Do not eat bread and do not drink water, your corpse will never reach the grave of your fathers.'"H7725H398H3899H8354H4325H4725H1696H398H3899H8354H4325H5038H935H6913H1
23So after he had eaten bread and after he had drunk, the old prophet saddled the donkey for the prophet he had brought back.H310H398H3899H310H8354H2280H2543H5030H7725
24When he left, a lion met him along the way and killed him. His corpse was thrown on the road, and the donkey was standing beside it; the lion was standing beside the corpse too.H3212H738H4672H1870H4191H5038H7993H1870H2543H5975H681H738H5975H5038
25There were men passing by who saw the corpse thrown on the road and the lion standing beside it, and they went and spoke [about it] in the city where the old prophet lived.H582H5674H7200H5038H7993H1870H738H5975H681H5038H935H1696H5892H2205H5030H3427
26When the prophet who had brought him back from his way heard [about it], he said, "He is the man of God who disobeyed the command of the LORD. The LORD has given him to the lion, and it has mauled him and killed him, according to the word of the LORD that He spoke to him."H5030H7725H1870H8085H559H376H430H4784H6310H3068H3068H5414H738H7665H4191H1697H3068H1696
27Then the old prophet instructed his sons, "Saddle the donkey for me." They saddled it,H1696H1121H559H2280H2543H2280
28and he went and found the corpse of the man of God thrown on the road with the donkey and the lion standing beside the corpse. The lion had not eaten the corpse or mauled the donkey.H3212H4672H5038H7993H1870H2543H738H5975H681H5038H738H398H5038H7665H2543
29So the prophet lifted the corpse of the man of God and laid it on the donkey and brought it back. The old prophet came into to the city to mourn and to bury him.H5030H5375H5038H376H430H3240H2543H7725H2205H5030H935H5892H5594H6912
30Then he laid the corpse in his own grave, and they mourned over him: "Oh, my brother!"H3240H5038H6913H5594H1945H251
31After he had buried him, he said to his sons, "When I die, you must bury me in the grave where the man of God is buried; lay my bones beside his bones,H310H6912H559H1121H559H4191H6912H6913H376H430H6912H3240H6106H681H6106
32for the word that he cried out by a revelation from the LORD against the altar in Bethel and against all the shrines of the high places in the cities of Samaria is certain to happen."H1697H7121H1697H3068H4196H1008H1004H1116H5892H8111
33After all this Jeroboam did not repent of his evil way but again set up priests from every class of people for the high places. Whoever so desired it, he ordained, and they became priests of the high places.H310H1697H3379H7725H7451H1870H6213H7725H7098H5971H3548H1116H2655H4390H3027H3548H1116
34For the house of Jeroboam, this was the sin that caused it to be wiped out and annihilated from the face of the earth.H1697H2403H1004H3379H3582H8045H6440H127
