1Samuel 18
New International Version (1984) Help
18After David had finished talking with Saul, Jonathan became one in spirit with David, and he loved him as himself.H3615H1696H7586H5315H3083H7194H5315H1732H3083H157H5315 2From that day Saul kept David with him and did not let him return to his father's house.H7586H3947H3117H5414H7725H1H1004 3And Jonathan made a covenant with David because he loved him as himself.H3083H1732H3772H1285H160H5315 4Jonathan took off the robe he was wearing and gave it to David, along with his tunic, and even his sword, his bow and his belt.H3083H6584H4598H5414H1732H4055H2719H7198H2289 5Whatever Saul sent him to do, David did it so successfully that Saul gave him a high rank in the army. This pleased all the people, and Saul's officers as well.H1732H3318H7586H7971H7919H7586H7760H582H4421H3190H5869H5971H5869H7586H5650 6When the men were returning home after David had killed the Philistine, the women came out from all the towns of Israel to meet King Saul with singing and dancing, with joyful songs and with tambourines and lutes.H935H1732H7725H5221H6430H802H3318H5892H3478H7891H4246H7125H4428H7586H8596H8057H7991 7As they danced, they sang: "Saul has slain his thousands, and David his tens of thousands."H802H6030H7832H559H7586H5221H505H1732H7233 8Saul was very angry; this refrain galled him. "They have credited David with tens of thousands," he thought, "but me with only thousands. What more can he get but the kingdom?"H7586H3966H2734H1697H3415H5869H559H5414H1732H7233H5414H505H4410 9And from that time on Saul kept a jealous eye on David.H7586H5770H1732H3117H1973 10The next day an evil spirit from God came forcefully upon Saul. He was prophesying in his house, while David was playing the harp, as he usually did. Saul had a spear in his handH4283H7451H7307H430H6743H7586H5012H8432H1004H1732H5059H3027H3117H2595H7586H3027 11and he hurled it, saying to himself, "I'll pin David to the wall." But David eluded him twice.H7586H2904H2595H559H5221H1732H7023H1732H5437H6440H6471 12Saul was afraid of David, because the LORD was with David but had left Saul.H7586H3372H6440H1732H3068H5493H7586 13So he sent David away from him and gave him command over a thousand men, and David led the troops in their campaigns.H7586H5493H7760H8269H505H3318H935H6440H5971 14In everything he did he had great success, because the LORD was with him.H1732H7919H1870H3068 15When Saul saw how successful he was, he was afraid of him.H7586H7200H7919H3966H7919H1481H6440 16But all Israel and Judah loved David, because he led them in their campaigns.H3478H3063H157H1732H3318H935H6440 17Saul said to David, "Here is my older daughter Merab. I will give her to you in marriage; only serve me bravely and fight the battles of the LORD." For Saul said to himself, "I will not raise a hand against him. Let the Philistines do that!"H7586H559H1732H1419H1323H4764H5414H802H1121H2428H3898H3068H4421H7586H559H3027H3027H6430 18But David said to Saul, "Who am I, and what is my family or my father's clan in Israel, that I should become the king's son-in-law?"H1732H559H7586H2416H1H4940H3478H2860H4428 19So when the time came for Merab, Saul's daughter, to be given to David, she was given in marriage to Adriel of Meholah.H6256H4764H7586H1323H5414H1732H5414H5741H4259H802 20Now Saul's daughter Michal was in love with David, and when they told Saul about it, he was pleased.H4324H7586H1323H157H1732H5046H7586H1697H3474H5869 21"I will give her to him," he thought, "so that she may be a snare to him and so that the hand of the Philistines may be against him." So Saul said to David, "Now you have a second opportunity to become my son-in-law."H7586H559H5414H4170H3027H6430H7586H559H1732H3117H2859H8147 22Then Saul ordered his attendants: "Speak to David privately and say, 'Look, the king is pleased with you, and his attendants all like you; now become his son-in-law.'"H7586H6680H5650H1696H1732H3909H559H4428H2654H5650H157H4428H2859 23They repeated these words to David. But David said, "Do you think it is a small matter to become the king's son-in-law? I'm only a poor man and little known."H7586H5650H1696H1697H241H1732H1732H559H5869H7043H4428H2859H7326H376H7034 24When Saul's servants told him what David had said,H5650H7586H5046H559H1697H1696H1732 25Saul replied, "Say to David, 'The king wants no other price for the bride than a hundred Philistine foreskins, to take revenge on his enemies.'" Saul's plan was to have David fall by the hands of the Philistines.H7586H559H559H1732H4428H2656H4119H3967H6190H6430H5358H4428H341H7586H2803H1732H5307H3027H6430 26When the attendants told David these things, he was pleased to become the king's son-in-law. So before the allotted time elapsed,H5650H5046H1732H1697H3474H1697H5869H1732H4428H2859H3117H4390 27David and his men went out and killed two hundred Philistines. He brought their foreskins and presented the full number to the king so that he might become the king's son-in-law. Then Saul gave him his daughter Michal in marriage.H1732H6965H3212H582H5221H6430H3967H376H1732H935H6190H4390H4428H4428H2859H7586H5414H4324H1323H802 28When Saul realized that the LORD was with David and that his daughter Michal loved David,H7586H7200H3045H3068H1732H4324H7586H1323H157 29Saul became still more afraid of him, and he remained his enemy the rest of his days.H7586H3254H3372H6440H1732H7586H1732H341H3117 30The Philistine commanders continued to go out to battle, and as often as they did, David met with more success than the rest of Saul's officers, and his name became well known.H8269H6430H3318H1767H3318H1732H7919H5650H7586H8034H3966H3365
