Sennacherib’s Invasion

32After these things and these acts of faithfulness, King Sennacherib of Assyria came and invaded Judah and encamped against the fortified cities, thinking to win them for himself.H310H1697H571H5576H4428H804H935H935H3063H2583H1219H5892H559H1234 2When Hezekiah saw that Sennacherib had come and intended to fight against Jerusalem,H3169H7200H5576H935H6440H4421H3389 3he planned with his officers and his warriors to stop the flow of the springs that were outside the city; and they helped him.H3289H8269H1368H5640H4325H5869H2351H5892H5826 4A great many people were gathered, and they stopped all the springs and the wadi that flowed through the land, saying, "Why should the Assyrian kings come and find water in abundance?"H6908H7227H5971H6908H5640H4599H5158H7857H8432H776H559H4428H804H935H4672H7227H4325 5Hezekiah set to work resolutely and built up the entire wall that was broken down, and raised towers on it, and outside it he built another wall; he also strengthened the Millo in the city of David, and made weapons and shields in abundance.H2388H1129H2346H6555H5927H4026H312H2346H2351H2388H4407H5892H1732H6213H7973H4043H7230 6He appointed combat commanders over the people, and gathered them together to him in the square at the gate of the city and spoke encouragingly to them, saying,H5414H8269H4421H5971H6908H7339H8179H5892H1696H3824H559 7"Be strong and of good courage. Do not be afraid or dismayed before the king of Assyria and all the horde that is with him; for there is one greater with us than with him.H2388H553H3372H2865H6440H4428H804H1995H7227 8With him is an arm of flesh; but with us is the LORD our God, to help us and to fight our battles." The people were encouraged by the words of King Hezekiah of Judah.H2220H1320H3068H430H5826H3898H4421H5971H5564H1697H3169H4428H3063 9After this, while King Sennacherib of Assyria was at Lachish with all his forces, he sent his servants to Jerusalem to King Hezekiah of Judah and to all the people of Judah that were in Jerusalem, saying,H310H5576H4428H804H7971H5650H3389H3923H4475H3169H4428H3063H3063H3389H559 10"Thus says King Sennacherib of Assyria: On what are you relying, that you undergo the siege of Jerusalem?H559H5576H4428H804H982H3427H4692H3389 11Is not Hezekiah misleading you, handing you over to die by famine and by thirst, when he tells you, 'The LORD our God will save us from the hand of the king of Assyria'?H3169H5496H5414H4191H7458H6772H559H3068H430H5337H3709H4428H804 12Was it not this same Hezekiah who took away his high places and his altars and commanded Judah and Jerusalem, saying, 'Before one altar you shall worship, and upon it you shall make your offerings'?H3169H5493H1116H4196H559H3063H3389H559H7812H6440H259H4196H6999 13Do you not know what I and my ancestors have done to all the peoples of other lands? Were the gods of the nations of those lands at all able to save their lands out of my hand?H3045H1H6213H5971H776H430H1471H776H3201H3201H5337H776H3027 14Who among all the gods of those nations that my ancestors utterly destroyed was able to save his people from my hand, that your God should be able to save you from my hand?H430H1471H1H2763H3201H5337H5971H3027H430H3201H5337H3027 15Now therefore do not let Hezekiah deceive you or mislead you in this fashion, and do not believe him, for no god of any nation or kingdom has been able to save his people from my hand or from the hand of my ancestors. How much less will your God save you out of my hand!"H3808H2396H5377H5496H539H433H1471H4467H3201H5337H5971H3027H3027H1H430H5337H3027 16His servants said still more against the Lord GOD and against his servant Hezekiah.H5650H1696H3068H430H5650H3169 17He also wrote letters to throw contempt on the LORD the God of Israel and to speak against him, saying, "Just as the gods of the nations in other lands did not rescue their people from my hands, so the God of Hezekiah will not rescue his people from my hand."H3789H5612H2778H3068H430H3478H559H559H430H1471H776H5337H5971H3027H430H3169H5337H5971H3027 18They shouted it with a loud voice in the language of Judah to the people of Jerusalem who were on the wall, to frighten and terrify them, in order that they might take the city.H7121H1419H6963H3066H5971H3389H2346H3372H926H3920H5892 19They spoke of the God of Jerusalem as if he were like the gods of the peoples of the earth, which are the work of human hands.H1696H5921H430H3389H430H5971H776H4639H3027H120

