David Avenges the Destruction of Ziklag

30Now when David and his men came to Ziklag on the third day, the Amalekites had made a raid on the Negeb and on Ziklag. They had attacked Ziklag, burned it down,H1732H582H935H6860H7992H3117H6003H6584H5045H6860H5221H6860H8313H784 2and taken captive the women and all who were in it, both small and great; they killed none of them, but carried them off, and went their way.H802H7617H4191H376H1419H6996H5090H3212H1870 3When David and his men came to the city, they found it burned down, and their wives and sons and daughters taken captive.H1732H582H935H5892H8313H784H802H1121H1323H7617 4Then David and the people who were with him raised their voices and wept, until they had no more strength to weep.H1732H5971H5375H6963H1058H3581H1058 5David's two wives also had been taken captive, Ahinoam of Jezreel, and Abigail the widow of Nabal of Carmel.H1732H8147H802H7617H293H3159H26H802H5037H3761 6David was in great danger; for the people spoke of stoning him, because all the people were bitter in spirit for their sons and daughters. But David strengthened himself in the LORD his God.H1732H3966H3334H5971H559H5619H5315H5971H4843H376H1121H1323H1732H2388H3068H430 7David said to the priest Abiathar son of Ahimelech, "Bring me the ephod." So Abiathar brought the ephod to David.H1732H559H54H3548H288H1121H5066H646H54H5066H646H1732 8David inquired of the LORD, "Shall I pursue this band? Shall I overtake them?" He answered him, "Pursue; for you shall surely overtake and shall surely rescue."H1732H7592H3068H559H7291H310H1416H5381H559H7291H5381H5381H5337H5337 9So David set out, he and the six hundred men who were with him. They came to the Wadi Besor, where those stayed who were left behind.H1732H3212H8337H3967H376H935H5158H1308H3498H5975 10But David went on with the pursuit, he and four hundred men; two hundred stayed behind, too exhausted to cross the Wadi Besor.H1732H7291H702H3967H376H3967H5975H6296H5674H5158H1308 11In the open country they found an Egyptian, and brought him to David. They gave him bread and he ate, they gave him water to drink;H4672H376H4713H7704H3947H1732H5414H3899H398H8248H4325 12they also gave him a piece of fig cake and two clusters of raisins. When he had eaten, his spirit revived; for he had not eaten bread or drunk water for three days and three nights.H5414H6400H1690H8147H6778H398H7307H7725H398H3899H8354H4325H7969H3117H7969H3915 13Then David said to him, "To whom do you belong? Where are you from?" He said, "I am a young man of Egypt, servant to an Amalekite. My master left me behind because I fell sick three days ago.H1732H559H559H5288H4713H5650H376H6003H113H5800H7969H3117H2470 14We had made a raid on the Negeb of the Cherethites and on that which belongs to Judah and on the Negeb of Caleb; and we burned Ziklag down."H6584H5045H3774H3063H5045H3612H8313H6860H784 15David said to him, "Will you take me down to this raiding party?" He said, "Swear to me by God that you will not kill me, or hand me over to my master, and I will take you down to them."H1732H559H3381H1416H559H7650H430H4191H518H5462H3027H113H3381H1416 16When he had taken him down, they were spread out all over the ground, eating and drinking and dancing, because of the great amount of spoil they had taken from the land of the Philistines and from the land of Judah.H3381H5203H6440H776H398H8354H2287H1419H7998H3947H776H6430H776H3063 17David attacked them from twilight until the evening of the next day. Not one of them escaped, except four hundred young men, who mounted camels and fled.H1732H5221H5399H6153H4283H4422H376H702H3967H5288H376H7392H1581H5127 18David recovered all that the Amalekites had taken; and David rescued his two wives.H1732H5337H6002H3947H1732H5337H8147H802 19Nothing was missing, whether small or great, sons or daughters, spoil or anything that had been taken; David brought back everything.H5737H4480H6996H1419H1121H1323H7998H3947H1732H7725 20David also captured all the flocks and herds, which were driven ahead of the other cattle; people said, "This is David's spoil."H1732H3947H6629H1241H5090H6440H1931H4735H559H1732H7998 21Then David came to the two hundred men who had been too exhausted to follow David, and who had been left at the brook Besor. They went out to meet David and to meet the people who were with him. When David drew near to the people he saluted them.H1732H935H3967H582H6296H3212H310H1732H3427H5158H1308H3318H7125H1732H7125H5971H1732H5066H5971H7592H7965 22Then all the corrupt and worthless fellows among the men who had gone with David said, "Because they did not go with us, we will not give them any of the spoil that we have recovered, except that each man may take his wife and children, and leave."H6030H7451H376H1100H582H1980H1732H559H1980H5414H7998H5337H376H802H1121H5090H3212 23But David said, "You shall not do so, my brothers, with what the LORD has given us; he has preserved us and handed over to us the raiding party that attacked us.H559H1732H6213H251H3068H5414H8104H5414H1416H935H3027 24Who would listen to you in this matter? For the share of the one who goes down into the battle shall be the same as the share of the one who stays by the baggage; they shall share alike."H8085H1697H2506H3381H3381H4421H2506H3427H3627H2505H3162 25From that day forward he made it a statute and an ordinance for Israel; it continues to the present day.H3117H4605H7760H2706H4941H3478H3117 26When David came to Ziklag, he sent part of the spoil to his friends, the elders of Judah, saying, "Here is a present for you from the spoil of the enemies of the LORD";H1732H935H6860H7971H7998H2205H3063H7453H559H1293H7998H341H3068 27it was for those in Bethel, in Ramoth of the Negeb, in Jattir,H834H1008H5045H7418H3492 28in Aroer, in Siphmoth, in Eshtemoa,H6177H8224H851 29in Racal, in the towns of the Jerahmeelites, in the towns of the Kenites,H7403H5892H3397H5892H7017 30in Hormah, in Bor-ashan, in Athach,H2767H3565H6269 31in Hebron, all the places where David and his men had roamed.H2275H4725H1732H582H1980
