David’s Victory over the Amalekites

30Then it happened when David and his men came to Ziklag on the third day, that the Amalekites had made a raid on the Negev and on Ziklag, and had overthrown Ziklag and burned it with fire;H1732H582H935H6860H7992H3117H6003H6584H5045H6860H5221H6860H8313H784 2and they took captive the women [and all] who were in it, both small and great, without killing anyone, and carried [them] off and went their way.H802H7617H4191H376H1419H6996H5090H3212H1870 3And when David and his men came to the city, behold, it was burned with fire, and their wives and their sons and their daughters had been taken captive.H1732H582H935H5892H8313H784H802H1121H1323H7617 4Then David and the people who were with him lifted their voices and wept until there was no strength in them to weep.H1732H5971H5375H6963H1058H3581H1058 5Now David's two wives had been taken captive, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess and Abigail the widow of Nabal the Carmelite.H1732H8147H802H7617H293H3159H26H802H5037H3761 6Moreover David was greatly distressed because the people spoke of stoning him, for all the people were embittered, each one because of his sons and his daughters. But David strengthened himself in the LORD his God.H1732H3966H3334H5971H559H5619H5315H5971H4843H376H1121H1323H1732H2388H3068H430 7Then David said to Abiathar the priest, the son of Ahimelech, "Please bring me the ephod." So Abiathar brought the ephod to David.H1732H559H54H3548H288H1121H5066H646H54H5066H646H1732 8And David inquired of the LORD, saying, "Shall I pursue this band? Shall I overtake them?" And He said to him, "Pursue, for you shall surely overtake them, and you shall surely rescue [all]."H1732H7592H3068H559H7291H310H1416H5381H559H7291H5381H5381H5337H5337 9So David went, he and the six hundred men who were with him, and came to the brook Besor, [where] those left behind remained.H1732H3212H8337H3967H376H935H5158H1308H3498H5975 10But David pursued, he and four hundred men, for two hundred who were too exhausted to cross the brook Besor, remained [behind.]H1732H7291H702H3967H376H3967H5975H6296H5674H5158H1308 11Now they found an Egyptian in the field and brought him to David, and gave him bread and he ate, and they provided him water to drink.H4672H376H4713H7704H3947H1732H5414H3899H398H8248H4325 12And they gave him a piece of fig cake and two clusters of raisins, and he ate; then his spirit revived. For he had not eaten bread or drunk water for three days and three nights.H5414H6400H1690H8147H6778H398H7307H7725H398H3899H8354H4325H7969H3117H7969H3915 13And David said to him, "To whom do you belong? And where are you from?" And he said, "I am a young man of Egypt, a servant of an Amalekite; and my master left me behind when I fell sick three days ago.H1732H559H559H5288H4713H5650H376H6003H113H5800H7969H3117H2470 14"We made a raid on the Negev of the Cherethites, and on that which belongs to Judah, and on the Negev of Caleb, and we burned Ziklag with fire."H6584H5045H3774H3063H5045H3612H8313H6860H784 15Then David said to him, "Will you bring me down to this band?" And he said, "Swear to me by God that you will not kill me or deliver me into the hands of my master, and I will bring you down to this band."H1732H559H3381H1416H559H7650H430H4191H518H5462H3027H113H3381H1416 16And when he had brought him down, behold, they were spread over all the land, eating and drinking and dancing because of all the great spoil that they had taken from the land of the Philistines and from the land of Judah.H3381H5203H6440H776H398H8354H2287H1419H7998H3947H776H6430H776H3063 17And David slaughtered them from the twilight until the evening of the next day; and not a man of them escaped, except four hundred young men who rode on camels and fled.H1732H5221H5399H6153H4283H4422H376H702H3967H5288H376H7392H1581H5127 18So David recovered all that the Amalekites had taken, and rescued his two wives.H1732H5337H6002H3947H1732H5337H8147H802 19But nothing of theirs was missing, whether small or great, sons or daughters, spoil or anything that they had taken for themselves; David brought [it] all back.H5737H4480H6996H1419H1121H1323H7998H3947H1732H7725 20So David had captured all the sheep and the cattle [which the people] drove ahead of the [other] livestock, and they said, "This is David's spoil."H1732H3947H6629H1241H5090H6440H1931H4735H559H1732H7998

The Spoils Are Divided

21When David came to the two hundred men who were too exhausted to follow David, who had also been left at the brook Besor, and they went out to meet David and to meet the people who were with him, then David approached the people and greeted them.H1732H935H3967H582H6296H3212H310H1732H3427H5158H1308H3318H7125H1732H7125H5971H1732H5066H5971H7592H7965 22Then all the wicked and worthless men among those who went with David answered and said, "Because they did not go with us, we will not give them any of the spoil that we have recovered, except to every man his wife and his children, that they may lead [them] away and depart."H6030H7451H376H1100H582H1980H1732H559H1980H5414H7998H5337H376H802H1121H5090H3212 23Then David said, "You must not do so, my brothers, with what the LORD has given us, who has kept us and delivered into our hand the band that came against us.H559H1732H6213H251H3068H5414H8104H5414H1416H935H3027 24"And who will listen to you in this matter? For as his share is who goes down to the battle, so shall his share be who stays by the baggage; they shall share alike."H8085H1697H2506H3381H3381H4421H2506H3427H3627H2505H3162 25And so it has been from that day forward, that he made it a statute and an ordinance for Israel to this day.H3117H4605H7760H2706H4941H3478H3117 26Now when David came to Ziklag, he sent [some] of the spoil to the elders of Judah, to his friends, saying, "Behold, a gift for you from the spoil of the enemies of the LORD:H1732H935H6860H7971H7998H2205H3063H7453H559H1293H7998H341H3068 27to those who were in Bethel, and to those who were in Ramoth of the Negev, and to those who were in Jattir,H834H1008H5045H7418H3492 28and to those who were in Aroer, and to those who were in Siphmoth, and to those who were in Eshtemoa,H6177H8224H851 29and to those who were in Racal, and to those who were in the cities of the Jerahmeelites, and to those who were in the cities of the Kenites,H7403H5892H3397H5892H7017 30and to those who were in Hormah, and to those who were in Bor-ashan, and to those who were in Athach,H2767H3565H6269 31and to those who were in Hebron, and to all the places where David himself and his men were accustomed to go.
