11In the first year of Darius the Mede, I stood up to strengthen and protect him.H259H8141H1867H4075H5977H2388H4581

Prophecies about Persia and Greece

2Now I will tell you the truth. "Three more kings will arise in Persia, and the fourth will be far richer than the others. By the power he gains through his riches, he will stir up everyone against the kingdom of Greece.H5046H571H5975H7969H4428H6539H7243H6239H6238H1419H2393H6239H5782H4438H3120
3Then a warrior king will arise; he will rule a vast realm and do whatever he wants.H1368H4428H5975H4910H7227H4474H6213H7522
4But as soon as he is established, his kingdom will be broken up and divided to the four winds of heaven, but not to his descendants; it will not be the same kingdom that he ruled, because his kingdom will be uprooted and will go to others besides them.H5975H4438H7665H2673H702H7307H8064H319H4915H4910H4438H5428H312

Kings of the South and the North

5"The king of the South will grow powerful, but one of his commanders will grow more powerful and will rule a kingdom greater than his.H4428H5045H2388H8269H2388H4910H4475H7227H4474
6After some years they will form an alliance, and the daughter of the king of the South will go to the king of the North to seal the agreement. She will not retain power, and his strength will not endure. She will be given up, together with her entourage, her father, and the one who supported her during those times.H7093H8141H2266H4428H1323H5045H935H4428H6828H6213H4339H6113H3581H2220H5975H2220H5414H935H3205H2388H6256
7In the place of the king of the South, one from her family will rise up, come against the army, and enter the fortress of the king of the North. He will take action against them and triumph.H5342H8328H5975H3653H935H2428H935H4581H4428H6828H6213H2388
8He will take even their gods captive to Egypt, with their metal images and their precious articles of silver and gold. For some years he will stay away from the king of the North,H935H7628H4714H430H5257H2532H3627H3701H2091H5975H8141H4428H6828
9who will enter the kingdom of the king of the South and then return to his own land.H4428H5045H935H4438H7725H127
10"His sons will mobilize for war and assemble a large number of armed forces. They will advance, sweeping through like a flood, and will again wage war as far as his fortress.H1121H1624H622H1995H7227H2428H935H935H7857H5674H7725H1624H4581
11Infuriated, the king of the South will march out to fight with the king of the North, who will raise a great multitude, but the multitude will be handed over to his enemy.H4428H5045H4843H3318H3898H4428H6828H5975H7227H1995H1995H5414H3027
12When the multitude is carried off, he will become arrogant and cause tens of thousands to fall, but he will not triumph.H5375H1995H3824H7311H7311H5307H7239H5810
13The king of the North will again raise a multitude larger than the first. After some years he will advance with a great army and many supplies.H4428H6828H7725H5975H1995H7227H7223H935H935H7093H6256H8141H1419H2428H7227H7399
14"In those times many will rise up against the king of the South. Violent ones among your own people will assert themselves to fulfill a vision, but they will fail.H6256H7227H5975H4428H5045H1121H6530H5971H5375H5975H2377H3782
15Then the king of the North will come, build up an assault ramp, and capture a well-fortified city. The forces of the South will not stand; even their select troops will not be able to resist.H4428H6828H935H8210H5550H3920H4013H5892H2220H5045H5975H4005H5971H3581H5975
16The king of the North who comes against him will do whatever he wants, and no one can oppose him. He will establish himself in the beautiful landwith total destruction in his hand.H935H6213H7522H5975H6440H5975H6643H776H3027H3617
17He will resolve to come with the force of his whole kingdom and will reach an agreement with him. He will give him a daughter in marriage to destroy it, but she will not stand with him or support him.H7760H6440H935H8633H4438H3477H6213H5414H1323H802H7843H5975
18Then he will turn his attention to the coasts and islands and capture many. But a commander will put an end to his taunting; instead, he will turn his taunts against him.H7760H7725H6440H339H3920H7227H7101H2781H7673H1115H2781H7725
19He will turn his attention back to the fortresses of his own land, but he will stumble, fall, and be no more.H7725H6440H4581H776H3782H5307H4672
20"In his place one will arise who will send out a tax collector for the glory of the kingdom; but within a few days he will be shattered, though not in anger or in battle.H5975H3653H5674H5065H1925H4438H259H3117H7665H639H4421
