1Samuel 22
Holman Christian Standard Bible Help
22So David left Gath and took refuge in the cave of Adullam. When David's brothers and his father's whole family heard, they went down and joined him there.H1732H3212H4422H4631H5725H251H1H1004H8085H3381
2In addition, every man who was desperate, in debt, or discontented rallied around him, and he became their leader. About 400 men were with him.H376H4689H376H5378H376H4751H5315H6908H8269H702H3967H376
3From there David went to Mizpeh of Moab where he said to the king of Moab, "Please let my father and mother stay with you until I know what God will do for me."H1732H3212H4708H4124H559H4428H4124H1H517H3318H3045H430H6213
4So he left them in the care of the king of Moab, and they stayed with him the whole time David was in the stronghold.H5148H6440H4428H4124H3427H3117H1732H4686
5Then the prophet Gad said to David, "Don't stay in the stronghold. Leave and return to the land of Judah." So David left and went to the forest of Hereth.H5030H1410H559H1732H3427H4686H3212H935H776H3063H1732H3212H935H3293H2802
6Saul heard that David and his men had been discovered. At that time Saul was in Gibeah, sitting under the tamarisk tree at the high place. His spear was in his hand, and all his servants were standing around him.H7586H8085H1732H3045H582H7586H3427H1390H815H7414H2595H3027H5650H5324
7Saul said to his servants, "Listen, men of Benjamin: Is Jesse's son going to give all of you fields and vineyards? [Do you think] he'll make all of you commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds?H7586H559H5650H5324H8085H1145H1121H3448H5414H7704H3754H7760H8269H505H8269H3967
8That's why all of you have conspired against me! Nobody tells me when my own son makes a covenant with Jesse's son. None of you cares about me or tells me that my son has stirred up my own servant to wait in ambush for me, as [is the case] today."H7194H1540H241H1121H3772H1121H3448H2470H1540H241H1121H6965H5650H693H3117
9Then Doeg the Edomite, who was in charge of Saul's servants, answered: "I saw Jesse's son come to Ahimelech son of Ahitub at Nob.H6030H1673H130H5324H5650H7586H559H7200H1121H3448H935H5011H288H1121H285
10Ahimelech inquired of the LORD for him and gave him provisions. He also gave him the sword of Goliath the Philistine."H7592H3068H5414H6720H5414H2719H1555H6430
11The king sent [messengers] to summon Ahimelech the priest, son of Ahitub, and his father's whole family, who were priests in Nob. All of them came to the king.H4428H7971H7121H288H3548H1121H285H1H1004H3548H5011H935H4428
12Then Saul said, "Listen, son of Ahitub!" "I'm at your service, my lord," he said.H7586H559H8085H1121H285H559H113
13Saul asked him, "Why did you and Jesse's son conspire against me? You gave him bread and a sword and inquired of God for him, so he could rise up against me and wait in ambush, as [is the case] today."H7586H559H7194H1121H3448H5414H3899H2719H7592H430H6965H693H3117
14Ahimelech replied to the king: "Who among all your servants is as faithful as David? He is the king's son-in-law, captain of your bodyguard, and honored in your house.H288H6030H4428H559H539H5650H1732H4428H2860H5493H4928H3513H1004
15Was today the first time I inquired of God for him? Of course not! Please don't let the king make an accusation against your servant or any of my father's household, for your servant didn't have any idea about all this."H3117H2490H7592H430H2486H4428H7760H1697H5650H1004H1H5650H3045H1697H6996H1419
16But the king said, "You will die, Ahimelech— you and your father's whole family!"H4428H559H4191H4191H288H1H1004
17Then the king ordered the guards standing by him, "Turn and kill the priests of the LORD because they sided with David. For they knew he was fleeing, but they didn't tell me." But the king's servants would not lift a hand to execute the priests of the LORD.H4428H559H7323H5324H5437H4191H3548H3068H3027H1732H3045H1272H1540H241H5650H4428H14H7971H3027H6293H3548H3068
18So the king said to Doeg, "Go and execute the priests!" So Doeg the Edomite went and executed the priests himself. On that day, he killed 85 men who wore linen ephods.H4428H559H1673H5437H6293H3548H1673H130H5437H6293H3548H4191H3117H8084H2568H376H5375H906H646
19He also struck down Nob, the city of the priests, with the sword— both men and women, children and infants, oxen, donkeys, and sheep.H5011H5892H3548H5221H6310H2719H376H802H5768H3243H7794H2543H7716H6310H2719
20However, one of the sons of Ahimelech son of Ahitub escaped. His name was Abiathar, and he fled to David.H259H1121H288H1121H285H8034H54H4422H1272H310H1732
21Abiathar told David that Saul had killed the priests of the LORD.H54H5046H1732H7586H2026H3068H3548
22Then David said to Abiathar, "I knew that Doeg the Edomite was there that day and that he was sure to report to Saul. I myself am responsible for the lives of everyone in your father's family.H1732H559H54H3045H3117H1673H130H5046H5046H7586H5437H5315H1H1004
23Stay with me. Don't be afraid, for the one who wants to take my life wants to take your life. You will be safe with me."H3427H3372H1245H5315H1245H5315H4931
