David’s Instructions to Solomon

2Now the days of David drew near that he should die, and he charged Solomon his son, saying:H3117H1732H7126H4191H6680H8010H1121H559 2"I go the way of all the earth; be strong, therefore, and prove yourself a man.H1980H1870H776H2388H376 3"And keep the charge of the LORD your God: to walk in His ways, to keep His statutes, His commandments, His judgments, and His testimonies, as it is written in the Law of Moses, that you may prosper in all that you do and wherever you turn;H8104H4931H3068H430H3212H1870H8104H2708H4687H4941H5715H3789H8451H4872H7919H6213H6437 4"that the LORD may fulfill His word which He spoke concerning me, saying, 'If your sons take heed to their way, to walk before Me in truth with all their heart and with all their soul,' He said, 'you shall not lack a man on the throne of Israel.'H3068H6965H1697H1696H559H1121H8104H1870H3212H6440H571H3824H5315H3772H559H376H3678H3478 5"Moreover you know also what Joab the son of Zeruiah did to me, and what he did to the two commanders of the armies of Israel, to Abner the son of Ner and Amasa the son of Jether, whom he killed. And he shed the blood of war in peacetime, and put the blood of war on his belt that was around his waist, and on his sandals that were on his feet.H3045H3097H1121H6870H6213H6213H8147H8269H6635H3478H74H1121H5369H6021H1121H3500H2026H7760H1818H4421H7965H5414H1818H4421H2290H4975H5275H7272 6"Therefore do according to your wisdom, and do not let his gray hair go down to the grave in peace.H6213H2451H7872H3381H7585H7965 7"But show kindness to the sons of Barzillai the Gileadite, and let them be among those who eat at your table, for so they came to me when I fled from Absalom your brother.H6213H2617H1121H1271H1569H398H7979H7126H1272H6440H53H251 8"And see, you have with you Shimei the son of Gera, a Benjamite from Bahurim, who cursed me with a malicious curse in the day when I went to Mahanaim. But he came down to meet me at the Jordan, and I swore to him by the LORD, saying, 'I will not put you to death with the sword.'H8096H1121H1617H1145H980H7043H4834H7045H3117H3212H4266H3381H7125H3383H7650H3068H559H4191H2719 9"Now therefore, do not hold him guiltless, for you are a wise man and know what you ought to do to him; but bring his gray hair down to the grave with blood."H5352H2450H376H3045H6213H7872H3381H7585H1818

Death of David

10So David rested with his fathers, and was buried in the City of David.H1732H7901H1H6912H5892H1732 11The period that David reigned over Israel was forty years; seven years he reigned in Hebron, and in Jerusalem he reigned thirty-three years.H3117H1732H4427H3478H705H8141H7651H8141H4427H2275H7970H7969H8141H4427H3389 12Then Solomon sat on the throne of his father David; and his kingdom was firmly established.H3427H8010H3678H1732H1H4438H3559H3966

Solomon Executes Adonijah

13Now Adonijah the son of Haggith came to Bathsheba the mother of Solomon. So she said, "Do you come peaceably?" And he said, "Peaceably."H138H1121H2294H935H1339H517H8010H559H935H7965H559H7965 14Moreover he said, "I have something to say to you." And she said, "Say it."H559H1697H559H1696 15Then he said, "You know that the kingdom was mine, and all Israel had set their expectations on me, that I should reign. However, the kingdom has been turned over, and has become my brother's; for it was his from the LORD.H559H3045H4410H3478H7760H6440H4427H4410H5437H251H3068 16"Now I ask one petition of you; do not deny me." And she said to him, "Say it."H7592H259H7596H7725H6440H559H1696 17Then he said, "Please speak to King Solomon, for he will not refuse you, that he may give me Abishag the Shunammite as wife."H559H559H8010H4428H7725H6440H7725H5414H49H7767H802 18So Bathsheba said, "Very well, I will speak for you to the king."H1339H559H2896H1696H4428 19Bathsheba therefore went to King Solomon, to speak to him for Adonijah. And the king rose up to meet her and bowed down to her, and sat down on his throne and had a throne set for the king's mother; so she sat at his right hand.H1339H935H4428H8010H1696H138H4428H6965H7125H7812H3427H3678H3678H7760H4428H517H3427H3225 20Then she said, "I desire one small petition of you; do not refuse me." And the king said to her, "Ask it, my mother, for I will not refuse you."H559H7592H259H6996H7596H7725H6440H7725H4428H559H7592H517H7725H6440H7725 21So she said, "Let Abishag the Shunammite be given to Adonijah your brother as wife."H559H49H7767H5414H138H251H802 22And King Solomon answered and said to his mother, "Now why do you ask Abishag the Shunammite for Adonijah? Ask for him the kingdom also—for he is my older brother—for him, and for Abiathar the priest, and for Joab the son of Zeruiah."H4428H8010H6030H559H517H7592H49H7767H138H7592H4410H1419H251H54H3548H3097H1121H6870 23Then King Solomon swore by the LORD, saying, "May God do so to me, and more also, if Adonijah has not spoken this word against his own life!H4428H8010H7650H3068H559H430H6213H3254H138H1696H1697H5315 24"Now therefore, as the LORD lives, who has confirmed me and set me on the throne of David my father, and who has established a house for me, as He promised, Adonijah shall be put to death today!"H3068H2416H3559H3427H3678H1732H1H6213H1004H1696H138H4191H3117 25So King Solomon sent by the hand of Benaiah the son of Jehoiada; and he struck him down, and he died.H4428H8010H7971H3027H1141H1121H3077H6293H4191

