1Samuel 22
New King James Version

David’s Four Hundred Men

22David therefore departed from there and escaped to the cave of Adullam. And when his brothers and all his father's house heard it, they went down there to him.H1732H3212H4422H4631H5725H251H1H1004H8085H3381 2And everyone who was in distress, everyone who was in debt, and everyone who was discontented gathered to him. So he became captain over them. And there were about four hundred men with him.H376H4689H376H5378H376H4751H5315H6908H8269H702H3967H376 3Then David went from there to Mizpah of Moab; and he said to the king of Moab, "Please let my father and mother come here with you, till I know what God will do for me."H1732H3212H4708H4124H559H4428H4124H1H517H3318H3045H430H6213 4So he brought them before the king of Moab, and they dwelt with him all the time that David was in the stronghold.H5148H6440H4428H4124H3427H3117H1732H4686 5Now the prophet Gad said to David, "Do not stay in the stronghold; depart, and go to the land of Judah." So David departed and went into the forest of Hereth.H5030H1410H559H1732H3427H4686H3212H935H776H3063H1732H3212H935H3293H2802

Saul Murders the Priests

6When Saul heard that David and the men who were with him had been discovered—now Saul was staying in Gibeah under a tamarisk tree in Ramah, with his spear in his hand, and all his servants standing about him—H7586H8085H1732H3045H582H7586H3427H1390H815H7414H2595H3027H5650H5324 7then Saul said to his servants who stood about him, "Hear now, you Benjamites! Will the son of Jesse give every one of you fields and vineyards, and make you all captains of thousands and captains of hundreds?H7586H559H5650H5324H8085H1145H1121H3448H5414H7704H3754H7760H8269H505H8269H3967 8"All of you have conspired against me, and there is no one who reveals to me that my son has made a covenant with the son of Jesse; and there is not one of you who is sorry for me or reveals to me that my son has stirred up my servant against me, to lie in wait, as it is this day."H7194H1540H241H1121H3772H1121H3448H2470H1540H241H1121H6965H5650H693H3117 9Then answered Doeg the Edomite, who was set over the servants of Saul, and said, "I saw the son of Jesse going to Nob, to Ahimelech the son of Ahitub.H6030H1673H130H5324H5650H7586H559H7200H1121H3448H935H5011H288H1121H285 10"And he inquired of the LORD for him, gave him provisions, and gave him the sword of Goliath the Philistine."H7592H3068H5414H6720H5414H2719H1555H6430 11So the king sent to call Ahimelech the priest, the son of Ahitub, and all his father's house, the priests who were in Nob. And they all came to the king.H4428H7971H7121H288H3548H1121H285H1H1004H3548H5011H935H4428 12And Saul said, "Hear now, son of Ahitub!" And he answered, "Here I am, my lord."H7586H559H8085H1121H285H559H113 13Then Saul said to him, "Why have you conspired against me, you and the son of Jesse, in that you have given him bread and a sword, and have inquired of God for him, that he should rise against me, to lie in wait, as it is this day?"H7586H559H7194H1121H3448H5414H3899H2719H7592H430H6965H693H3117 14So Ahimelech answered the king and said, "And who among all your servants is as faithful as David, who is the king's son-in-law, who goes at your bidding, and is honorable in your house?H288H6030H4428H559H539H5650H1732H4428H2860H5493H4928H3513H1004 15"Did I then begin to inquire of God for him? Far be it from me! Let not the king impute anything to his servant, or to any in the house of my father. For your servant knew nothing of all this, little or much."H3117H2490H7592H430H2486H4428H7760H1697H5650H1004H1H5650H3045H1697H6996H1419 16And the king said, "You shall surely die, Ahimelech, you and all your father's house!"H4428H559H4191H4191H288H1H1004 17Then the king said to the guards who stood about him, "Turn and kill the priests of the LORD, because their hand also is with David, and because they knew when he fled and did not tell it to me." But the servants of the king would not lift their hands to strike the priests of the LORD.H4428H559H7323H5324H5437H4191H3548H3068H3027H1732H3045H1272H1540H241H5650H4428H14H7971H3027H6293H3548H3068 18And the king said to Doeg, "You turn and kill the priests!" So Doeg the Edomite turned and struck the priests, and killed on that day eighty-five men who wore a linen ephod.H4428H559H1673H5437H6293H3548H1673H130H5437H6293H3548H4191H3117H8084H2568H376H5375H906H646 19Also Nob, the city of the priests, he struck with the edge of the sword, both men and women, children and nursing infants, oxen and donkeys and sheep—with the edge of the sword.H5011H5892H3548H5221H6310H2719H376H802H5768H3243H7794H2543H7716H6310H2719 20Now one of the sons of Ahimelech the son of Ahitub, named Abiathar, escaped and fled after David.H259H1121H288H1121H285H8034H54H4422H1272H310H1732 21And Abiathar told David that Saul had killed the LORD'S priests.H54H5046H1732H7586H2026H3068H3548 22So David said to Abiathar, "I knew that day, when Doeg the Edomite was there, that he would surely tell Saul. I have caused the death of all the persons of your father's house.H1732H559H54H3045H3117H1673H130H5046H5046H7586H5437H5315H1H1004 23"Stay with me; do not fear. For he who seeks my life seeks your life, but with me you shall be safe."H3427H3372H1245H5315H1245H5315H4931
