Philistines Take the Ark in Victory

4Thus the word of Samuel came to all Israel. Now Israel went out to meet the Philistines in battle and camped beside Ebenezer while the Philistines camped in Aphek.H1697H8050H3478H3478H3318H7125H6430H4421H2583H72H6430H2583H663 2And the Philistines drew up in battle array to meet Israel. When the battle spread, Israel was defeated before the Philistines who killed about four thousand men on the battlefield.H6430H6186H7125H3478H5203H4421H3478H5062H6440H6430H5221H4634H7704H702H505H376 3When the people came into the camp, the elders of Israel said, "Why has the LORD defeated us today before the Philistines? Let us take to ourselves from Shiloh the ark of the covenant of the LORD, that it may come among us and deliver us from the power of our enemies."H5971H935H4264H2205H3478H559H3068H5062H3117H6440H6430H3947H727H1285H3068H7887H935H7130H3467H3709H341 4So the people sent to Shiloh, and from there they carried the ark of the covenant of the LORD of hosts who sits [above] the cherubim; and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, [were] there with the ark of the covenant of God.H5971H7971H7887H5375H727H1285H3068H6635H3427H3742H8147H1121H5941H2652H6372H727H1285H430 5And it happened as the ark of the covenant of the LORD came into the camp, that all Israel shouted with a great shout, so that the earth resounded.H727H1285H3068H935H4264H3478H7321H1419H8643H776H1949 6And when the Philistines heard the noise of the shout, they said, "What [does] the noise of this great shout in the camp of the Hebrews [mean?]" Then they understood that the ark of the LORD had come into the camp.H6430H8085H6963H8643H559H6963H1419H8643H4264H5680H3045H727H3068H935H4264 7And the Philistines were afraid, for they said, "God has come into the camp." And they said, "Woe to us! For nothing like this has happened before.H6430H3372H559H430H935H4264H559H188H865H8032 8"Woe to us! Who shall deliver us from the hand of these mighty gods? These are the gods who smote the Egyptians with all [kinds of] plagues in the wilderness.H188H5337H3027H117H430H430H5221H4714H4347H4057 9"Take courage and be men, O Philistines, lest you become slaves to the Hebrews, as they have been slaves to you; therefore, be men and fight."H2388H1961H582H6430H5647H5680H5647H1961H582H3898 10So the Philistines fought and Israel was defeated, and every man fled to his tent, and the slaughter was very great; for there fell of Israel thirty thousand foot soldiers.H6430H3898H3478H5062H5127H376H168H3966H1419H4347H5307H3478H7970H505H7273 11And the ark of God was taken; and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, died.H727H430H3947H8147H1121H5941H2652H6372H4191 12Now a man of Benjamin ran from the battle line and came to Shiloh the same day with his clothes torn and dust on his head.H7323H376H1144H4634H935H7887H3117H4055H7167H127H7218 13When he came, behold, Eli was sitting on [his] seat by the road eagerly watching, because his heart was trembling for the ark of God. So the man came to tell [it] in the city, and all the city cried out.H935H5941H3427H3678H1870H3027H3197H6822H3820H2730H727H430H376H935H5892H5046H5892H2199 14When Eli heard the noise of the outcry, he said, "What [does] the noise of this commotion [mean?]" Then the man came hurriedly and told Eli.H5941H8085H6963H6818H559H6963H1995H376H935H4116H5046H5941 15Now Eli was ninety-eight years old, and his eyes were set so that he could not see.H5941H8673H8083H8141H1121H5869H6965H3201H7200 16And the man said to Eli, "I am the one who came from the battle line. Indeed, I escaped from the battle line today." And he said, "How did things go, my son?"H376H559H5941H935H4634H5127H3117H4634H559H1697H1121 17Then the one who brought the news answered and said, "Israel has fled before the Philistines and there has also been a great slaughter among the people, and your two sons also, Hophni and Phinehas, are dead, and the ark of God has been taken."H1319H6030H559H3478H5127H6440H6430H1419H4046H5971H8147H1121H2652H6372H4191H727H430H3947 18And it came about when he mentioned the ark of God that Eli fell off the seat backward beside the gate, and his neck was broken and he died, for he was old and heavy. Thus he judged Israel forty years.H2142H727H430H5307H3678H322H1157H3027H8179H4665H7665H4191H2204H376H3513H8199H3478H705H8141 19Now his daughter-in-law, Phinehas' wife, was pregnant and about to give birth; and when she heard the news that the ark of God was taken and that her father-in-law and her husband had died, she kneeled down and gave birth, for her pains came upon her.H3618H6372H802H2030H3205H8085H8052H413H727H430H3947H2524H376H4191H3766H3205H6735H2015 20And about the time of her death the women who stood by her said to her, "Do not be afraid, for you have given birth to a son." But she did not answer or pay attention.H6256H4191H5324H1696H3372H3205H1121H6030H7896H3820 21And she called the boy Ichabod, saying, "The glory has departed from Israel," because the ark of God was taken and because of her father-in-law and her husband.H7121H5288H350H559H3519H1540H3478H413H727H430H3947H2524H376 22And she said, "The glory has departed from Israel, for the ark of God was taken."H559H3519H1540H3478H727H430H3947
