Jeroboam Warned, Stricken

13Now behold, there came a man of God from Judah to Bethel by the word of the LORD, while Jeroboam was standing by the altar to burn incense.H935H376H430H3063H1697H3068H1008H3379H5975H4196H6999
2And he cried against the altar by the word of the LORD, and said, " O altar, altar, thus says the LORD, 'Behold, a son shall be born to the house of David, Josiah by name; and on you he shall sacrifice the priests of the high places who burn incense on you, and human bones shall be burned on you.' "H7121H4196H1697H3068H559H4196H4196H559H3068H1121H3205H1004H1732H2977H8034H2076H3548H1116H6999H120H6106H8313
3Then he gave a sign the same day, saying, "This is the sign which the LORD has spoken, 'Behold, the altar shall be split apart and the ashes which are on it shall be poured out.'"H5414H4159H3117H559H4159H3068H1696H4196H7167H1880H8210
4Now it came about when the king heard the saying of the man of God, which he cried against the altar in Bethel, that Jeroboam stretched out his hand from the altar, saying, "Seize him." But his hand which he stretched out against him dried up, so that he could not draw it back to himself.H4428H3379H8085H1697H376H430H7121H4196H1008H7971H3027H4196H559H8610H3027H7971H3001H3201H7725
5The altar also was split apart and the ashes were poured out from the altar, according to the sign which the man of God had given by the word of the LORD.H4196H7167H1880H8210H4196H4159H376H430H5414H1697H3068
6And the king answered and said to the man of God, "Please entreat the LORD your God, and pray for me, that my hand may be restored to me." So the man of God entreated the LORD, and the king's hand was restored to him, and it became as it was before.H4428H6030H559H376H430H2470H6440H3068H430H6419H3027H7725H376H430H2470H6440H3068H4428H3027H7725H7223
7Then the king said to the man of God, "Come home with me and refresh yourself, and I will give you a reward."H4428H1696H376H430H935H1004H5582H5414H4991
8But the man of God said to the king, "If you were to give me half your house I would not go with you, nor would I eat bread or drink water in this place.H376H430H559H4428H5414H2677H1004H935H398H3899H8354H4325H4725
9"For so it was commanded me by the word of the LORD, saying, 'You shall eat no bread, nor drink water, nor return by the way which you came.'"H6680H1697H3068H559H398H3899H8354H4325H7725H1870H1980
10So he went another way, and did not return by the way which he came to Bethel.H3212H312H1870H7725H1870H935H1008

The Disobedient Prophet

11Now an old prophet was living in Bethel; and his sons came and told him all the deeds which the man of God had done that day in Bethel; the words which he had spoken to the king, these also they related to their father.H3427H259H2205H5030H1008H1121H935H5608H4639H376H430H6213H3117H1008H1697H1696H4428H5608H1
12And their father said to them, "Which way did he go?" Now his sons had seen the way which the man of God who came from Judah had gone.H1H1696H1870H1980H1121H7200H335H1870H376H430H1980H935H3063
13Then he said to his sons, "Saddle the donkey for me." So they saddled the donkey for him and he rode away on it.H559H1121H2280H2543H2280H2543H7392
14So he went after the man of God and found him sitting under an oak; and he said to him, "Are you the man of God who came from Judah?" And he said, "I am."H3212H310H376H430H4672H3427H424H559H376H430H935H3063H559
15Then he said to him, "Come home with me and eat bread."H559H3212H1004H398H3899
16And he said, "I cannot return with you, nor go with you, nor will I eat bread or drink water with you in this place.H559H3201H7725H935H398H3899H8354H4325H4725
17"For a command [came] to me by the word of the LORD, 'You shall eat no bread, nor drink water there; do not return by going the way which you came.'"H1697H1697H3068H398H3899H8354H4325H7725H3212H1870H1980
18And he said to him, "I also am a prophet like you, and an angel spoke to me by the word of the LORD, saying, 'Bring him back with you to your house, that he may eat bread and drink water.'" [But] he lied to him.H559H5030H4397H1696H1697H3068H559H7725H1004H398H3899H8354H4325H3584
19So he went back with him, and ate bread in his house and drank water.H7725H398H3899H1004H8354H4325
20Now it came about, as they were sitting down at the table, that the word of the LORD came to the prophet who had brought him back;H3427H7979H1697H3068H5030H7725
21and he cried to the man of God who came from Judah, saying, "Thus says the LORD, 'Because you have disobeyed the command of the LORD, and have not observed the commandment which the LORD your God commanded you,H7121H376H430H935H3063H559H559H3068H3282H4784H6310H3068H8104H4687H3068H430H6680
22but have returned and eaten bread and drunk water in the place of which He said to you, "Eat no bread and drink no water"; your body shall not come to the grave of your fathers. '"H7725H398H3899H8354H4325H4725H1696H398H3899H8354H4325H5038H935H6913H1
23And it came about after he had eaten bread and after he had drunk, that he saddled the donkey for him, for the prophet whom he had brought back.H310H398H3899H310H8354H2280H2543H5030H7725
24Now when he had gone, a lion met him on the way and killed him, and his body was thrown on the road, with the donkey standing beside it; the lion also was standing beside the body.H3212H738H4672H1870H4191H5038H7993H1870H2543H5975H681H738H5975H5038
25And behold, men passed by and saw the body thrown on the road, and the lion standing beside the body; so they came and told [it] in the city where the old prophet lived.H582H5674H7200H5038H7993H1870H738H5975H681H5038H935H1696H5892H2205H5030H3427
26Now when the prophet who brought him back from the way heard [it,] he said, "It is the man of God, who disobeyed the command of the LORD; therefore the LORD has given him to the lion, which has torn him and killed him, according to the word of the LORD which He spoke to him."H5030H7725H1870H8085H559H376H430H4784H6310H3068H3068H5414H738H7665H4191H1697H3068H1696
27Then he spoke to his sons, saying, "Saddle the donkey for me." And they saddled [it.]H1696H1121H559H2280H2543H2280
28And he went and found his body thrown on the road with the donkey and the lion standing beside the body; the lion had not eaten the body nor torn the donkey.H3212H4672H5038H7993H1870H2543H738H5975H681H5038H738H398H5038H7665H2543
29So the prophet took up the body of the man of God and laid it on the donkey, and brought it back and he came to the city of the old prophet to mourn and to bury him.H5030H5375H5038H376H430H3240H2543H7725H2205H5030H935H5892H5594H6912
30And he laid his body in his own grave, and they mourned over him, [ saying,] "Alas, my brother!"H3240H5038H6913H5594H1945H251
31And it came about after he had buried him, that he spoke to his sons, saying, "When I die, bury me in the grave in which the man of God is buried; lay my bones beside his bones.H310H6912H559H1121H559H4191H6912H6913H376H430H6912H3240H6106H681H6106
32"For the thing shall surely come to pass which he cried by the word of the LORD against the altar in Bethel and against all the houses of the high places which are in the cities of Samaria."H1697H7121H1697H3068H4196H1008H1004H1116H5892H8111
33After this event Jeroboam did not return from his evil way, but again he made priests of the high places from among all the people; any who would, he ordained, to be priests of the high places.H310H1697H3379H7725H7451H1870H6213H7725H7098H5971H3548H1116H2655H4390H3027H3548H1116
34And this event became sin to the house of Jeroboam, even to blot [ it] out and destroy [it] from off the face of the earth.H1697H2403H1004H3379H3582H8045H6440H127
