1Samuel 14
New International Version Help
14One day Jonathan son of Saul said to the young man bearing his armor, "Come, let's go over to the Philistine outpost on the other side." But he did not tell his father.H3117H3129H1121H7586H559H5288H5375H3627H3212H5674H6430H4673H5676H1975H5046H1 2Saul was staying on the outskirts of Gibeah under a pomegranate tree in Migron. With him were about six hundred men,H7586H3427H7097H1390H7416H4051H5971H8337H3967H376 3among whom was Ahijah, who was wearing an ephod. He was a son of Ichabod's brother Ahitub son of Phinehas, the son of Eli, the LORD'S priest in Shiloh. No one was aware that Jonathan had left.H281H1121H285H350H251H1121H6372H1121H5941H3068H3548H7887H5375H646H5971H3045H3129H1980 4On each side of the pass that Jonathan intended to cross to reach the Philistine outpost was a cliff; one was called Bozez, and the other Seneh.H4569H3129H1245H5674H6430H4673H8127H5553H5676H8127H5553H5676H8034H259H949H8034H259H5573 5One cliff stood to the north toward Micmash, the other to the south toward Geba.H8127H259H4690H6828H4136H4363H259H5045H4136H1387 6Jonathan said to his young armor-bearer, "Come, let's go over to the outpost of those uncircumcised fellows. Perhaps the LORD will act in our behalf. Nothing can hinder the LORD from saving, whether by many or by few."H3083H559H5288H5375H3627H3212H5674H4673H6189H3068H6213H4622H3068H3467H7227H4592 7"Do all that you have in mind," his armor-bearer said. "Go ahead; I am with you heart and soul."H5375H3627H559H6213H3824H5186H3824 8Jonathan said, "Come, then; we will cross over toward the men and let them see us.H559H3083H5674H582H1540 9If they say to us, 'Wait there until we come to you,' we will stay where we are and not go up to them.H559H1826H5060H5975H5927 10But if they say, 'Come up to us,' we will climb up, because that will be our sign that the LORD has given them into our hands."H559H5927H5927H3068H5414H3027H226 11So both of them showed themselves to the Philistine outpost. "Look!" said the Philistines. "The Hebrews are crawling out of the holes they were hiding in."H8147H1540H4673H6430H6430H559H5680H3318H2356H2244 12The men of the outpost shouted to Jonathan and his armor-bearer, "Come up to us and we'll teach you a lesson." So Jonathan said to his armor-bearer, "Climb up after me; the LORD has given them into the hand of Israel."H582H4675H6030H3129H5375H3627H559H5927H3045H1697H3129H559H5375H3627H5927H310H3068H5414H3027H3478 13Jonathan climbed up, using his hands and feet, with his armor-bearer right behind him. The Philistines fell before Jonathan, and his armor-bearer followed and killed behind him.H3129H5927H3027H7272H5375H3627H310H5307H6440H3129H5375H3627H4191H310 14In that first attack Jonathan and his armor-bearer killed some twenty men in an area of about half an acre.H7223H4347H3129H5375H3627H5221H6242H376H2677H4618H7704H6776

Israel Routs the Philistines

15Then panic struck the whole army—those in the camp and field, and those in the outposts and raiding parties—and the ground shook. It was a panic sent by God.H2731H4264H7704H5971H4673H7843H2729H776H7264H430H2731 16Saul's lookouts at Gibeah in Benjamin saw the army melting away in all directions.H6822H7586H1390H1144H7200H1995H4127H3212H1986 17Then Saul said to the men who were with him, "Muster the forces and see who has left us." When they did, it was Jonathan and his armor-bearer who were not there.H559H7586H5971H6485H7200H1980H6485H3129H5375H3627 18Saul said to Ahijah, "Bring the ark of God." (At that time it was with the Israelites.)H7586H559H281H5066H727H430H727H430H3117H1121H3478 19While Saul was talking to the priest, the tumult in the Philistine camp increased more and more. So Saul said to the priest, "Withdraw your hand."H7586H1696H3548H1995H4264H6430H3212H1980H7227H7586H559H3548H622H3027 20Then Saul and all his men assembled and went to the battle. They found the Philistines in total confusion, striking each other with their swords.H7586H5971H2199H935H4421H376H2719H7453H3966H1419H4103 21Those Hebrews who had previously been with the Philistines and had gone up with them to their camp went over to the Israelites who were with Saul and Jonathan.H5680H6430H865H8032H5927H4264H5439H3478H7586H3129 22When all the Israelites who had hidden in the hill country of Ephraim heard that the Philistines were on the run, they joined the battle in hot pursuit.H376H3478H2244H2022H669H8085H6430H5127H1692H310H4421 23So the LORD rescued Israel that day, and the battle moved on beyond Beth Aven.H3068H3467H3478H3117H4421H5674H1007

