Sennacherib’s Invasion

32After these faithful deeds, Sennacherib king of Assyria came and entered Judah. He laid siege to the fortified cities and intended to break into them.H310H1697H571H5576H4428H804H935H935H3063H2583H1219H5892H559H1234
2Hezekiah saw that Sennacherib had come and that he planned war on Jerusalem,H3169H7200H5576H935H6440H4421H3389
3so he consulted with his officials and his warriors about stopping up the waters of the springs that were outside the city, and they helped him.H3289H8269H1368H5640H4325H5869H2351H5892H5826
4Many people gathered and stopped up all the springs and the stream that flowed through the land; they said, "Why should the kings of Assyria come and find plenty of water?"H6908H7227H5971H6908H5640H4599H5158H7857H8432H776H559H4428H804H935H4672H7227H4325
5Then Hezekiah strengthened his position by rebuilding the entire broken-down wall and heightening the towers and the other outside wall. He repaired the supporting terraces of the city of David, and made an abundance of weapons and shields.H2388H1129H2346H6555H5927H4026H312H2346H2351H2388H4407H5892H1732H6213H7973H4043H7230
6He set military commanders over the people and gathered the people in the square of the city gate. Then he encouraged them, saying,H5414H8269H4421H5971H6908H7339H8179H5892H1696H3824H559
7"Be strong and courageous! Don't be afraid or discouraged before the king of Assyria or before all the multitude with him, for there are more with us than with him.H2388H553H3372H2865H6440H4428H804H1995H7227
8He has only human strength, but we have the LORD our God to help us and to fight our battles." So the people relied on the words of King Hezekiah of Judah.H2220H1320H3068H430H5826H3898H4421H5971H5564H1697H3169H4428H3063

Sennacherib’s Servant’s Speech

9After this, while Sennacherib king of Assyria with all his armed forces besieged Lachish, he sent his servants to Jerusalem against King Hezekiah of Judah and against all those of Judah who were in Jerusalem, saying,H310H5576H4428H804H7971H5650H3389H3923H4475H3169H4428H3063H3063H3389H559
10"This is what King Sennacherib of Assyria says: 'What are you trusting in, you who remain under the siege of Jerusalem?H559H5576H4428H804H982H3427H4692H3389
11Isn't Hezekiah misleading you to give you over to death by famine and thirst when he says, "The LORD our God will deliver us from the power of the king of Assyria"?H3169H5496H5414H4191H7458H6772H559H3068H430H5337H3709H4428H804
12Didn't Hezekiah himself remove His high places and His altars and say to Judah and Jerusalem: "You must worship before one altar, and you must burn incense on it"?H3169H5493H1116H4196H559H3063H3389H559H7812H6440H259H4196H6999
13" 'Don't you know what I and my fathers have done to all the peoples of the lands? Have any of the national gods of the lands been able to deliver their land from my power?H3045H1H6213H5971H776H430H1471H776H3201H3201H5337H776H3027
14Who among all the gods of these nations that my fathers utterly destroyed was able to deliver his people from my power, that your God should be able to do the same for you?H430H1471H1H2763H3201H5337H5971H3027H430H3201H5337H3027
15So now, don't let Hezekiah deceive you, and don't let him mislead you like this. Don't believe him, for no god of any nation or kingdom has been able to deliver his people from my power or the power of my fathers. How much less will your gods deliver you from my power!'"H3808H2396H5377H5496H539H433H1471H4467H3201H5337H5971H3027H3027H1H430H5337H3027
16His servants said more against the LORD God and against His servant Hezekiah.H5650H1696H3068H430H5650H3169
17He also wrote letters to mock the LORD God of Israel, saying against Him: Just like the national gods of the lands that did not deliver their people from my power, so Hezekiah's God will not deliver His people from my power.H3789H5612H2778H3068H430H3478H559H559H430H1471H776H5337H5971H3027H430H3169H5337H5971H3027
18Then they called out loudly in Hebrew to the people of Jerusalem who were on the wall to frighten and discourage them in order that he might capture the city.H7121H1419H6963H3066H5971H3389H2346H3372H926H3920H5892
19They spoke against the God of Jerusalem like they had spoken against the gods of the peoples of the land, which were made by human hands.H1696H5921H430H3389H430H5971H776H4639H3027H120

