Put On the New Self

3IF THEN you have been raised with Christ [to a new life, thus sharing His resurrection from the dead], aim at {and} seek the [rich, eternal treasures] that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God.G1487G4891G3767G4891G5547G2212G507G3757G5547G2076G2521G1722G1188G2316
2And set your minds {and} keep them set on what is above (the higher things), not on the things that are on the earth.G5426G507G3361G1909G1093
3For [as far as this world is concerned] you have died, and your [new, real] life is hidden with Christ in God.G1063G599G2532G5216G2222G2928G4862G5547G1722G2316
4When Christ, Who is our life, appears, then you also will appear with Him in [the splendor of His] glory.G3752G5547G2257G2222G5319G5119G5319G5210G2532G5319G4862G846G1722G1391
5So kill (deaden, deprive of power) the evil desire lurking in your members [those animal impulses and all that is earthly in you that is employed in sin]: sexual vice, impurity, sensual appetites, unholy desires, and all greed {and} covetousness, for that is idolatry (the deifying of self and other created things instead of God).G3499G3767G5216G3196G3588G1909G1093G4202G167G3806G2556G1939G2532G4124G3748G2076G1495
6It is on account of these [very sins] that the [holy] anger of God is ever coming upon the sons of disobedience (those who are obstinately opposed to the divine will),G1223G3739G3709G2316G2064G1909G5207G543
7Among whom you also once walked, when you were living in {and} addicted to [such practices].G1722G3739G5210G2532G4043G4218G3753G2198G1722G846
8But now put away {and} rid yourselves [completely] of all these things: anger, rage, bad feeling toward others, curses {and} slander, and foulmouthed abuse {and} shameful utterances from your lips!G1161G3570G5210G2532G659G3956G3709G2372G2549G988G148G1537G5216G4750
9Do not lie to one another, for you have stripped off the old (unregenerate) self with its evil practices,G5574G3361G1519G240G554G3820G444G4862G846G4234
10And have clothed yourselves with the new [spiritual self], which is [ever in the process of being] renewed {and} remolded into [fuller and more perfect knowledge upon] knowledge after the image (the likeness) of Him Who created it.G2532G1746G3501G3588G341G1519G1922G2596G1504G2936G846
11[In this new creation all distinctions vanish.] There is no room for {and} there can be neither Greek nor Jew, circumcised nor uncircumcised, [nor difference between nations whether alien] barbarians or Scythians [who are the most savage of all], nor slave or free man; but Christ is all and in all [everything and everywhere, to all men, without distinction of person].G3699G1762G3756G1672G2532G2453G4061G2532G203G915G4658G1401G1658G235G5547G3956G2532G1722G3956
12Clothe yourselves therefore, as God's own chosen ones (His own picked representatives), [who are] purified {and} holy and well-beloved [by God Himself, by putting on behavior marked by] tenderhearted pity {and} mercy, kind feeling, a lowly opinion of yourselves, gentle ways, [and] patience [which is tireless and long-suffering, and has the power to endure whatever comes, with good temper].G1746G3767G5613G1588G2316G40G2532G25G4698G3628G5544G5012G4236G3115
13Be gentle {and} forbearing with one another and, if one has a difference (a grievance or complaint) against another, readily pardoning each other; even as the Lord has [freely] forgiven you, so must you also [forgive].G430G240G2532G5483G1438G1437G5100G2192G3437G4314G5100G2531G2532G5547G5483G5213G3779G2532G5210
14And above all these [put on] love {and} enfold yourselves with the bond of perfectness [which binds everything together completely in ideal harmony].G1161G1909G3956G5125G26G3748G2076G4886G5047
15And let the peace (soul harmony which comes) from Christ rule (act as umpire continually) in your hearts [deciding and settling with finality all questions that arise in your minds, in that peaceful state] to which as [members of Christ's] one body you were also called [to live]. And be thankful (appreciative), [giving praise to God always].G2532G1018G1515G2316G1018G1722G5216G2588G1519G3739G2532G2564G1722G1520G4983G2532G1096G2170
16Let the word [spoken by] Christ (the Messiah) have its home [in your hearts and minds] {and} dwell in you in [all its] richness, as you teach and admonish {and} train one another in all insight {and} intelligence {and} wisdom [in spiritual things, and as you sing] psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, making melody to God with [His] grace in your hearts.G1774G3056G5547G1774G1722G5213G4146G1722G3956G4678G1321G2532G3560G1438G5568G2532G5215G2532G4152G5603G103G1722G5485G1722G5216G2588G2962
17And whatever you do [no matter what it is] in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus {and} in [dependence upon] His Person, giving praise to God the Father through Him.G2532G3748G3956G302G4160G1722G3056G2228G1722G2041G3956G1722G3686G2962G2424G2168G2316G2532G3962G1223G846

Family Relations

18Wives, be subject to your husbands [subordinate and adapt yourselves to them], as is right {and} fitting {and} your proper duty in the Lord.G1135G5293G2398G435G5613G433G1722G2962
19Husbands, love your wives [be affectionate and sympathetic with them] and do not be harsh {or} bitter {or} resentful toward them.G435G25G1135G2532G4087G3361G4087G4314G846
20Children, obey your parents in everything, for this is pleasing to the Lord.G5043G5219G1118G2596G3956G1063G5124G2076G2101G2962
21Fathers, do not provoke {or} irritate {or} fret your children [do not be hard on them or harass them], lest they become discouraged {and} sullen {and} morose {and} feel inferior {and} frustrated. [Do not break their spirit.]G3962G2042G3361G5216G5043G3363G120
22Servants, obey in everything those who are your earthly masters, not only when their eyes are on you as pleasers of men, but in simplicity of purpose [with all your heart] because of your reverence for the Lord {and} as a sincere expression of your devotion to Him.G1401G5219G2596G3956G2962G2596G4561G3361G1722G3787G5613G441G235G1722G572G2588G5399G2316
23Whatever may be your task, work at it heartily (from the soul), as [something done] for the Lord and not for men,G2532G3956G3748G1437G4160G2038G1537G5590G5613G2962G2532G3756G444
24Knowing [with all certainty] that it is from the Lord [and not from men] that you will receive the inheritance which is your [real] reward. [The One Whom] you are actually serving [is] the Lord Christ (the Messiah).G1492G3754G575G2962G618G469G2817G1063G1398G2962G5547
25For he who deals wrongfully will [reap the fruit of his folly and] be punished for his wrongdoing. And [with God] there is no partiality [no matter what a person's position may be, whether he is the slave or the master].G1161G91G2865G91G3739G91G2532G2076G3756G4382