Sennacherib’s Defeat and Death

20Then King Hezekiah and the prophet Isaiah son of Amoz prayed because of this and cried to heaven.H3169H4428H5030H3470H1121H531H6419H2199H8064 21And the LORD sent an angel who cut off all the mighty warriors and commanders and officers in the camp of the king of Assyria. So he returned in disgrace to his own land. When he came into the house of his god, some of his own sons struck him down there with the sword.H3068H7971H4397H3582H1368H2428H5057H8269H4264H4428H804H7725H1322H6440H776H935H1004H430H3329H4578H5307H2719 22So the LORD saved Hezekiah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem from the hand of King Sennacherib of Assyria and from the hand of all his enemies; he gave them rest on every side.H3068H3467H3169H3427H3389H3027H5576H4428H804H3027H5095H5439 23Many brought gifts to the LORD in Jerusalem and precious things to King Hezekiah of Judah, so that he was exalted in the sight of all nations from that time onward.H7227H935H4503H3068H3389H4030H3169H4428H3063H5375H5869H1471H310

Hezekiah’s Sickness

24In those days Hezekiah became sick and was at the point of death. He prayed to the LORD, and he answered him and gave him a sign.H3117H3169H2470H4191H6419H3068H559H5414H4159 25But Hezekiah did not respond according to the benefit done to him, for his heart was proud. Therefore wrath came upon him and upon Judah and Jerusalem.H3169H7725H1576H3820H1361H7110H3063H3389 26Then Hezekiah humbled himself for the pride of his heart, both he and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so that the wrath of the LORD did not come upon them in the days of Hezekiah.H3169H3665H1363H3820H3427H3389H7110H3068H935H3117H3169

Hezekiah’s Prosperity and Achievements

27Hezekiah had very great riches and honor; and he made for himself treasuries for silver, for gold, for precious stones, for spices, for shields, and for all kinds of costly objects;H3169H3966H7235H6239H3519H6213H214H3701H2091H3368H68H1314H4043H2532H3627 28storehouses also for the yield of grain, wine, and oil; and stalls for all kinds of cattle, and sheepfolds.H4543H8393H1715H8492H3323H723H929H220H5739 29He likewise provided cities for himself, and flocks and herds in abundance; for God had given him very great possessions.H6213H5892H4735H6629H1241H7230H430H5414H7399H3966H7227 30This same Hezekiah closed the upper outlet of the waters of Gihon and directed them down to the west side of the city of David. Hezekiah prospered in all his works.H3169H5640H5945H4161H4325H1521H3474H4295H4628H5892H1732H3169H6743H4639 31So also in the matter of the envoys of the officials of Babylon, who had been sent to him to inquire about the sign that had been done in the land, God left him to himself, in order to test him and to know all that was in his heart.H3651H3887H8269H894H7971H1875H4159H776H430H5800H5254H3045H3824 32Now the rest of the acts of Hezekiah, and his good deeds, are written in the vision of the prophet Isaiah son of Amoz in the Book of the Kings of Judah and Israel.H3499H1697H3169H2617H3789H2377H3470H5030H1121H531H5612H4428H3063H3478 33Hezekiah slept with his ancestors, and they buried him on the ascent to the tombs of the descendants of David; and all Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem did him honor at his death. His son Manasseh succeeded him.H3169H7901H1H6912H4608H6913H1121H1732H3063H3427H3389H6213H3519H4194H4519H1121H4427
