Today's New International Version Help
9The prophet Elisha summoned a man from the company of the prophets and said to him, "Tuck your cloak into your belt, take this flask of oil with you and go to Ramoth Gilead.H477H5030H7121H259H1121H5030H559H2296H4975H3947H6378H8081H3027H3212H7433H1568
2When you get there, look for Jehu son of Jehoshaphat, the son of Nimshi. Go to him, get him away from his companions and take him into an inner room.H935H7200H3058H1121H3092H1121H5250H935H6965H8432H251H935H2315H2315
3Then take the flask and pour the oil on his head and declare, 'This is what the LORD says: I anoint you king over Israel.' Then open the door and run; don't delay!"H3947H6378H8081H3332H7218H559H559H3068H4886H4428H3478H6605H1817H5127H2442
4So the young prophet went to Ramoth Gilead.H5288H5288H5030H3212H7433H1568
5When he arrived, he found the army officers sitting together. "I have a message for you, commander," he said. "For which of us?" asked Jehu. "For you, commander," he replied.H935H8269H2428H3427H559H1697H8269H3058H559H559H8269
6Jehu got up and went into the house. Then the prophet poured the oil on Jehu's head and declared, "This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: 'I anoint you king over the LORD's people Israel.H6965H935H1004H3332H8081H7218H559H559H3068H430H3478H4886H4428H5971H3068H3478
7You are to destroy the house of Ahab your master, and I will avenge the blood of my servants the prophets and the blood of all the LORD's servants shed by Jezebel.H5221H1004H256H113H5358H1818H5650H5030H1818H5650H3068H3027H348
8The whole house of Ahab will perish. I will cut off from Ahab every last male in Israel—slave or free.H1004H256H6H3772H256H8366H7023H6113H5800H3478
9I will make the house of Ahab like the house of Jeroboam son of Nebat and like the house of Baasha son of Ahijah.H5414H1004H256H1004H3379H1121H5028H1004H1201H1121H281
10As for Jezebel, dogs will devour her on the plot of ground at Jezreel, and no one will bury her.' " Then he opened the door and ran.H3611H398H348H2506H3157H6912H6605H1817H5127
11When Jehu went out to his fellow officers, one of them asked him, "Is everything all right? Why did this maniac come to you?" "You know the man and the sort of things he says," Jehu replied.H3058H3318H5650H113H559H7965H935H7696H559H3045H376H7879
12"That's not true!" they said. "Tell us." Jehu said, "Here is what he told me: 'This is what the LORD says: I anoint you king over Israel.'"H559H8267H5046H559H559H559H559H3068H4886H4428H3478
13They quickly took their cloaks and spread them under him on the bare steps. Then they blew the trumpet and shouted, "Jehu is king!"H4116H3947H376H899H7760H1634H4609H8628H7782H559H3058H4427
14So Jehu son of Jehoshaphat, the son of Nimshi, conspired against Joram. (Now Joram and all Israel had been defending Ramoth Gilead against Hazael king of Aram,H3058H1121H3092H1121H5250H7194H3141H3141H8104H7433H1568H3478H6440H2371H4428H758
15but King Joram had returned to Jezreel to recover from the wounds the Arameans had inflicted on him in the battle with Hazael king of Aram.) Jehu said, "If you desire to make me king, don't let anyone slip out of the city to go and tell the news in Jezreel."H4428H3088H7725H7495H3157H4347H761H5221H3898H2371H4428H758H3058H559H3426H5315H408H3318H6412H5892H3212H5046H3157
16Then he got into his chariot and rode to Jezreel, because Joram was resting there and Ahaziah king of Judah had gone down to see him.H3058H7392H3212H3157H3141H7901H274H4428H3063H3381H7200H3141
17When the lookout standing on the tower in Jezreel saw Jehu's troops approaching, he called out, "I see some troops coming." "Get a horseman," Joram ordered. "Send him to meet them and ask, 'Do you come in peace?' "H5975H6822H4026H3157H7200H8229H3058H935H559H7200H8229H3088H559H3947H7395H7971H7125H559H7965
18The horseman rode off to meet Jehu and said, "This is what the king says: 'Do you come in peace?' " "What do you have to do with peace?" Jehu replied. "Fall in behind me." The lookout reported, "The messenger has reached them, but he isn't coming back."H3212H7392H5483H7125H559H559H4428H7965H3058H559H7965H5437H310H6822H5046H559H4397H935H7725