Abiathar Exiled, Joab Executed

26And to Abiathar the priest the king said, "Go to Anathoth, to your own fields, for you are deserving of death; but I will not put you to death at this time, because you carried the ark of the Lord GOD before my father David, and because you were afflicted every time my father was afflicted."H54H3548H559H4428H3212H6068H7704H376H4194H3117H4191H5375H727H136H3069H6440H1732H1H6031H1H6031 27So Solomon removed Abiathar from being priest to the LORD, that he might fulfill the word of the LORD which He spoke concerning the house of Eli at Shiloh.H8010H1644H54H3548H3068H4390H1697H3068H1696H1004H5941H7887 28Then news came to Joab, for Joab had defected to Adonijah, though he had not defected to Absalom. So Joab fled to the tabernacle of the LORD, and took hold of the horns of the altar.H8052H935H3097H3097H5186H310H138H5186H310H53H3097H5127H168H3068H2388H7161H4196 29And King Solomon was told, "Joab has fled to the tabernacle of the LORD; there he is, by the altar." Then Solomon sent Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, saying, "Go, strike him down."H5046H4428H8010H3097H5127H168H3068H681H4196H8010H7971H1141H1121H3077H559H3212H6293 30So Benaiah went to the tabernacle of the LORD, and said to him, "Thus says the king, 'Come out!'" And he said, "No, but I will die here." And Benaiah brought back word to the king, saying, "Thus said Joab, and thus he answered me."H1141H935H168H3068H559H559H4428H3318H559H4191H1141H7725H4428H1697H7725H559H1696H3097H6030 31Then the king said to him, "Do as he has said, and strike him down and bury him, that you may take away from me and from the house of my father the innocent blood which Joab shed.H4428H559H6213H1696H6293H6912H5493H2600H1818H3097H8210H1004H1 32"So the LORD will return his blood on his head, because he struck down two men more righteous and better than he, and killed them with the sword—Abner the son of Ner, the commander of the army of Israel, and Amasa the son of Jether, the commander of the army of Judah—though my father David did not know it.H3068H7725H1818H7218H6293H8147H582H6662H2896H2026H2719H1H1732H3045H74H1121H5369H8269H6635H3478H6021H1121H3500H8269H6635H3063 33"Their blood shall therefore return upon the head of Joab and upon the head of his descendants forever. But upon David and his descendants, upon his house and his throne, there shall be peace forever from the LORD."H1818H7725H7218H3097H7218H2233H5769H1732H2233H1004H3678H7965H5704H5769H3068 34So Benaiah the son of Jehoiada went up and struck and killed him; and he was buried in his own house in the wilderness.H1141H1121H3077H5927H6293H4191H6912H1004H4057 35The king put Benaiah the son of Jehoiada in his place over the army, and the king put Zadok the priest in the place of Abiathar.H4428H5414H1141H1121H3077H6635H6659H3548H4428H5414H54

Shimei Executed

36Then the king sent and called for Shimei, and said to him, "Build yourself a house in Jerusalem and dwell there, and do not go out from there anywhere.H4428H7971H7121H8096H559H1129H1004H3389H3427H3318H575 37"For it shall be, on the day you go out and cross the Brook Kidron, know for certain you shall surely die; your blood shall be on your own head."H3117H3318H5674H5158H6939H3045H3045H4191H4191H1818H7218 38And Shimei said to the king, "The saying is good. As my lord the king has said, so your servant will do." So Shimei dwelt in Jerusalem many days.H8096H559H4428H1697H2896H113H4428H1696H5650H6213H8096H3427H3389H7227H3117 39Now it happened at the end of three years, that two slaves of Shimei ran away to Achish the son of Maachah, king of Gath. And they told Shimei, saying, "Look, your slaves are in Gath!"H7093H7969H8141H8147H5650H8096H1272H397H1121H4601H4428H1661H5046H8096H559H5650H1661 40So Shimei arose, saddled his donkey, and went to Achish at Gath to seek his slaves. And Shimei went and brought his slaves from Gath.H8096H6965H2280H2543H3212H1661H397H1245H5650H8096H3212H935H5650H1661 41And Solomon was told that Shimei had gone from Jerusalem to Gath and had come back.H5046H8010H8096H1980H3389H1661H7725 42Then the king sent and called for Shimei, and said to him, "Did I not make you swear by the LORD, and warn you, saying, 'Know for certain that on the day you go out and travel anywhere, you shall surely die'? And you said to me, 'The word I have heard is good.'H4428H7971H7121H8096H559H7650H3068H5749H559H3045H3045H3117H3318H1980H575H4191H4191H559H1697H8085H2896 43"Why then have you not kept the oath of the LORD and the commandment that I gave you?"H8104H7621H3068H4687H6680 44The king said moreover to Shimei, "You know, as your heart acknowledges, all the wickedness that you did to my father David; therefore the LORD will return your wickedness on your own head.H4428H559H8096H3045H7451H3824H3045H6213H1732H1H3068H7725H7451H7218 45"But King Solomon shall be blessed, and the throne of David shall be established before the LORD forever."H4428H8010H1288H3678H1732H3559H6440H3068H5704H5769 46So the king commanded Benaiah the son of Jehoiada; and he went out and struck him down, and he died. Thus the kingdom was established in the hand of Solomon.H4428H6680H1141H1121H3077H3318H6293H4191H4467H3559H3027H8010
