Jonathan and David

18Now it came about when he had finished speaking to Saul, that the soul of Jonathan was knit to the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as himself.H3615H1696H7586H5315H3083H7194H5315H1732H3083H157H5315 2And Saul took him that day and did not let him return to his father's house.H7586H3947H3117H5414H7725H1H1004 3Then Jonathan made a covenant with David because he loved him as himself.H3083H1732H3772H1285H160H5315 4And Jonathan stripped himself of the robe that was on him and gave it to David, with his armor, including his sword and his bow and his belt.H3083H6584H4598H5414H1732H4055H2719H7198H2289 5So David went out wherever Saul sent him, [and] prospered; and Saul set him over the men of war. And it was pleasing in the sight of all the people and also in the sight of Saul's servants.H1732H3318H7586H7971H7919H7586H7760H582H4421H3190H5869H5971H5869H7586H5650 6And it happened as they were coming, when David returned from killing the Philistine, that the women came out of all the cities of Israel, singing and dancing, to meet King Saul, with tambourines, with joy and with musical instruments.H935H1732H7725H5221H6430H802H3318H5892H3478H7891H4246H7125H4428H7586H8596H8057H7991 7And the women sang as they played, and said, "Saul has slain his thousands, And David his ten thousands."H802H6030H7832H559H7586H5221H505H1732H7233 8Then Saul became very angry, for this saying displeased him; and he said, "They have ascribed to David ten thousands, but to me they have ascribed thousands. Now what more can he have but the kingdom?"H7586H3966H2734H1697H3415H5869H559H5414H1732H7233H5414H505H4410 9And Saul looked at David with suspicion from that day on.H7586H5770H1732H3117H1973

Saul Turns against David

10Now it came about on the next day that an evil spirit from God came mightily upon Saul, and he raved in the midst of the house, while David was playing [the harp] with his hand, as usual; and a spear [was] in Saul's hand.H4283H7451H7307H430H6743H7586H5012H8432H1004H1732H5059H3027H3117H2595H7586H3027 11And Saul hurled the spear for he thought, "I will pin David to the wall." But David escaped from his presence twice.H7586H2904H2595H559H5221H1732H7023H1732H5437H6440H6471 12Now Saul was afraid of David, for the LORD was with him but had departed from Saul.H7586H3372H6440H1732H3068H5493H7586 13Therefore Saul removed him from his presence, and appointed him as his commander of a thousand; and he went out and came in before the people.H7586H5493H7760H8269H505H3318H935H6440H5971 14And David was prospering in all his ways for the LORD [was] with him.H1732H7919H1870H3068 15When Saul saw that he was prospering greatly, he dreaded him.H7586H7200H7919H3966H7919H1481H6440 16But all Israel and Judah loved David, and he went out and came in before them.H3478H3063H157H1732H3318H935H6440 17Then Saul said to David, "Here is my older daughter Merab; I will give her to you as a wife, only be a valiant man for me and fight the Lord's battles." For Saul thought, "My hand shall not be against him, but let the hand of the Philistines be against him."H7586H559H1732H1419H1323H4764H5414H802H1121H2428H3898H3068H4421H7586H559H3027H3027H6430 18But David said to Saul, "Who am I, and what is my life [or] my father's family in Israel, that I should be the king's son-in-law?"H1732H559H7586H2416H1H4940H3478H2860H4428 19So it came about at the time when Merab, Saul's daughter, should have been given to David, that she was given to Adriel the Meholathite for a wife.H6256H4764H7586H1323H5414H1732H5414H5741H4259H802

David Marries Saul’s Daughter

20Now Michal, Saul's daughter, loved David. When they told Saul, the thing was agreeable to him.H4324H7586H1323H157H1732H5046H7586H1697H3474H5869 21And Saul thought, "I will give her to him that she may become a snare to him, and that the hand of the Philistines may be against him." Therefore Saul said to David, "For a second time you may be my son-in-law today."H7586H559H5414H4170H3027H6430H7586H559H1732H3117H2859H8147 22Then Saul commanded his servants, "Speak to David secretly, saying, 'Behold, the king delights in you, and all his servants love you; now therefore, become the king's son-in-law.'"H7586H6680H5650H1696H1732H3909H559H4428H2654H5650H157H4428H2859 23So Saul's servants spoke these words to David. But David said, "Is it trivial in your sight to become the king's son-in-law, since I am a poor man and lightly esteemed?"H7586H5650H1696H1697H241H1732H1732H559H5869H7043H4428H2859H7326H376H7034 24And the servants of Saul reported to him according to these words [ which] David spoke.H5650H7586H5046H559H1697H1696H1732 25Saul then said, "Thus you shall say to David, 'The king does not desire any dowry except a hundred foreskins of the Philistines, to take vengeance on the king's enemies.'" Now Saul planned to make David fall by the hand of the Philistines.H7586H559H559H1732H4428H2656H4119H3967H6190H6430H5358H4428H341H7586H2803H1732H5307H3027H6430 26When his servants told David these words, it pleased David to become the king's son-in-law. Before the days had expiredH5650H5046H1732H1697H3474H1697H5869H1732H4428H2859H3117H4390 27David rose up and went, he and his men, and struck down two hundred men among the Philistines. Then David brought their foreskins, and they gave them in full number to the king, that he might become the king's son-in-law. So Saul gave him Michal his daughter for a wife.H1732H6965H3212H582H5221H6430H3967H376H1732H935H6190H4390H4428H4428H2859H7586H5414H4324H1323H802 28When Saul saw and knew that the LORD was with David, and [that] Michal, Saul's daughter, loved him,H7586H7200H3045H3068H1732H4324H7586H1323H157 29then Saul was even more afraid of David. Thus Saul was David's enemy continually.H7586H3254H3372H6440H1732H7586H1732H341H3117 30Then the commanders of the Philistines went out [to battle], and it happened as often as they went out, that David behaved himself more wisely than all the servants of Saul. So his name was highly esteemed.H8269H6430H3318H1767H3318H1732H7919H5650H7586H8034H3966H3365
