Jonathan’s Loyalty to David

20Then David fled from Naioth in Ramah, and went and said to Jonathan, "What have I done? What is my iniquity, and what is my sin before your father, that he seeks my life?"H1732H1272H5121H7414H935H559H6440H3083H6213H5771H2403H6440H1H1245H5315 2So Jonathan said to him, "By no means! You shall not die! Indeed, my father will do nothing either great or small without first telling me. And why should my father hide this thing from me? It is not so!"H559H2486H4191H1H6213H6213H1697H1419H6996H1540H241H1H5641H1697 3Then David took an oath again, and said, "Your father certainly knows that I have found favor in your eyes, and he has said, 'Do not let Jonathan know this, lest he be grieved.' But truly, as the LORD lives and as your soul lives, there is but a step between me and death."H1732H7650H559H1H3045H3045H4672H2580H5869H559H3083H3045H6087H199H3068H2416H5315H2416H6587H4194 4So Jonathan said to David, "Whatever you yourself desire, I will do it for you."H559H3083H1732H5315H559H6213 5And David said to Jonathan, "Indeed tomorrow is the New Moon, and I should not fail to sit with the king to eat. But let me go, that I may hide in the field until the third day at evening.H1732H559H3083H4279H2320H3427H3427H4428H398H7971H5641H7704H7992H6153 6"If your father misses me at all, then say, 'David earnestly asked permission of me that he might run over to Bethlehem, his city, for there is a yearly sacrifice there for all the family.'H1H6485H6485H559H1732H7592H7592H7323H1035H5892H3117H2077H4940 7"If he says thus: 'It is well,' your servant will be safe. But if he is very angry, then be sure that evil is determined by him.H559H2896H5650H7965H2734H2734H3045H7451H3615 8"Therefore you shall deal kindly with your servant, for you have brought your servant into a covenant of the LORD with you. Nevertheless, if there is iniquity in me, kill me yourself, for why should you bring me to your father?"H6213H2617H5650H935H5650H1285H3068H3426H5771H4191H935H1 9But Jonathan said, "Far be it from you! For if I knew certainly that evil was determined by my father to come upon you, then would I not tell you?"H3083H559H2486H3045H3045H7451H3615H1H935H5046 10Then David said to Jonathan, "Who will tell me, or what if your father answers you roughly?"H559H1732H3083H5046H1H6030H7186 11And Jonathan said to David, "Come, and let us go out into the field." So both of them went out into the field.H3083H559H1732H3212H3318H7704H3318H8147H7704 12Then Jonathan said to David: "The LORD God of Israel is witness! When I have sounded out my father sometime tomorrow, or the third day, and indeed there is good toward David, and I do not send to you and tell you,H3083H559H1732H3068H430H3478H2713H1H4279H6256H7992H2895H1732H7971H1540H241 13"may the LORD do so and much more to Jonathan. But if it pleases my father to do you evil, then I will report it to you and send you away, that you may go in safety. And the LORD be with you as He has been with my father.H3068H6213H3541H3254H3083H3190H1H7451H1540H241H7971H1980H7965H3068H1 14"And you shall not only show me the kindness of the LORD while I still live, that I may not die;H518H2416H6213H2617H3068H4191 15"but you shall not cut off your kindness from my house forever, no, not when the LORD has cut off every one of the enemies of David from the face of the earth."H3772H2617H1004H5704H5769H3068H3772H341H1732H376H6440H127 16So Jonathan made a covenant with the house of David, saying, "Let the LORD require it at the hand of David's enemies."H3083H3772H1004H1732H3068H1245H3027H1732H341 17Now Jonathan again caused David to vow, because he loved him; for he loved him as he loved his own soul.H3083H1732H7650H3254H160H157H160H5315 18Then Jonathan said to David, "Tomorrow is the New Moon; and you will be missed, because your seat will be empty.H3083H559H1732H4279H2320H6485H4186H6485 19"And when you have stayed three days, go down quickly and come to the place where you hid on the day of the deed; and remain by the stone Ezel.H8027H3381H3966H935H4725H5641H3117H4639H3427H681H68H237 20"Then I will shoot three arrows to the side, as though I shot at a target;H3384H7969H2671H6654H7971H4307 21"and there I will send a lad, saying, 'Go, find the arrows.' If I expressly say to him, 'Look, the arrows are on this side of you; get them and come'—then, as the LORD lives, there is safety for you and no