Sennacherib Threatens Jerusalem

32After all that Hezekiah had so faithfully done, Sennacherib king of Assyria came and invaded Judah. He laid siege to the fortified cities, thinking to conquer them for himself.H310H1697H571H5576H4428H804H935H935H3063H2583H1219H5892H559H1234 2When Hezekiah saw that Sennacherib had come and that he intended to make war on Jerusalem,H3169H7200H5576H935H6440H4421H3389 3he consulted with his officials and military staff about blocking off the water from the springs outside the city, and they helped him.H3289H8269H1368H5640H4325H5869H2351H5892H5826 4A large force of men assembled, and they blocked all the springs and the stream that flowed through the land. "Why should the kings of Assyria come and find plenty of water?" they said.H6908H7227H5971H6908H5640H4599H5158H7857H8432H776H559H4428H804H935H4672H7227H4325 5Then he worked hard repairing all the broken sections of the wall and building towers on it. He built another wall outside that one and reinforced the supporting terraces of the City of David. He also made large numbers of weapons and shields.H2388H1129H2346H6555H5927H4026H312H2346H2351H2388H4407H5892H1732H6213H7973H4043H7230 6He appointed military officers over the people and assembled them before him in the square at the city gate and encouraged them with these words:H5414H8269H4421H5971H6908H7339H8179H5892H1696H3824H559 7"Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or discouraged because of the king of Assyria and the vast army with him, for there is a greater power with us than with him.H2388H553H3372H2865H6440H4428H804H1995H7227 8With him is only the arm of flesh, but with us is the LORD our God to help us and to fight our battles." And the people gained confidence from what Hezekiah the king of Judah said.H2220H1320H3068H430H5826H3898H4421H5971H5564H1697H3169H4428H3063 9Later, when Sennacherib king of Assyria and all his forces were laying siege to Lachish, he sent his officers to Jerusalem with this message for Hezekiah king of Judah and for all the people of Judah who were there:H310H5576H4428H804H7971H5650H3389H3923H4475H3169H4428H3063H3063H3389H559 10"This is what Sennacherib king of Assyria says: On what are you basing your confidence, that you remain in Jerusalem under siege?H559H5576H4428H804H982H3427H4692H3389 11When Hezekiah says, 'The LORD our God will save us from the hand of the king of Assyria,' he is misleading you, to let you die of hunger and thirst.H3169H5496H5414H4191H7458H6772H559H3068H430H5337H3709H4428H804 12Did not Hezekiah himself remove this god's high places and altars, saying to Judah and Jerusalem, 'You must worship before one altar and burn sacrifices on it'?H3169H5493H1116H4196H559H3063H3389H559H7812H6440H259H4196H6999 13"Do you not know what I and my fathers have done to all the peoples of the other lands? Were the gods of those nations ever able to deliver their land from my hand?H3045H1H6213H5971H776H430H1471H776H3201H3201H5337H776H3027 14Who of all the gods of these nations that my fathers destroyed has been able to save his people from me? How then can your god deliver you from my hand?H430H1471H1H2763H3201H5337H5971H3027H430H3201H5337H3027 15Now do not let Hezekiah deceive you and mislead you like this. Do not believe him, for no god of any nation or kingdom has been able to deliver his people from my hand or the hand of my fathers. How much less will your god deliver you from my hand!"H3808H2396H5377H5496H539H433H1471H4467H3201H5337H5971H3027H3027H1H430H5337H3027 16Sennacherib's officers spoke further against the LORD God and against his servant Hezekiah.H5650H1696H3068H430H5650H3169 17The king also wrote letters insulting the LORD, the God of Israel, and saying this against him: "Just as the gods of the peoples of the other lands did not rescue their people from my hand, so the god of Hezekiah will not rescue his people from my hand."H3789H5612H2778H3068H430H3478H559H559H430H1471H776H5337H5971H3027H430H3169H5337H5971H3027 18Then they called out in Hebrew to the people of Jerusalem who were on the wall, to terrify them and make them afraid in order to capture the city.H7121H1419H6963H3066H5971H3389H2346H3372H926H3920H5892 19They spoke about the God of Jerusalem as they did about the gods of the other peoples of the world—the work of men's hands.H1696H5921H430H3389H430H5971H776H4639H3027H120 20King Hezekiah and the prophet Isaiah son of Amoz cried out in prayer to heaven about this.H3169H4428H5030H3470H1121H531H6419H2199H8064 21And the LORD sent an angel, who annihilated all the fighting men and the leaders and officers in the camp of the Assyrian king. So he withdrew to his own land in disgrace. And when he went into the temple of his god, some of his sons cut him down with the sword.H3068H7971H4397H3582H1368H2428H5057H8269H4264H4428H804H7725H1322H6440H776H935H1004H430H3329H4578H5307H2719 22So the LORD saved Hezekiah and the people of Jerusalem from the hand of Sennacherib king of Assyria and from the hand of all others. He took care of them on every side.H3068H3467H3169H3427H3389H3027H5576H4428H804H3027H5095H5439 23Many brought offerings to Jerusalem for the LORD and valuable gifts for Hezekiah king of Judah. From then on he was highly regarded by all the nations.H7227H935H4503H3068H3389H4030H3169H4428H3063H5375H5869H1471H310

Hezekiah’s Pride, Success and Death

24In those days Hezekiah became ill and was at the point of death. He prayed to the LORD, who answered him and gave him a miraculous sign.H3117H3169H2470H4191H6419H3068H559H5414H4159 25But Hezekiah's heart was proud and he did not respond to the kindness shown him; therefore the LORD'S wrath was on him and on Judah and Jerusalem.H3169H7725H1576H3820H1361H7110H3063H3389 26Then Hezekiah repented of the pride of his heart, as did the people of Jerusalem; therefore the LORD'S wrath did not come upon them during the days of Hezekiah.H3169H3665H1363H3820H3427H3389H7110H3068H935H3117H3169 27Hezekiah had very great riches and honor, and he made treasuries for his silver and gold and for his precious stones, spices, shields and all kinds of valuables.H3169H3966H7235H6239H3519H6213H214H3701H2091H3368H68H1314H4043H2532H3627 28He also made buildings to store the harvest of grain, new wine and oil; and he made stalls for various kinds of cattle, and pens for the flocks.H4543H8393H1715H8492H3323H723H929H220H5739 29He built villages and acquired great numbers of flocks and herds, for God had given him very great riches.H6213H5892H4735H6629H1241H7230H430H5414H7399H3966H7227 30It was Hezekiah who blocked the upper outlet of the Gihon spring and channeled the water down to the west side of the City of David. He succeeded in everything he undertook.H3169H5640H5945H4161H4325H1521H3474H4295H4628H5892H1732H3169H6743H4639 31But when envoys were sent by the rulers of Babylon to ask him about the miraculous sign that had occurred in the land, God left him to test him and to know everything that was in his heart.H3651H3887H8269H894H7971H1875H4159H776H430H5800H5254H3045H3824 32The other events of Hezekiah's reign and his acts of devotion are written in the vision of the prophet Isaiah son of Amoz in the book of the kings of Judah and Israel.H3499H1697H3169H2617H3789H2377H3470H5030H1121H531H5612H4428H3063H3478 33Hezekiah rested with his fathers and was buried on the hill where the tombs of David's descendants are. All Judah and the people of Jerusalem honored him when he died. And Manasseh his son succeeded him as king.H3169H7901H1H6912H4608H6913H1121H1732H3063H3427H3389H6213H3519H4194H4519H1121H4427
