Paul Sails for Rome

27When it was decided that we should sail to Italy, they handed Paul and some other prisoners over to Julius, an officer in the Roman army regiment called "The Emperor's Regiment."G1161G5613G2919G2248G636G1519G2482G3860G5037G3972G2532G5100G2087G1202G3686G2457G1543G4575G4686
2We went aboard a ship from Adramyttium, which was ready to leave for the seaports of the province of Asia, and we sailed away. Aristarchus, a Macedonian from Thessalonica, was with us.G1161G1910G4143G98G321G3195G4126G2596G5117G773G708G3110G2331G5607G4862G2254
3The next day we arrived at Sidon. Julius was kind to Paul and allowed him to go and see his friends, to be given what he needed.G5037G2087G2609G1519G4605G5037G2457G5364G5530G3972G2010G4198G4314G5384G5177G1958
4We went on from there, and because the winds were blowing against us, we sailed on the sheltered side of the island of Cyprus.G2547G321G2547G5284G2954G1223G417G1511G1727
5We crossed over the sea off Cilicia and Pamphylia and came to Myra in Lycia.G5037G1277G3989G2596G2791G2532G3828G2718G1519G3460G3073
6There the officer found a ship from Alexandria that was going to sail for Italy, so he put us aboard.G2546G1543G2147G4143G222G4126G1519G2482G1688G2248G1519G846
7We sailed slowly for several days and with great difficulty finally arrived off the town of Cnidus. The wind would not let us go any farther in that direction, so we sailed down the sheltered side of the island of Crete, passing by Cape Salmone.G1161G1020G1722G2425G2250G2532G3433G1096G2596G2834G417G3361G4330G2248G5284G2914G2596G4534
8We kept close to the coast and with great difficulty came to a place called Safe Harbors, not far from the town of Lasea.G5037G3433G3881G846G2064G1519G5100G5117G2564G2570G2568G3040G1451G3739G2258G4172G2996
9We spent a long time there, until it became dangerous to continue the voyage, for by now the Day of Atonement was already past. So Paul gave them this advice:G1161G2425G5550G1230G2532G4144G5607G2235G2000G1223G3521G3928G2532G2235G3928G3972G3867
10"Men, I see that our voyage from here on will be dangerous; there will be great damage to the cargo and to the ship, and loss of life as well."G3004G846G435G2334G3754G4144G3195G1510G3326G5196G2532G4183G2209G3756G3440G5414G2532G4143G235G2532G2257G5590
11But the army officer was convinced by what the captain and the owner of the ship said, and not by what Paul said.G1161G1543G3982G2942G2532G3490G3123G2228G3004G5259G3972
12The harbor was not a good one to spend the winter in; so almost everyone was in favor of putting out to sea and trying to reach Phoenix, if possible, in order to spend the winter there. Phoenix is a harbor in Crete that faces southwest and northwest.G1161G5225G3040G5225G428G4314G3915G4119G1012G5087G321G2547G1513G4458G1410G2658G1519G5405G3914G3040G2914G991G2596G3047G2532G2596G5566

