David Learns of Saul’s Death

1Now it came about after the death of Saul, when David had returned from the slaughter of the Amalekites, that David remained two days in Ziklag.H310H4194H7586H1732H7725H5221H6002H1732H3427H8147H3117H6860 2And it happened on the third day, that behold, a man came out of the camp from Saul, with his clothes torn and dust on his head. And it came about when he came to David that he fell to the ground and prostrated himself.H7992H3117H376H935H4264H7586H899H7167H127H7218H935H1732H5307H776H7812 3Then David said to him, "From where do you come?" And he said to him, "I have escaped from the camp of Israel."H1732H559H935H559H4264H3478H4422 4And David said to him, "How did things go? Please tell me." And he said, "The people have fled from the battle, and also many of the people have fallen and are dead; and Saul and Jonathan his son are dead also."H1732H559H4100H1697H5046H559H5971H5127H4421H7235H5971H5307H4191H7586H3083H1121H4191 5So David said to the young man who told him, "How do you know that Saul and his son Jonathan are dead?"H1732H559H5288H5046H3045H7586H3083H1121H4191 6And the young man who told him said, "By chance I happened to be on Mount Gilboa, and behold, Saul was leaning on his spear. And behold, the chariots and the horsemen pursued him closely.H5288H5046H559H7136H7122H2022H1533H7586H8172H2595H7393H1167H6571H1692 7"And when he looked behind him, he saw me and called to me. And I said, 'Here I am.'H6437H310H7200H7121H559 8"And he said to me, 'Who are you?' And I answered him, 'I am an Amalekite.'H559H559H6003 9"Then he said to me, 'Please stand beside me and kill me; for agony has seized me because my life still lingers in me.'H559H5975H4191H7661H270H5315 10"So I stood beside him and killed him, because I knew that he could not live after he had fallen. And I took the crown which [was] on his head and the bracelet which [was] on his arm, and I have brought them here to my lord."H5975H4191H3045H2421H310H5307H3947H5145H7218H685H2220H935H113 11Then David took hold of his clothes and tore them, and [so] also [ did] all the men who [were] with him.H1732H2388H899H7167H582 12And they mourned and wept and fasted until evening for Saul and his son Jonathan and for the people of the LORD and the house of Israel, because they had fallen by the sword.H5594H1058H6684H6153H7586H3083H1121H5971H3068H1004H3478H5307H2719 13And David said to the young man who told him, "Where are you from?" And he answered," I am the son of an alien, an Amalekite. "H1732H559H5288H5046H559H1121H376H1616H6003 14Then David said to him, "How is it you were not afraid to stretch out your hand to destroy the Lord's anointed?"H1732H559H3372H7971H3027H7843H3068H4899 15And David called one of the young men and said, "Go, cut him down." So he struck him and he died.H1732H7121H259H5288H559H5066H6293H5221H4191 16And David said to him, "Your blood is on your head, for your mouth has testified against you, saying, 'I have killed the Lord's anointed.'"H1732H559H1818H7218H6310H6030H559H4191H3068H4899

David’s Dirge for Saul and Jonathan

17Then David chanted with this lament over Saul and Jonathan his son,H1732H6969H7015H7586H3083H1121 18and he told [them] to teach the sons of Judah [the song of] the bow; behold, it is written in the book of Jashar.H559H3925H1121H3063H7198H3789H5612H3477 19"Your beauty, O Israel, is slain on your high places! How have the mighty fallen!H6643H3478H2491H1116H1368H5307 20"Tell [it] not in Gath, Proclaim it not in the streets of Ashkelon; Lest the daughters of the Philistines rejoice, Lest the daughters of the uncircumcised exult.H5046H1661H1319H2351H831H1323H6430H8055H1323H6189H5937 21"O mountains of Gilboa, Let not dew or rain be on you, nor fields of offerings; For there the shield of the mighty was defiled, The shield of Saul, not anointed with oil.H2022H1533H2919H4306H7704H8641H4043H1368H1602H4043H7586H4899H8081 22"From the blood of the slain, from the fat of the mighty, The bow of Jonathan did not turn back, And the sword of Saul did not return empty.H1818H2491H2459H1368H7198H3083H7734H268H2719H7586H7725H7387 23"Saul and Jonathan, beloved and pleasant in their life, And in their death they were not parted; They were swifter than eagles, They were stronger than lions.H7586H3083H157H5273H2416H4194H6504H7043H5404H1396H738 24"O daughters of Israel, weep over Saul, Who clothed you luxuriously in scarlet, Who put ornaments of gold on your apparel.H1323H3478H1058H7586H3847H8144H5730H5927H5716H2091H3830 25"How have the mighty fallen in the midst of the battle! Jonathan is slain on your high places.H1368H5307H8432H4421H3083H2491H1116 26"I am distressed for you, my brother Jonathan; You have been very pleasant to me. Your love to me was more wonderful Than the love of women.H6887H251H3083H3966H5276H160H6381H160H802 27"How have the mighty fallen, And the weapons of war perished!"H1368H5307H3627H4421H6