Deliverance from Sennacherib

20King Hezekiah and the prophet Isaiah son of Amoz prayed about this and cried out to heaven,H3169H4428H5030H3470H1121H531H6419H2199H8064
21and the LORD sent an angel who annihilated every brave warrior, leader, and commander in the camp of the king of Assyria. So the king of Assyria returned with shame to his land. He went to the temple of his god, and there some of his own children cut him down with the sword.H3068H7971H4397H3582H1368H2428H5057H8269H4264H4428H804H7725H1322H6440H776H935H1004H430H3329H4578H5307H2719
22So the LORD saved Hezekiah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem from the power of King Sennacherib of Assyria and from the power of all others. He gave them rest on every side.H3068H3467H3169H3427H3389H3027H5576H4428H804H3027H5095H5439
23Many were bringing an offering to the LORD to Jerusalem and valuable gifts to King Hezekiah of Judah, and he was exalted in the eyes of all the nations after that.H7227H935H4503H3068H3389H4030H3169H4428H3063H5375H5869H1471H310

Hezekiah’s Illness and Pride

24In those days Hezekiah became sick to the point of death, so he prayed to the LORD, and He spoke to him and gave him a miraculous sign.H3117H3169H2470H4191H6419H3068H559H5414H4159
25However, because his heart was proud, Hezekiah didn't respond according to the benefit that had come to him. So there was wrath upon him, upon Judah, and upon Jerusalem.H3169H7725H1576H3820H1361H7110H3063H3389
26Then Hezekiah humbled himself for the pride of his heart— he and the inhabitants of Jerusalem— so the LORD's wrath didn't come on them during Hezekiah's lifetime.H3169H3665H1363H3820H3427H3389H7110H3068H935H3117H3169

Hezekiah’s Wealth and Works

27Hezekiah had abundant riches and glory, and he made himself treasuries for silver, gold, precious stones, spices, shields, and every desirable item.H3169H3966H7235H6239H3519H6213H214H3701H2091H3368H68H1314H4043H2532H3627
28He made warehouses for the harvest of grain, wine, and oil, and stalls for all kinds of cattle, and pens for flocks.H4543H8393H1715H8492H3323H723H929H220H5739
29He made cities for himself, and he acquired herds of sheep and cattle in abundance, for God gave him abundant possessions.H6213H5892H4735H6629H1241H7230H430H5414H7399H3966H7227
30This same Hezekiah blocked the outlet of the water of the Upper Gihon and channeled it smoothly downward and westward to the city of David. Hezekiah succeeded in everything he did.H3169H5640H5945H4161H4325H1521H3474H4295H4628H5892H1732H3169H6743H4639
31When the ambassadors of Babylon's rulers were sent to him to inquire about the miraculous sign that happened in the land, God left him to test him and discover what was in his heart.H3651H3887H8269H894H7971H1875H4159H776H430H5800H5254H3045H3824

Hezekiah’s Death

32As for the rest of the events of Hezekiah's [reign] and his deeds of faithful love, note that they are written about in the Visions of the Prophet Isaiah son of Amoz, and in the Book of the Kings of Judah and Israel.H3499H1697H3169H2617H3789H2377H3470H5030H1121H531H5612H4428H3063H3478
33Hezekiah rested with his fathers and was buried on the ascent to the tombs of David's descendants. All Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem paid him honor at his death. His son Manasseh became king in his place.H3169H7901H1H6912H4608H6913H1121H1732H3063H3427H3389H6213H3519H4194H4519H1121H4427
