Saul is Anointed King

10Samuel took a flask of oil, poured it on Saul's head, kissed him, and said, "The Lord has anointed you commander-in-chief over his inheritance, has he not?H8050H3947H6378H8081H3332H7218H5401H559H3068H4886H5057H5159
2When you leave me today, you will find two men by Rachel's tomb in the territory of Benjamin at Zelzah. They'll tell you, 'The donkeys you went to look for have been found. Now your father has stopped worrying about the donkeys and he's anxious about you. He's asking, 'What shall I do about my son?'H3212H5978H3117H4672H8147H582H7354H6900H1366H1144H6766H559H860H1980H1245H4672H1H5203H1697H860H1672H559H6213H1121
3Then you'll go on further from there and come to the oak at Tabor. There three men going up to the Lord at Bethel will meet you. One will be herding three young goats, one will be carrying three loaves of bread, and one will be carrying a bottle of wine.H2498H1973H935H436H8396H4672H7969H582H5927H430H1008H259H5375H7969H1423H259H5375H7969H3603H3899H259H5375H5035H3196
4They'll greet you and give you two loaves of bread, which you're to accept from them.H7592H7965H5414H8147H3899H3947H3027
5"After that you will come to Gibeath-elohim where the Philistine garrison is. As you arrive there at the town, you'll meet a band of prophets coming down from the high place with a harp, tambourine, flute, and lyre being played in front of them, and they'll be prophesying.H310H935H1389H430H5333H6430H935H5892H6293H2256H5030H3381H1116H5035H8596H2485H3658H6440H5012
6The Spirit of the Lord will come upon you, and you'll prophesy with them and be changed into a different person.H7307H3068H6743H5012H2015H312H376
7When these signs occur, do whatever you want to do, because the Lord is with you.H226H935H6213H4672H3027H430
8You are to go down ahead of me to Gilgal, and then I'll come down to offer burnt offerings and to sacrifice peace offerings. You are to wait seven days until I come to you to let you know what you are to do."H3381H6440H1537H3381H5927H5930H2076H2077H8002H7651H3117H3176H935H3045H6213

The Spirit of God Comes on Saul

9Now it happened as Saul turned his back to leave Samuel, that God gave him another heart, and all these signs occurred on that day.H6437H7926H3212H8050H430H2015H312H3820H226H935H3117
10When they arrived there at Gibeah, a band of prophets was right there to meet them. The Spirit of God came upon Saul, and he prophesied along with them.H935H1389H2256H5030H7125H7307H430H6743H5012H8432
11When all those who had known Saul previously saw that he was there among the prophets prophesying, the people said to one another, "What has happened to Kish's son?Is Saul also among the prophets?"10H3045H865H8032H7200H5012H5030H5971H559H376H7453H1121H7027H7586H5030
12A man from there answered: "Now who is their father?" Therefore it became a proverb, "Is Saul also among the prophets?"H376H6030H559H1H4912H7586H5030
13When he had finished prophesying, he went to the high place.H3615H5012H935H1116
14Saul's uncle said to him and to his young man, "Where did you go?" He said, "To look for the donkeys, and when we saw that they couldn't be found, we went to Samuel."H7586H1730H559H5288H575H1980H559H1245H860H7200H369H935H8050
15Then Saul's uncle said, "Please tell me what Samuel said to you."H7586H1730H559H5046H8050H559
16Saul said to his uncle, "He actually told us that the donkeys had been found," but he did not tell him about the matter of kingship about which Samuel had spoken.H7586H559H1730H5046H5046H860H4672H1697H4410H8050H559H5046

Saul is Proclaimed King

17Samuel summoned the people to the Lord at Mizpah.H8050H6817H5971H3068H4709
18He said to the Israelites, "This is what the Lord God of Israel says: 'I brought Israel up out of Egypt, and I rescued you from the power of Egypt and from the power of all the kingdoms that were oppressing you.'H559H1121H3478H559H3068H430H3478H5927H3478H4714H5337H3027H4714H3027H4467H3905
19But today you have rejected your God who delivers you from all your troubles and difficulties. You have said, 'No! Instead, appoint a king over us.' Now present yourselves in the Lord's presence by your tribes and clans."H3117H3988H430H3467H7451H6869H559H7760H4428H3320H6440H3068H7626H505
20Samuel brought forward all the tribes of Israel, and the tribe of Benjamin was chosen.H8050H7626H3478H7126H7626H1144H3920
21Then he brought forward the tribe of Benjamin according to its families, and the family of the Matrites was chosen. Finally, Kish's son Saul was chosen, but when they looked for him, they couldn't find him.H7626H1144H7126H4940H4940H4309H3920H7586H1121H7027H3920H1245H4672
22So they inquired further of the Lord, "Has the man come here yet?" The Lord said, "He is here, hiding among the baggage."H7592H3068H376H935H1988H3068H559H2244H3627
23They ran and brought him from there. When he stood among the people, he was taller than any of the others by a head.H7323H3947H3320H8432H5971H1361H5971H7926H4605
24Then Samuel said to all the people, "Do you see the man whom the Lord has chosen? For there is no one like him among all the people." Then all the people shouted, "Long live the king!"H8050H559H5971H7200H3068H977H5971H5971H7321H559H2421H4428
25Samuel explained to the people the regulations concerning kingship. He wrote them in a scroll and placed it in the Lord's presence. Then Samuel sent all the people to their own houses.H8050H1696H5971H4941H4410H3789H5612H3240H6440H3068H8050H7971H5971H7971H376H1004
26Saul also went to his house in Gibeah, and the soldiers whose hearts God had touched went with him.H7586H1980H1004H1390H3212H2428H3820H430H5060
27But some troublemakers said, "How can this man deliver us?" They despised him and did not bring him a gift. But Saul remained silent.H1121H1100H559H3467H959H935H4503H2790

The Ammonites Threaten Jabesh-gilead

28Meanwhile, Nahash, king of the Ammonites, had been severely oppressing the Gadites and Reubenites, gouging out their right eyes and not allowing Israel to have a deliverer. No one was left among the Israelites across the Jordan whose right eye Nahash, king of the Ammonites, had not gouged out. However, 7,000 men had escaped from the Ammonites and entered Jabesh-gilead.