Jonathan Eats Honey

24Now the men of Israel were in distress that day, because Saul had bound the people under an oath, saying, "Cursed be any man who eats food before evening comes, before I have avenged myself on my enemies!" So none of the troops tasted food.H376H3478H5065H3117H7586H422H5971H559H779H376H398H3899H6153H5358H341H5971H2938H3899 25The entire army entered the woods, and there was honey on the ground.H776H935H3293H1706H6440H7704 26When they went into the woods, they saw the honey oozing out, yet no one put his hand to his mouth, because they feared the oath.H5971H935H3293H1706H1982H5381H3027H6310H5971H3372H7621 27But Jonathan had not heard that his father had bound the people with the oath, so he reached out the end of the staff that was in his hand and dipped it into the honeycomb. He raised his hand to his mouth, and his eyes brightened.H3129H8085H1H7650H5971H7650H7971H7097H4294H3027H2881H3295H1706H7725H3027H6310H5869H215 28Then one of the soldiers told him, "Your father bound the army under a strict oath, saying, 'Cursed be any man who eats food today!' That is why the men are faint."H6030H376H5971H559H1H7650H7650H5971H7650H559H779H376H398H3899H3117H5971H5774 29Jonathan said, "My father has made trouble for the country. See how my eyes brightened when I tasted a little of this honey.H559H3129H1H5916H776H7200H5869H215H2938H4592H1706 30How much better it would have been if the men had eaten today some of the plunder they took from their enemies. Would not the slaughter of the Philistines have been even greater?"H637H3863H5971H398H398H3117H7998H341H4672H7235H4347H6430 31That day, after the Israelites had struck down the Philistines from Micmash to Aijalon, they were exhausted.H5221H6430H3117H4363H357H5971H3966H5774 32They pounced on the plunder and, taking sheep, cattle and calves, they butchered them on the ground and ate them, together with the blood.H5971H5860H6213H7998H3947H6629H1241H1121H7819H776H5971H398H1818 33Then someone said to Saul, "Look, the men are sinning against the LORD by eating meat that has blood in it." "You have broken faith," he said. "Roll a large stone over here at once."H5046H7586H559H5971H2398H3068H398H1818H559H898H1556H1419H68H3117 34Then he said, "Go out among the men and tell them, 'Each of you bring me your cattle and sheep, and slaughter them here and eat them. Do not sin against the LORD by eating meat with blood still in it.'" So everyone brought his ox that night and slaughtered it there.H7586H559H6327H5971H559H5066H376H7794H376H7716H7819H398H2398H3068H398H1818H5971H5066H376H7794H3027H3915H7819 35Then Saul built an altar to the LORD; it was the first time he had done this.H7586H1129H4196H3068H2490H4196H1129H3068 36Saul said, "Let us go down after the Philistines by night and plunder them till dawn, and let us not leave one of them alive." "Do whatever seems best to you," they replied. But the priest said, "Let us inquire of God here."H7586H559H3381H310H6430H3915H962H1242H216H7604H376H559H6213H5869H2896H559H3548H7126H1988H430 37So Saul asked God, "Shall I go down after the Philistines? Will you give them into Israel's hand?" But God did not answer him that day.H7586H7592H430H3381H310H6430H5414H3027H3478H6030H3117 38Saul therefore said, "Come here, all you who are leaders of the army, and let us find out what sin has been committed today.H7586H559H5066H1988H6438H5971H3045H7200H4100H2403H3117 39As surely as the LORD who rescues Israel lives, even if it lies with my son Jonathan, he must die." But not one of the men said a word.H3068H2416H3467H3478H3426H3129H1121H4191H4191H5971H6030 40Saul then said to all the Israelites, "You stand over there; I and Jonathan my son will stand over here." "Do what seems best to you," the men replied.H559H3478H259H5676H3129H1121H259H5676H5971H559H7586H6213H5869H2896 41Then Saul prayed to the LORD, the God of Israel, "Give me the right answer." And Jonathan and Saul were taken by lot, and the men were cleared.H7586H559H3068H430H3478H3051H8549H7586H3129H3920H5971H3318 42Saul said, "Cast the lot between me and Jonathan my son." And Jonathan was taken.H7586H559H5307H3129H1121H3129H3920 43Then Saul said to Jonathan, "Tell me what you have done." So Jonathan told him, "I merely tasted a little honey with the end of my staff. And now must I die?"H7586H559H3129H5046H6213H3129H5046H559H2938H2938H4592H1706H7097H4294H3027H2009H4191 44Saul said, "May God deal with me, be it ever so severely, if you do not die, Jonathan."H7586H559H430H6213H3254H4191H4191H3129 45But the men said to Saul, "Should Jonathan die—he who has brought about this great deliverance in Israel? Never! As surely as the LORD lives, not a hair of his head will fall to the ground, for he did this today with God's help." So the men rescued Jonathan, and he was not put to death.H5971H559H7586H3129H4191H6213H1419H3444H3478H2486H3068H2416H8185H7218H5307H776H6213H430H3117H5971H6299H3129H4191 46Then Saul stopped pursuing the Philistines, and they withdrew to their own land.H7586H5927H310H6430H6430H1980H4725 47After Saul had assumed rule over Israel, he fought against their enemies on every side: Moab, the Ammonites, Edom, the kings of Zobah, and the Philistines. Wherever he turned, he inflicted punishment on them.H7586H3920H4410H3478H3898H341H5439H4124H1121H5983H123H4428H6678H6430H6437H7561 48He fought valiantly and defeated the Amalekites, delivering Israel from the hands of those who had plundered them.H6213H2428H5221H6002H5337H3478H3027H8154