harm.H7971H5288H3212H4672H2671H559H559H5288H2671H3947H935H7965H1697H3068H2416 22"But if I say thus to the young man, 'Look, the arrows are beyond you'—go your way, for the LORD has sent you away.H559H5958H2671H1973H3212H3068H7971 23"And as for the matter which you and I have spoken of, indeed the LORD be between you and me forever."H1697H1696H3068H5704H5769 24Then David hid in the field. And when the New Moon had come, the king sat down to eat the feast.H1732H5641H7704H2320H4428H3427H398H3899 25Now the king sat on his seat, as at other times, on a seat by the wall. And Jonathan arose, and Abner sat by Saul's side, but David's place was empty.H4428H3427H4186H6471H4186H7023H3083H6965H74H3427H7586H6654H1732H4725H6485 26Nevertheless Saul did not say anything that day, for he thought, "Something has happened to him; he is unclean, surely he is unclean."H7586H1696H3972H3117H559H4745H1115H2889H2889 27And it happened the next day, the second day of the month, that David's place was empty. And Saul said to Jonathan his son, "Why has the son of Jesse not come to eat, either yesterday or today?"H4283H8145H2320H1732H4725H6485H7586H559H3083H1121H935H1121H3448H3899H8543H3117 28So Jonathan answered Saul, "David earnestly asked permission of me to go to Bethlehem.H3083H6030H7586H1732H7592H7592H5978H1035 29"And he said, 'Please let me go, for our family has a sacrifice in the city, and my brother has commanded me to be there. And now, if I have found favor in your eyes, please let me get away and see my brothers.' Therefore he has not come to the king's table."H559H7971H4940H2077H5892H251H6680H4672H2580H5869H4422H7200H251H935H4428H7979 30Then Saul's anger was aroused against Jonathan, and he said to him, "You son of a perverse, rebellious woman! Do I not know that you have chosen the son of Jesse to your own shame and to the shame of your mother's nakedness?H7586H639H2734H3083H559H1121H5753H4780H3045H977H1121H3448H1322H1322H517H6172 31"For as long as the son of Jesse lives on the earth, you shall not be established, nor your kingdom. Now therefore, send and bring him to me, for he shall surely die."H3117H1121H3448H2425H127H3559H4438H7971H3947H1121H4194 32And Jonathan answered Saul his father, and said to him, "Why should he be killed? What has he done?"H3083H6030H7586H1H559H4191H6213 33Then Saul cast a spear at him to kill him, by which Jonathan knew that it was determined by his father to kill David.H7586H2904H2595H5221H3083H3045H3617H1H4191H1732 34So Jonathan arose from the table in fierce anger, and ate no food the second day of the month, for he was grieved for David, because his father had treated him shamefully.H3083H6965H7979H2750H639H398H3899H8145H3117H2320H6087H1732H1H3637 35And so it was, in the morning, that Jonathan went out into the field at the time appointed with David, and a little lad was with him.H1242H3083H3318H7704H4150H1732H6996H5288 36Then he said to his lad, "Now run, find the arrows which I shoot." As the lad ran, he shot an arrow beyond him.H559H5288H7323H4672H2671H3384H5288H7323H3384H2678H5674 37When the lad had come to the place where the arrow was which Jonathan had shot, Jonathan cried out after the lad and said, "Is not the arrow beyond you?"H5288H935H4725H2678H3083H3384H3083H7121H310H5288H559H2678H1973 38And Jonathan cried out after the lad, "Make haste, hurry, do not delay!" So Jonathan's lad gathered up the arrows and came back to his master.H3083H7121H310H5288H4120H2363H5975H3083H5288H3950H2671H2678H935H113 39But the lad did not know anything. Only Jonathan and David knew of the matter.H5288H3045H3972H3083H1732H3045H1697 40Then Jonathan gave his weapons to his lad, and said to him, "Go, carry them to the city."H3083H5414H3627H5288H559H3212H935H5892 41As soon as the lad had gone, David arose from a place toward the south, fell on his face to the ground, and bowed down three times. And they kissed one another; and they wept together, but David more so.H5288H935H1732H6965H681H5045H5307H639H776H7812H7969H6471H5401H376H7453H1058H376H7453H1732H1431 42Then Jonathan said to David, "Go in peace, since we have both sworn in the name of the LORD, saying, 'May the LORD be between you and me, and between your descendants and my descendants, forever.'" So he arose and departed, and Jonathan went into the city.H3083H559H1732H3212H7965H7650H8147H8034H3068H559H3068H2233H2233H5704H5769H6965H3212H3083H935H5892
