Sennacherib Boasts Against the Lord

32After these deeds of faithfulness, Sennacherib king of Assyria came and entered Judah; he encamped against the fortified cities, thinking to win them over to himself.H310H1697H571H5576H4428H804H935H935H3063H2583H1219H5892H559H1234 2And when Hezekiah saw that Sennacherib had come, and that his purpose was to make war against Jerusalem,H3169H7200H5576H935H6440H4421H3389 3he consulted with his leaders and commanders to stop the water from the springs which were outside the city; and they helped him.H3289H8269H1368H5640H4325H5869H2351H5892H5826 4Thus many people gathered together who stopped all the springs and the brook that ran through the land, saying, "Why should the kings of Assyria come and find much water?"H6908H7227H5971H6908H5640H4599H5158H7857H8432H776H559H4428H804H935H4672H7227H4325 5And he strengthened himself, built up all the wall that was broken, raised it up to the towers, and built another wall outside; also he repaired the Millo in the City of David, and made weapons and shields in abundance.H2388H1129H2346H6555H5927H4026H312H2346H2351H2388H4407H5892H1732H6213H7973H4043H7230 6Then he set military captains over the people, gathered them together to him in the open square of the city gate, and gave them encouragement, saying,H5414H8269H4421H5971H6908H7339H8179H5892H1696H3824H559 7"Be strong and courageous; do not be afraid nor dismayed before the king of Assyria, nor before all the multitude that is with him; for there are more with us than with him.H2388H553H3372H2865H6440H4428H804H1995H7227 8"With him is an arm of flesh; but with us is the LORD our God, to help us and to fight our battles." And the people were strengthened by the words of Hezekiah king of Judah.H2220H1320H3068H430H5826H3898H4421H5971H5564H1697H3169H4428H3063 9After this Sennacherib king of Assyria sent his servants to Jerusalem (but he and all the forces with him laid siege against Lachish), to Hezekiah king of Judah, and to all Judah who were in Jerusalem, saying,H310H5576H4428H804H7971H5650H3389H3923H4475H3169H4428H3063H3063H3389H559 10"Thus says Sennacherib king of Assyria: 'In what do you trust, that you remain under siege in Jerusalem?H559H5576H4428H804H982H3427H4692H3389 11'Does not Hezekiah persuade you to give yourselves over to die by famine and by thirst, saying, "The LORD our God will deliver us from the hand of the king of Assyria"?H3169H5496H5414H4191H7458H6772H559H3068H430H5337H3709H4428H804 12'Has not the same Hezekiah taken away His high places and His altars, and commanded Judah and Jerusalem, saying, "You shall worship before one altar and burn incense on it"?H3169H5493H1116H4196H559H3063H3389H559H7812H6440H259H4196H6999 13'Do you not know what I and my fathers have done to all the peoples of other lands? Were the gods of the nations of those lands in any way able to deliver their lands out of my hand?H3045H1H6213H5971H776H430H1471H776H3201H3201H5337H776H3027 14'Who was there among all the gods of those nations that my fathers utterly destroyed that could deliver his people from my hand, that your God should be able to deliver you from my hand?H430H1471H1H2763H3201H5337H5971H3027H430H3201H5337H3027 15'Now therefore, do not let Hezekiah deceive you or persuade you like this, and do not believe him; for no god of any nation or kingdom was able to deliver his people from my hand or the hand of my fathers. How much less will your God deliver you from my hand?'"H3808H2396H5377H5496H539H433H1471H4467H3201H5337H5971H3027H3027H1H430H5337H3027 16Furthermore, his servants spoke against the LORD God and against His servant Hezekiah.H5650H1696H3068H430H5650H3169 17He also wrote letters to revile the LORD God of Israel, and to speak against Him, saying, "As the gods of the nations of other lands have not delivered their people from my hand, so the God of Hezekiah will not deliver His people from my hand."H3789H5612H2778H3068H430H3478H559H559H430H1471H776H5337H5971H3027H430H3169H5337H5971H3027 18Then they called out with a loud voice in Hebrew to the people of Jerusalem who were on the wall, to frighten them and trouble them, that they might take the city.H7121H1419H6963H3066H5971H3389H2346H3372H926H3920H5892 19And they spoke against the God of Jerusalem, as against the gods of the people of the earth—the work of men's hands.H1696H5921H430H3389H430H5971H776H4639H3027H120

