David and the Holy Bread

21Now David came to Nob, to Ahimelech the priest. And Ahimelech was afraid when he met David, and said to him, "Why are you alone, and no one is with you?"H935H1732H5011H288H3548H288H2729H7125H1732H559H376 2So David said to Ahimelech the priest, "The king has ordered me on some business, and said to me, 'Do not let anyone know anything about the business on which I send you, or what I have commanded you.' And I have directed my young men to such and such a place.H1732H559H288H3548H4428H6680H1697H559H376H3045H3972H1697H7971H6680H3045H5288H6423H492H4725 3"Now therefore, what have you on hand? Give me five loaves of bread in my hand, or whatever can be found."H3426H3027H5414H2568H3899H3027H4672 4And the priest answered David and said, "There is no common bread on hand; but there is holy bread, if the young men have at least kept themselves from women."H3548H6030H1732H559H2455H3899H3027H3426H6944H3899H5288H8104H389H802 5Then David answered the priest, and said to him, "Truly, women have been kept from us about three days since I came out. And the vessels of the young men are holy, and the bread is in effect common, even though it was sanctified in the vessel this day."H1732H6030H3548H559H518H802H6113H8032H8543H3318H3627H5288H6944H1870H2455H6942H3117H3627 6So the priest gave him holy bread; for there was no bread there but the showbread which had been taken from before the LORD, in order to put hot bread in its place on the day when it was taken away.H3548H5414H6944H3899H3899H6440H5493H6440H3068H7760H2527H3899H3117H3947 7Now a certain man of the servants of Saul was there that day, detained before the LORD. And his name was Doeg, an Edomite, the chief of the herdsmen who belonged to Saul.H376H5650H7586H3117H6113H6440H3068H8034H1673H130H47H7462H7586 8And David said to Ahimelech, "Is there not here on hand a spear or a sword? For I have brought neither my sword nor my weapons with me, because the king's business required haste."H1732H559H288H3426H371H3027H2595H2719H3947H2719H3627H3027H4428H1697H1961H5169 9So the priest said, "The sword of Goliath the Philistine, whom you killed in the Valley of Elah, there it is, wrapped in a cloth behind the ephod. If you will take that, take it. For there is no other except that one here." And David said, "There is none like it; give it to me."H3548H559H2719H1555H6430H5221H6010H425H3874H8071H310H646H3947H3947H312H2108H2088H1732H559H5414

David Flees to Gath

10Then David arose and fled that day from before Saul, and went to Achish the king of Gath.H1732H6965H1272H3117H6440H7586H935H397H4428H1661 11And the servants of Achish said to him, "Is this not David the king of the land? Did they not sing of him to one another in dances, saying: 'Saul has slain his thousands, And David his ten thousands'?"H5650H397H559H1732H4428H776H6030H2088H4246H559H7586H5221H505H1732H7233 12Now David took these words to heart, and was very much afraid of Achish the king of Gath.H1732H7760H1697H3824H3966H3372H6440H397H4428H1661 13So he changed his behavior before them, feigned madness in their hands, scratched on the doors of the gate, and let his saliva fall down on his beard.H8138H2940H5869H1984H3027H8427H1817H8179H7388H3381H2206 14Then Achish said to his servants, "Look, you see the man is insane. Why have you brought him to me?H559H397H5650H7200H376H7696H935 15"Have I need of madmen, that you have brought this fellow to play the madman in my presence? Shall this fellow come into my house?"H2638H7696H935H7696H935H1004
