The Report of Saul’s Death

1Now it came to pass after the death of Saul, when David had returned from the slaughter of the Amalekites, and David had stayed two days in Ziklag,H310H4194H7586H1732H7725H5221H6002H1732H3427H8147H3117H6860 2on the third day, behold, it happened that a man came from Saul's camp with his clothes torn and dust on his head. So it was, when he came to David, that he fell to the ground and prostrated himself.H7992H3117H376H935H4264H7586H899H7167H127H7218H935H1732H5307H776H7812 3And David said to him, "Where have you come from?" So he said to him, "I have escaped from the camp of Israel."H1732H559H935H559H4264H3478H4422 4Then David said to him, "How did the matter go? Please tell me." And he answered, "The people have fled from the battle, many of the people are fallen and dead, and Saul and Jonathan his son are dead also."H1732H559H4100H1697H5046H559H5971H5127H4421H7235H5971H5307H4191H7586H3083H1121H4191 5So David said to the young man who told him, "How do you know that Saul and Jonathan his son are dead?"H1732H559H5288H5046H3045H7586H3083H1121H4191 6Then the young man who told him said, "As I happened by chance to be on Mount Gilboa, there was Saul, leaning on his spear; and indeed the chariots and horsemen followed hard after him.H5288H5046H559H7136H7122H2022H1533H7586H8172H2595H7393H1167H6571H1692 7"Now when he looked behind him, he saw me and called to me. And I answered, 'Here I am.'H6437H310H7200H7121H559 8"And he said to me, 'Who are you?' So I answered him, 'I am an Amalekite.'H559H559H6003 9"He said to me again, 'Please stand over me and kill me, for anguish has come upon me, but my life still remains in me.'H559H5975H4191H7661H270H5315 10"So I stood over him and killed him, because I was sure that he could not live after he had fallen. And I took the crown that was on his head and the bracelet that was on his arm, and have brought them here to my lord."H5975H4191H3045H2421H310H5307H3947H5145H7218H685H2220H935H113 11Therefore David took hold of his own clothes and tore them, and so did all the men who were with him.H1732H2388H899H7167H582 12And they mourned and wept and fasted until evening for Saul and for Jonathan his son, for the people of the LORD and for the house of Israel, because they had fallen by the sword.H5594H1058H6684H6153H7586H3083H1121H5971H3068H1004H3478H5307H2719 13Then David said to the young man who told him, "Where are you from?" And he answered, "I am the son of an alien, an Amalekite."H1732H559H5288H5046H559H1121H376H1616H6003 14So David said to him, "How was it you were not afraid to put forth your hand to destroy the LORD'S anointed?"H1732H559H3372H7971H3027H7843H3068H4899 15Then David called one of the young men and said, "Go near, and execute him!" And he struck him so that he died.H1732H7121H259H5288H559H5066H6293H5221H4191 16So David said to him, "Your blood is on your own head, for your own mouth has testified against you, saying, 'I have killed the LORD'S anointed.'"H1732H559H1818H7218H6310H6030H559H4191H3068H4899

The Song of the Bow

17Then David lamented with this lamentation over Saul and over Jonathan his son,H1732H6969H7015H7586H3083H1121 18and he told them to teach the children of Judah the Song of the Bow; indeed it is written in the Book of Jasher:H559H3925H1121H3063H7198H3789H5612H3477 19"The beauty of Israel is slain on your high places! How the mighty have fallen!H6643H3478H2491H1116H1368H5307 20Tell it not in Gath, Proclaim it not in the streets of Ashkelon—Lest the daughters of the Philistines rejoice, Lest the daughters of the uncircumcised triumph.H5046H1661H1319H2351H831H1323H6430H8055H1323H6189H5937 21"O mountains of Gilboa, Let there be no dew nor rain upon you, Nor fields of offerings. For the shield of the mighty is cast away there! The shield of Saul, not anointed with oil.H2022H1533H2919H4306H7704H8641H4043H1368H1602H4043H7586H4899H8081 22From the blood of the slain, From the fat of the mighty, The bow of Jonathan did not turn back, And the sword of Saul did not return empty.H1818H2491H2459H1368H7198H3083H7734H268H2719H7586H7725H7387 23"Saul and Jonathan were beloved and pleasant in their lives, And in their death they were not divided; They were swifter than eagles, They were stronger than lions.H7586H3083H157H5273H2416H4194H6504H7043H5404H1396H738 24"O daughters of Israel, weep over Saul, Who clothed you in scarlet, with luxury; Who put ornaments of gold on your apparel.H1323H3478H1058H7586H3847H8144H5730H5927H5716H2091H3830 25"How the mighty have fallen in the midst of the battle! Jonathan was slain in your high places.H1368H5307H8432H4421H3083H2491H1116 26I am distressed for you, my brother Jonathan; You have been very pleasant to me; Your love to me was wonderful, Surpassing the love of women.H6887H251H3083H3966H5276H160H6381H160H802 27"How the mighty have fallen, And the weapons of war perished!"H1368H5307H3627H4421H6