19So the king sent out a second horseman. When he came to them he said, "This is what the king says: 'Do you come in peace?' " Jehu replied, "What do you have to do with peace? Fall in behind me."H7971H8145H7392H5483H935H559H559H4428H7965H3058H559H7965H5437H310
20The lookout reported, "He has reached them, but he isn't coming back either. The driving is like that of Jehu son of Nimshi—he drives like a maniac."H6822H5046H559H935H7725H4491H4491H3058H1121H5250H5090H7697
21"Hitch up my chariot," Joram ordered. And when it was hitched up, Joram king of Israel and Ahaziah king of Judah rode out, each in his own chariot, to meet Jehu. They met him at the plot of ground that had belonged to Naboth the Jezreelite.H3088H559H631H7393H631H3088H4428H3478H274H4428H3063H3318H376H7393H3318H7125H3058H4672H2513H5022H3158
22When Joram saw Jehu he asked, "Have you come in peace, Jehu?" "How can there be peace," Jehu replied, "as long as all the idolatry and witchcraft of your mother Jezebel abound?"H3088H7200H3058H559H7965H3058H559H7965H5704H2183H517H348H3785H7227
23Joram turned about and fled, calling out to Ahaziah, "Treachery, Ahaziah!"H3088H2015H3027H5127H559H274H4820H274
24Then Jehu drew his bow and shot Joram between the shoulders. The arrow pierced his heart and he slumped down in his chariot.H3058H7198H4390H3027H5221H3088H2220H2678H3318H3820H3766H7393
25Jehu said to Bidkar, his chariot officer, "Pick him up and throw him on the field that belonged to Naboth the Jezreelite. Remember how you and I were riding together in chariots behind Ahab his father when the LORD spoke this prophecy against him:H559H920H7991H5375H7993H2513H7704H5022H3158H2142H7392H6776H310H256H1H3068H5375H4853
26'Yesterday I saw the blood of Naboth and the blood of his sons, declares the LORD, and I will surely make you pay for it on this plot of ground, declares the LORD.' Now then, pick him up and throw him on that plot, in accordance with the word of the LORD."H7200H570H1818H5022H1818H1121H5002H3068H7999H2513H5002H3068H5375H7993H2513H1697H3068
27When Ahaziah king of Judah saw what had happened, he fled up the road to Beth Haggan. Jehu chased him, shouting, "Kill him too!" They wounded him in his chariot on the way up to Gur near Ibleam, but he escaped to Megiddo and died there.H274H4428H3063H7200H5127H1870H1588H1004H3058H7291H310H559H5221H4818H4608H1483H2991H5127H4023H4191
28His servants took him by chariot to Jerusalem and buried him with his ancestors in his tomb in the City of David.H5650H7392H3389H6912H6900H1H5892H1732
29(In the eleventh year of Joram son of Ahab, Ahaziah had become king of Judah.)H259H6240H8141H8141H3141H1121H256H274H4427H3063
30Then Jehu went to Jezreel. When Jezebel heard about it, she painted her eyes, arranged her hair and looked out of a window.H3058H935H3157H348H8085H7760H6320H5869H3190H7218H8259H2474
31As Jehu entered the gate, she asked, "Have you come in peace, you Zimri, you murderer of your master?"H3058H935H8179H559H2174H7965H2026H113
32He looked up at the window and called out, "Who is on my side? Who?" Two or three eunuchs looked down at him.H5375H6440H2474H559H8259H8147H7969H5631
33"Throw her down!" Jehu said. So they threw her down, and some of her blood spattered the wall and the horses as they trampled her underfoot.H559H8058H8058H1818H5137H7023H5483H7429
34Jehu went in and ate and drank. "Take care of that cursed woman," he said, "and bury her, for she was a king's daughter."H935H398H8354H559H6485H779H6912H4428H1323
35But when they went out to bury her, they found nothing except her skull, her feet and her hands.H3212H6912H4672H518H1538H7272H3709H3027
36They went back and told Jehu, who said, "This is the word of the LORD that he spoke through his servant Elijah the Tishbite: On the plot of ground at Jezreel dogs will devour Jezebel's flesh.H7725H5046H559H1697H3068H1696H3027H5650H452H8664H559H2506H3157H3611H398H1320H348
37Jezebel's body will be like dung on the ground in the plot at Jezreel, so that no one will be able to say, 'This is Jezebel.' "H5038H348H1828H6440H7704H2506H3157H559H348
