The Miracle of the Ax Head

6Now the company of prophets said to Elisha, "As you see, the place where we live under your charge is too small for us.H1121H5030H559H6440H477H4725H3427H6862 2Let us go to the Jordan, and let us collect logs there, one for each of us, and build a place there for us to live." He answered, "Do so."H3212H3383H3947H376H259H6982H6213H4725H3427H559H3212 3Then one of them said, "Please come with your servants." And he answered, "I will."H259H559H2974H3212H5650H559H3212 4So he went with them. When they came to the Jordan, they cut down trees.H3212H935H3383H1504H6086 5But as one was felling a log, his ax head fell into the water; he cried out, "Alas, master! It was borrowed."H259H5307H6982H1270H5307H4325H6817H559H162H113H7592 6Then the man of God said, "Where did it fall?" When he showed him the place, he cut off a stick, and threw it in there, and made the iron float.H376H430H559H575H5307H7200H4725H7094H6086H7993H1270H6687 7He said, "Pick it up." So he reached out his hand and took it.H559H7311H7971H3027H3947

The Aramean Attack Is Thwarted

8Once when the king of Aram was at war with Israel, he took counsel with his officers. He said, "At such and such a place shall be my camp."H4428H758H3898H3478H3289H5650H559H6423H492H4725H8466 9But the man of God sent word to the king of Israel, "Take care not to pass this place, because the Arameans are going down there."H376H430H7971H4428H3478H559H8104H5674H2088H4725H758H5185 10The king of Israel sent word to the place of which the man of God spoke. More than once or twice he warned such a place so that it was on the alert.H4428H3478H7971H4725H376H430H559H2094H8104H259H8147 11The mind of the king of Aram was greatly perturbed because of this; he called his officers and said to them, "Now tell me who among us sides with the king of Israel?"H3820H4428H758H5590H1697H7121H5650H559H5046H4428H3478 12Then one of his officers said, "No one, my lord king. It is Elisha, the prophet in Israel, who tells the king of Israel the words that you speak in your bedchamber."H259H5650H559H113H4428H477H5030H3478H5046H4428H3478H1697H1696H2315H4904 13He said, "Go and find where he is; I will send and seize him." He was told, "He is in Dothan."H559H3212H7200H351H7971H3947H5046H559H1886 14So he sent horses and chariots there and a great army; they came by night, and surrounded the city.H7971H5483H7393H3515H2428H935H3915H5362H5892H5362 15When an attendant of the man of God rose early in the morning and went out, an army with horses and chariots was all around the city. His servant said, "Alas, master! What shall we do?"H8334H376H430H6965H7925H3318H2428H5437H5892H5483H7393H5288H559H162H113H6213 16He replied, "Do not be afraid, for there are more with us than there are with them."H559H3372H7227 17Then Elisha prayed: "O LORD, please open his eyes that he may see." So the LORD opened the eyes of the servant, and he saw; the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.H477H6419H559H3068H6491H5869H7200H3068H6491H5869H5288H7200H2022H4390H5483H7393H784H5439H477 18When the Arameans came down against him, Elisha prayed to the LORD, and said, "Strike this people, please, with blindness." So he struck them with blindness as Elisha had asked.H3381H477H6419H3068H559H5221H1471H5575H5221H5575H1697H477 19Elisha said to them, "This is not the way, and this is not the city; follow me, and I will bring you to the man whom you seek." And he led them to Samaria.H477H559H1870H2090H5892H3212H310H3212H376H1245H3212H8111 20As soon as they entered Samaria, Elisha said, "O LORD, open the eyes of these men so that they may see." The LORD opened their eyes, and they saw that they were inside Samaria.H935H8111H477H559H3068H6491H5869H7200H3068H6491H5869H7200H8432H8111 21When the king of Israel saw them he said to Elisha, "Father, shall I kill them? Shall I kill them?"H4428H3478H559H477H7200H1H5221H5221 22He answered, "No! Did you capture with your sword and your bow those whom you want to kill? Set food and water before them so that they may eat and drink; and let them go to their master."H559H5221H5221H7617H2719H7198H7760H3899H4325H6440H398H8354H3212H113 23So he prepared for them a great feast; after they ate and drank, he sent them on their way, and they went to their master. And the Arameans no longer came raiding into the land of Israel.H3739H1419H3740H398H8354H7971H3212H113H1416H758H935H3254H776H3478

Ben-hadad’s Siege of Samaria

24Some time later King Ben-hadad of Aram mustered his entire army; he marched against Samaria and laid siege to it.H310H1130H4428H758H6908H4264H5927H6696H8111 25As the siege continued, famine in Samaria became so great that a donkey's head was sold for eighty shekels of silver, and one-fourth of a kab of dove's dung for five shekels of silver.H1419H7458H8111H6696H2543H7218H8084H3701H7255H6894H1686H3123H2755H2568H3701 26Now as the king of Israel was walking on the city wall, a woman cried out to him, "Help, my lord king!"H4428H3478H5674H2346H6817H802H559H3467H113H4428 27He said, "No! Let the LORD help you. How can I help you? From the threshing floor or from the wine press?"H559H3068H3467H370H3467H1637H3342 28But then the king asked her, "What is your complaint?" She answered, "This woman said to me, 'Give up your son; we will eat him today, and we will eat my son tomorrow.'H4428H559H559H802H559H5414H1121H398H3117H398H1121H4279 29So we cooked my son and ate him. The next day I said to her, 'Give up your son and we will eat him.' But she has hidden her son."H1310H1121H398H559H312H3117H5414H1121H398H2244H1121 30When the king heard the words of the woman he tore his clothes—now since he was walking on the city wall, the people could see that he had sackcloth on his body underneath—H4428H8085H1697H802H7167H899H5674H2346H5971H7200H8242H1004H1320 31and he said, "So may God do to me, and more, if the head of Elisha son of Shaphat stays on his shoulders today."H559H430H6213H3254H7218H477H1121H8202H5975H3117 32So he dispatched a man from his presence. Now Elisha was sitting in his house, and the elders were sitting with him. Before the messenger arrived, Elisha said to the elders, "Are you aware that this murderer has sent someone to take off my head? When the messenger comes, see that you shut the door and hold it closed against him. Is not the sound of his master's feet behind him?"H477H3427H1004H2205H3427H7971H376H6440H4397H935H559H2205H7200H1121H7523H7971H5493H7218H7200H4397H935H5462H1817H3905H1817H6963H113H7272H310 33While he was still speaking with them, the king came down to him and said, "This trouble is from the LORD! Why should I hope in the LORD any longer?"H1696H4397H3381H559H7451H3068H3176H3068
