The Family of Elkanah

1Now there was a certain man of Ramathaim Zophim, of the mountains of Ephraim, and his name was Elkanah the son of Jeroham, the son of Elihu, the son of Tohu, the son of Zuph, an Ephraimite.H259H376H7436H2022H669H8034H511H1121H3395H1121H453H1121H8459H1121H6689H673 2And he had two wives: the name of one was Hannah, and the name of the other Peninnah. Peninnah had children, but Hannah had no children.H8147H802H8034H259H2584H8034H8145H6444H6444H3206H2584H3206 3This man went up from his city yearly to worship and sacrifice to the LORD of hosts in Shiloh. Also the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, the priests of the LORD, were there.H1931H376H5927H5892H3117H3117H7812H2076H3068H6635H7887H8147H1121H5941H2652H6372H3548H3068 4And whenever the time came for Elkanah to make an offering, he would give portions to Peninnah his wife and to all her sons and daughters.H3117H511H2076H5414H6444H802H1121H1323H4490 5But to Hannah he would give a double portion, for he loved Hannah, although the LORD had closed her womb.H2584H5414H259H639H4490H157H2584H3068H5462H7358 6And her rival also provoked her severely, to make her miserable, because the LORD had closed her womb.H6869H3707H3708H7481H3068H5462H1157H7358 7So it was, year by year, when she went up to the house of the LORD, that she provoked her; therefore she wept and did not eat.H6213H8141H8141H1767H5927H1004H3068H3707H1058H398

Hannah’s Vow

8Then Elkanah her husband said to her, "Hannah, why do you weep? Why do you not eat? And why is your heart grieved? Am I not better to you than ten sons?"H559H511H376H2584H1058H398H3824H3415H2896H6235H1121 9So Hannah arose after they had finished eating and drinking in Shiloh. Now Eli the priest was sitting on the seat by the doorpost of the tabernacle of the LORD.H2584H6965H310H398H7887H310H8354H5941H3548H3427H3678H4201H1964H3068 10And she was in bitterness of soul, and prayed to the LORD and wept in anguish.H4751H5315H6419H3068H1058H1058 11Then she made a vow and said, "O LORD of hosts, if You will indeed look on the affliction of Your maidservant and remember me, and not forget Your maidservant, but will give Your maidservant a male child, then I will give him to the LORD all the days of his life, and no razor shall come upon his head."H5087H5088H559H3068H6635H7200H7200H6040H519H2142H7911H519H5414H519H582H2233H5414H3068H3117H2416H4177H5927H7218 12And it happened, as she continued praying before the LORD, that Eli watched her mouth.H7235H6419H6440H3068H5941H8104H6310 13Now Hannah spoke in her heart; only her lips moved, but her voice was not heard. Therefore Eli thought she was drunk.H2584H1696H3820H8193H5128H6963H8085H5941H2803H7910 14So Eli said to her, "How long will you be drunk? Put your wine away from you!"H5941H559H7937H5493H3196 15And Hannah answered and said, "No, my lord, I am a woman of sorrowful spirit. I have drunk neither wine nor intoxicating drink, but have poured out my soul before the LORD.H2584H6030H559H113H802H7186H7307H8354H3196H7941H8210H5315H6440H3068 16"Do not consider your maidservant a wicked woman, for out of the abundance of my complaint and grief I have spoken until now."H5414H519H6440H1323H1100H7230H7879H3708H1696 17Then Eli answered and said, "Go in peace, and the God of Israel grant your petition which you have asked of Him."H5941H6030H559H3212H7965H430H3478H5414H7596H7592 18And she said, "Let your maidservant find favor in your sight." So the woman went her way and ate, and her face was no longer sad.H559H8198H4672H2580H5869H802H3212H1870H398H6440

Samuel Is Born and Dedicated

19Then they rose early in the morning and worshiped before the LORD, and returned and came to their house at Ramah. And Elkanah knew Hannah his wife, and the LORD remembered her.H7925H1242H7925H7812H6440H3068H7725H935H1004H7414H511H3045H2584H802H3068H2142 20So it came to pass in the process of time that Hannah conceived and bore a son, and called his name Samuel, saying, "Because I have asked for him from the LORD."H3117H8622H2584H2029H3205H1121H7121H8034H8050H7592H3068 21Now the man Elkanah and all his house went up to offer to the LORD the yearly sacrifice and his vow.H376H511H1004H5927H2076H3068H3117H2077H5088 22But Hannah did not go up, for she said to her husband, "Not until the child is weaned; then I will take him, that he may appear before the LORD and remain there forever."H2584H5927H559H376H5288H1580H935H7200H6440H3068H3427H5704H5769 23And Elkanah her husband said to her, "Do what seems best to you; wait until you have weaned him. Only let the LORD establish His word." So the woman stayed and nursed her son until she had weaned him.H511H376H559H6213H5869H2896H3427H1580H3068H6965H1697H802H3427H1121H3243H1580 24Now when she had weaned him, she took him up with her, with three bulls, one ephah of flour, and a skin of wine, and brought him to the house of the LORD in Shiloh. And the child was young.H1580H5927H7969H6499H259H374H7058H5035H3196H935H1004H3068H7887H5288H5288 25Then they slaughtered a bull, and brought the child to Eli.H7819H6499H935H5288H5941 26And she said, "O my lord! As your soul lives, my lord, I am the woman who stood by you here, praying to the LORD.H559H994H113H5315H2416H113H802H5324H6419H3068 27"For this child I prayed, and the LORD has granted me my petition which I asked of Him.H5288H6419H3068H5414H7596H7592 28"Therefore I also have lent him to the LORD; as long as he lives he shall be lent to the LORD." So they worshiped the LORD there.H7592H3068H3117H7592H3068H7812H3068
