Saul’s Unlawful Sacrifice

13Saul reigned one year; and when he had reigned two years over Israel,H7586H4427H1121H8141H4427H8147H8141H3478 2Saul chose for himself three thousand men of Israel. Two thousand were with Saul in Michmash and in the mountains of Bethel, and a thousand were with Jonathan in Gibeah of Benjamin. The rest of the people he sent away, every man to his tent.H7586H977H7969H505H3478H505H7586H4363H2022H1008H505H3129H1390H1144H3499H5971H7971H376H168 3And Jonathan attacked the garrison of the Philistines that was in Geba, and the Philistines heard of it. Then Saul blew the trumpet throughout all the land, saying, "Let the Hebrews hear!"H3129H5221H5333H6430H1387H6430H8085H7586H8628H7782H776H559H5680H8085 4Now all Israel heard it said that Saul had attacked a garrison of the Philistines, and that Israel had also become an abomination to the Philistines. And the people were called together to Saul at Gilgal.H3478H8085H559H7586H5221H5333H6430H3478H887H6430H5971H6817H310H7586H1537 5Then the Philistines gathered together to fight with Israel, thirty thousand chariots and six thousand horsemen, and people as the sand which is on the seashore in multitude. And they came up and encamped in Michmash, to the east of Beth Aven.H6430H622H3898H3478H7970H505H7393H8337H505H6571H5971H2344H3220H8193H7230H5927H2583H4363H6926H1007 6When the men of Israel saw that they were in danger (for the people were distressed), then the people hid in caves, in thickets, in rocks, in holes, and in pits.H376H3478H7200H6887H5971H5065H5971H2244H4631H2337H5553H6877H953 7And some of the Hebrews crossed over the Jordan to the land of Gad and Gilead. As for Saul, he was still in Gilgal, and all the people followed him trembling.H5680H5674H3383H776H1410H1568H7586H1537H5971H310H2729 8Then he waited seven days, according to the time set by Samuel. But Samuel did not come to Gilgal; and the people were scattered from him.H3176H3176H7651H3117H4150H8050H8050H935H1537H5971H6327 9So Saul said, "Bring a burnt offering and peace offerings here to me." And he offered the burnt offering.H7586H559H5066H5930H8002H5927H5930 10Now it happened, as soon as he had finished presenting the burnt offering, that Samuel came; and Saul went out to meet him, that he might greet him.H3615H5927H5930H8050H935H7586H3318H7125H1288 11And Samuel said, "What have you done?" And Saul said, "When I saw that the people were scattered from me, and that you did not come within the days appointed, and that the Philistines gathered together at Michmash,H8050H559H6213H7586H559H7200H5971H5310H935H3117H4150H6430H622H4363 12"then I said, 'The Philistines will now come down on me at Gilgal, and I have not made supplication to the LORD.' Therefore I felt compelled, and offered a burnt offering."H559H6430H3381H1537H2470H6440H3068H662H5927H5930 13And Samuel said to Saul, "You have done foolishly. You have not kept the commandment of the LORD your God, which He commanded you. For now the LORD would have established your kingdom over Israel forever.H8050H559H7586H5528H8104H4687H3068H430H6680H3068H3559H4467H3478H5704H5769 14"But now your kingdom shall not continue. The LORD has sought for Himself a man after His own heart, and the LORD has commanded him to be commander over His people, because you have not kept what the LORD commanded you."H4467H6965H3068H1245H376H3824H3068H6680H5057H5971H8104H3068H6680 15Then Samuel arose and went up from Gilgal to Gibeah of Benjamin. And Saul numbered the people present with him, about six hundred men.H8050H6965H5927H1537H1390H1144H7586H6485H5971H4672H8337H3967H376

No Weapons for the Army

16Saul, Jonathan his son, and the people present with them remained in Gibeah of Benjamin. But the Philistines encamped in Michmash.H7586H3129H1121H5971H4672H3427H1387H1144H6430H2583H4363 17Then raiders came out of the camp of the Philistines in three companies. One company turned to the road to Ophrah, to the land of Shual,H7843H3318H4264H6430H7969H7218H259H7218H6437H1870H6084H776H7777 18another company turned to the road to Beth Horon, and another company turned to the road of the border that overlooks the Valley of Zeboim toward the wilderness.H259H7218H6437H1870H1032H259H7218H6437H1870H1366H8259H1516H6650H4057 19Now there was no blacksmith to be found throughout all the land of Israel, for the Philistines said, "Lest the Hebrews make swords or spears."H2796H4672H776H3478H6430H559H5680H6213H2719H2595 20But all the Israelites would go down to the Philistines to sharpen each man's plowshare, his mattock, his ax, and his sickle;H3478H3381H6430H3913H376H4282H855H7134H4281 21and the charge for a sharpening was a pim for the plowshares, the mattocks, the forks, and the axes, and to set the points of the goads.H6477H6310H4281H855H7969H7053H7134H5324H1861 22So it came about, on the day of battle, that there was neither sword nor spear found in the hand of any of the people who were with Saul and Jonathan. But they were found with Saul and Jonathan his son.H3117H4421H2719H2595H4672H3027H5971H7586H3129H7586H3129H1121H4672 23And the garrison of the Philistines went out to the pass of Michmash.H4673H6430H3318H4569H4363
