1Samuel 21
Holman Christian Standard Bible Help
21David went to Ahimelech the priest at Nob. Ahimelech was afraid to meet David, so he said to him, "Why are you alone and no one is with you?"H935H1732H5011H288H3548H288H2729H7125H1732H559H376
2David answered Ahimelech the priest, "The king gave me a mission, but he told me, 'Don't let anyone know anything about the mission I'm sending you on or what I have ordered you [to do].' I have stationed [my] young men at a certain place.H1732H559H288H3548H4428H6680H1697H559H376H3045H3972H1697H7971H6680H3045H5288H6423H492H4725
3Now what do you have on hand? Give me five loaves of bread or whatever can be found."H3426H3027H5414H2568H3899H3027H4672
4The priest told him, "There is no ordinary bread on hand. However, there is consecrated bread, but the young men may eat it only if they have kept themselves from women."H3548H6030H1732H559H2455H3899H3027H3426H6944H3899H5288H8104H389H802
5David answered him, "I swear that women are being kept from us, as always when I go out [to battle]. The young men's bodies are consecrated even on an ordinary mission, so of course their bodies are consecrated today."H1732H6030H3548H559H518H802H6113H8032H8543H3318H3627H5288H6944H1870H2455H6942H3117H3627
6So the priest gave him the consecrated [bread], for there was no bread there except the bread of the Presence that had been removed from before the LORD. When the bread was removed, it had been replaced with warm bread.H3548H5414H6944H3899H3899H6440H5493H6440H3068H7760H2527H3899H3117H3947
7One of Saul's servants, detained before the LORD, was there that day. His name was Doeg the Edomite, chief of Saul's shepherds.H376H5650H7586H3117H6113H6440H3068H8034H1673H130H47H7462H7586
8David said to Ahimelech, "Do you have a spear or sword on hand? I didn't even bring my sword or my weapons since the king's mission was urgent."H1732H559H288H3426H371H3027H2595H2719H3947H2719H3627H3027H4428H1697H1961H5169
9The priest replied, "The sword of Goliath the Philistine, whom you killed in the valley of Elah, is here, wrapped in a cloth behind the ephod. If you want to take it for yourself, then take it, for there isn't another one here." "There's none like it!" David said. "Give it to me."H3548H559H2719H1555H6430H5221H6010H425H3874H8071H310H646H3947H3947H312H2108H2088H1732H559H5414
10David fled that day from Saul's presence and went to King Achish of Gath.H1732H6965H1272H3117H6440H7586H935H397H4428H1661
11But Achish's servants said to him, "Isn't this David, the king of the land? Don't they sing about him during their dances: Saul has killed his thousands, but David his tens of thousands?"H5650H397H559H1732H4428H776H6030H2088H4246H559H7586H5221H505H1732H7233
12David took this to heart and became very afraid of King Achish of Gath,H1732H7760H1697H3824H3966H3372H6440H397H4428H1661
13so he pretended to be insane in their presence. He acted like a madman around them, scribbling on the doors of the gate and letting saliva run down his beard.H8138H2940H5869H1984H3027H8427H1817H8179H7388H3381H2206
14"Look! You can see the man is crazy," Achish said to his servants. "Why did you bring him to me?H559H397H5650H7200H376H7696H935
15Do I have such a shortage of crazy people that you brought this one to act crazy around me? Is this one going to come into my house?"H2638H7696H935H7696H935H1004