The Storm at Sea

13A soft wind from the south began to blow, and the men thought that they could carry out their plan, so they pulled up the anchor and sailed as close as possible along the coast of Crete.G1161G3558G5285G1380G2902G4286G142G3881G788G2914
14But soon a very strong wind - the one called "Northeaster" - blew down from the island.G1161G3756G4183G3326G906G2596G846G5189G417G2564G2148
15It hit the ship, and since it was impossible to keep the ship headed into the wind, we gave up trying and let it be carried along by the wind.G1161G4143G4884G2532G1410G3361G503G417G1929G5342
16We got some shelter when we passed to the south of the little island of Cauda. There, with some difficulty we managed to make the ship's boat secure.G1161G5295G5100G3519G2564G2802G2480G3433G2480G4031G1096G4627
17They pulled it aboard and then fastened some ropes tight around the ship. They were afraid that they might run into the sandbanks off the coast of Libya, so they lowered the sail and let the ship be carried by the wind.G3739G142G5530G996G5269G4143G5037G5399G3361G1601G1519G4950G5465G4632G3779G5342
18The violent storm continued, so on the next day they began to throw some of the ship's cargo overboard,G1161G2257G4971G5492G1836G1546G4160
19and on the following day they threw part of the ship's equipment overboard.G2532G5154G4496G849G4631G4143
20For many days we could not see the sun or the stars, and the wind kept on blowing very hard. We finally gave up all hope of being saved.G1161G3383G2246G3383G798G1909G4119G2250G2014G5037G3756G3641G5494G1945G3956G1680G2248G4982G4014G3063G4014
21After everyone had gone a long time without food, Paul stood before them and said, "You should have listened to me and not have sailed from Crete; then we would have avoided all this damage and loss.G1161G5225G4183G776G5119G3972G2476G1722G3319G846G2036G5599G435G1163G3303G3980G3427G3361G321G575G2914G5037G2770G5026G5196G2532G2209
22But now I beg you, take courage! Not one of you will lose your life; only the ship will be lost.G2532G3569G3867G5209G2114G1063G2071G3762G580G5590G1537G5216G4133G4143
23For last night an angel of the God to whom I belong and whom I worship came to meG1063G3936G3427G5026G3571G32G2316G3739G1510G2532G3739G3000
24and said, 'Don't be afraid, Paul! You must stand before the Emperor. And God in his goodness to you has spared the lives of all those who are sailing with you.'G3004G5399G3361G3972G4571G1163G3936G2541G2532G2400G2316G5483G4671G3956G4126G3326G4675
25So take courage, men! For I trust in God that it will be just as I was told.G1352G435G2114G1063G4100G2316G3754G3779G2071G2596G3739G5158G2980G3427
26But we will be driven ashore on some island."G1161G2248G1163G1601G1519G5100G3520
27It was the fourteenth night, and we were being driven in the Mediterranean by the storm. About midnight the sailors suspected that we were getting close to land.G1161G5613G5065G3571G1096G2257G1308G1722G99G2596G3319G3571G3492G5282G846G4317G5100G5561
28So they dropped a line with a weight tied to it and found that the water was one hundred and twenty feet deep; a little later they did the same and found that it was ninety feet deep.G2532G1001G2147G1501G3712G1161G1339G1024G1001G3825G2532G2147G1178G3712
29They were afraid that the ship would go on the rocks, so they lowered four anchors from the back of the ship and prayed for daylight.G5037G5399G3381G4458G1601G1601G1519G5117G5138G4496G5064G45G1537G4403G2172G1096G2250
30Then the sailors tried to escape from the ship; they lowered the boat into the water and pretended that they were going to put out some anchors from the front of the ship.G1161G3492G2212G5343G1537G4143G2532G5465G4627G1519G2281G4392G5613G3195G1614G45G1537G4408
31But Paul said to the army officer and soldiers, "If the sailors don't stay on board, you have no hope of being saved."G3972G2036G1543G2532G4757G3362G3778G3306G1722G4143G5210G3756G1410G4982
32So the soldiers cut the ropes that held the boat and let it go.G5119G4757G609G4979G4627G2532G1439G846G1601
33Just before dawn, Paul begged them all to eat some food: "You have been waiting for fourteen days now, and all this time you have not eaten a thing.G1161G891G3739G2250G1096G3195G3972G3870G537G3335G5160G3004G4594G5065G2250G4328G1300G777G4355G3367
34I beg you, then, eat some food; you need it in order to survive. Not even a hair of your heads will be lost."G1352G3870G5209G4355G5160G1063G5124G5225G4314G5212G4991G1063G4098G3762G2359G4098G1537G2776G3762G5216
35After saying this, Paul took some bread, gave thanks to God before them all, broke it, and began to eat.G1161G5023G2036G2532G2983G740G2168G2316G1799G3956G2532G2806G756G2068
36They took courage, and every one of them also ate some food.G1161G1096G846G1096G3956G2115G4355G2532G4355G5160
37There was a total of 276 of us on board.G1161G2258G3956G1722G4143G1250G1440G1803G5590
38After everyone had eaten enough, they lightened the ship by throwing all the wheat into the sea.G1161G5160G2880G2893G4143G1544G4621G1519G2281

The Shipwreck

39When day came, the sailors did not recognize the coast, but they noticed a bay with a beach and decided that, if possible, they would run the ship aground there.G1161G3753G1096G2250G1921G3756G1093G1161G2657G5100G2859G2192G123G1519G3739G1011G1487G1410G1856G4143
40So they cut off the anchors and let them sink in the sea, and at the same time they untied the ropes that held the steering oars. Then they raised the sail at the front of the ship so that the wind would blow the ship forward, and we headed for shore.G2532G4014G45G1439G1519G2281G260G447G4079G2202G2532G1869G736G4154G2722G1519G123
41But the ship hit a sandbank and went aground; the front part of the ship got stuck and could not move, while the back part was being broken to pieces by the violence of the waves.G1161G4045G1519G5117G1337G2027G3491G2027G2532G4408G3303G2043G3306G761G1161G4403G3089G5259G970G2949
42The soldiers made a plan to kill all the prisoners, in order to keep them from swimming ashore and escaping.G1161G4757G1012G1096G2443G615G1202G3361G5100G1579G1309
43But the army officer wanted to save Paul, so he stopped them from doing this. Instead, he ordered everyone who could swim to jump overboard first and swim ashore;G1161G1543G1014G1295G3972G2967G846G1013G5037G2753G1410G2860G641G4413G1826G1909G1093
44the rest were to follow, holding on to the planks or to some broken pieces of the ship. And this was how we all got safely ashore.G2532G3062G3739G3303G1909G4548G1161G3739G1909G575G4143G5100G2532G3779G1096G1295G3956G1295G1909G1093