Sennacherib’s Defeat and Death

20Now because of this King Hezekiah and the prophet Isaiah, the son of Amoz, prayed and cried out to heaven.H3169H4428H5030H3470H1121H531H6419H2199H8064 21Then the LORD sent an angel who cut down every mighty man of valor, leader, and captain in the camp of the king of Assyria. So he returned shamefaced to his own land. And when he had gone into the temple of his god, some of his own offspring struck him down with the sword there.H3068H7971H4397H3582H1368H2428H5057H8269H4264H4428H804H7725H1322H6440H776H935H1004H430H3329H4578H5307H2719 22Thus the LORD saved Hezekiah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem from the hand of Sennacherib the king of Assyria, and from the hand of all others, and guided them on every side.H3068H3467H3169H3427H3389H3027H5576H4428H804H3027H5095H5439 23And many brought gifts to the LORD at Jerusalem, and presents to Hezekiah king of Judah, so that he was exalted in the sight of all nations thereafter.H7227H935H4503H3068H3389H4030H3169H4428H3063H5375H5869H1471H310

Hezekiah Humbles Himself

24In those days Hezekiah was sick and near death, and he prayed to the LORD; and He spoke to him and gave him a sign.H3117H3169H2470H4191H6419H3068H559H5414H4159 25But Hezekiah did not repay according to the favor shown him, for his heart was lifted up; therefore wrath was looming over him and over Judah and Jerusalem.H3169H7725H1576H3820H1361H7110H3063H3389 26Then Hezekiah humbled himself for the pride of his heart, he and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so that the wrath of the LORD did not come upon them in the days of Hezekiah.H3169H3665H1363H3820H3427H3389H7110H3068H935H3117H3169

Hezekiah’s Wealth and Honor

27Hezekiah had very great riches and honor. And he made himself treasuries for silver, for gold, for precious stones, for spices, for shields, and for all kinds of desirable items;H3169H3966H7235H6239H3519H6213H214H3701H2091H3368H68H1314H4043H2532H3627 28storehouses for the harvest of grain, wine, and oil; and stalls for all kinds of livestock, and folds for flocks.H4543H8393H1715H8492H3323H723H929H220H5739 29Moreover he provided cities for himself, and possessions of flocks and herds in abundance; for God had given him very much property.H6213H5892H4735H6629H1241H7230H430H5414H7399H3966H7227 30This same Hezekiah also stopped the water outlet of Upper Gihon, and brought the water by tunnel to the west side of the City of David. Hezekiah prospered in all his works.H3169H5640H5945H4161H4325H1521H3474H4295H4628H5892H1732H3169H6743H4639 31However, regarding the ambassadors of the princes of Babylon, whom they sent to him to inquire about the wonder that was done in the land, God withdrew from him, in order to test him, that He might know all that was in his heart.H3651H3887H8269H894H7971H1875H4159H776H430H5800H5254H3045H3824

Death of Hezekiah

32Now the rest of the acts of Hezekiah, and his goodness, indeed they are written in the vision of Isaiah the prophet, the son of Amoz, and in the book of the kings of Judah and Israel.H3499H1697H3169H2617H3789H2377H3470H5030H1121H531H5612H4428H3063H3478 33So Hezekiah rested with his fathers, and they buried him in the upper tombs of the sons of David; and all Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem honored him at his death. Then Manasseh his son reigned in his place.H3169H7901H1H6912H4608H6913H1121H1732H3063H3427H3389H6213H3519H4194H4519H1121H4427