21"In his place a despised person will arise; royal honors will not be given to him, but he will come during a time of peaceand seize the kingdom by intrigue.H3653H5975H959H5414H1935H4438H935H7962H2388H4438H2519
22A flood of forces will be swept away before him; they will be shattered, as well as the covenant prince.H2220H7858H7857H6440H7665H5057H1285
23After an alliance is made with him, he will act deceitfully. He will rise to power with a small nation.H2266H6213H4820H5927H6105H4592H1471
24During a time of peace, he will come into the richest parts of the province and do what his fathers and predecessors never did. He will lavish plunder, loot, and wealth on his followers, and he will make plans against fortified cities, but only for a time.H935H7962H4924H4082H6213H1H6213H1H1H967H961H7998H7399H2803H4284H4013H6256
25"With a large army he will stir up his power and his courage against the king of the South. The king of the South will prepare for battle with an extremely large and powerful army, but he will not succeed, because plots will be made against him.H5782H3581H3824H4428H5045H1419H2428H4428H5045H1624H4421H3966H1419H6099H2428H5975H2803H4284
26Those who eat his provisions will destroy him; his army will be swept away, and many will fall slain.H398H6598H7665H2428H7857H7227H5307H2491
27The two kings, whose hearts are bent on evil, will speak lies at the same table but to no avail, for still the end will come at the appointed time.H8147H4428H3824H4827H7451H1696H3577H259H7979H6743H7093H4150
28The king of the North will return to his land with great wealth, but his heart will be set against the holy covenant; he will take action, then return to his own land.H7725H776H1419H7399H3824H6944H1285H6213H7725H776
29"At the appointed time he will come again to the South, but this time will not be like the first.H4150H7725H935H5045H7223H314
30Ships of Kittimwill come against him, and being intimidated, he will withdraw. Then he will rage against the holy covenant and take action. On his return, he will favor those who abandon the holy covenant.H6716H3794H935H3512H7725H2194H6944H1285H6213H7725H995H5800H6944H1285
31His forces will rise up and desecrate the temple fortress. They will abolish the daily sacrifice and set up the abomination of desolation.H2220H5975H2490H4720H4581H5493H8548H5414H8251H8074
32With flattery he will corrupt those who act wickedly toward the covenant, but the people who know their God will be strong and take action.H7561H1285H2610H2514H5971H3045H430H2388H6213
33Those who are wise among the people will give understanding to many, yet they will die by sword and flame, and be captured and plundered for a time.H7919H5971H995H7227H3782H2719H3852H7628H961H3117
34When defeated, they will be helped by some, but many others will join them insincerely.H3782H5826H4592H5828H7227H3867H2519
35Some of the wise will fall so that they may be refined, purified, and cleansed until the time of the end, for it will still come at the appointed time.H7919H3782H6884H1305H3835H6256H7093H4150
36"Then the king will do whatever he wants. He will exalt and magnify himself above every god, and he will say outrageous things against the God of gods. He will be successful until the time of wrath is completed, because what has been decreed will be accomplished.H4428H6213H7522H7311H1431H410H1696H6381H410H410H6743H2195H3615H2782H6213
37He will not show regard for the gods of his fathers, the god longed for by women, or for any other god, because he will magnify himself above all.H995H430H1H2532H802H995H433H1431
38Instead, he will honor a god of fortresses— a god his fathers did not know— with gold, silver, precious stones, and riches.H3653H3513H433H4581H433H1H3045H3513H2091H3701H3368H68H2532
39He will deal with the strongest fortresses with [the help of] a foreign god. He will greatly honor those who acknowledge him, making them rulers over many and distributing land as a reward.H6213H4581H4013H5236H433H5234H5234H7235H3519H4910H7227H2505H127H4242
40"At the time of the end, the king of the South will engage him in battle, but the king of the North will storm against him with chariots, horsemen, and many ships. He will invade countries and sweep through them like a flood.H6256H7093H4428H5045H5055H4428H6828H8175H7393H6571H7227H591H935H776H7857H5674
41He will also invade the beautiful land, and many will fall. But these will escape from his power: Edom, Moab, and the prominent people of the Ammonites.H935H6643H776H7227H3782H4422H3027H123H4124H7225H1121H5983
42He will extend his power against the countries, and not even the land of Egypt will escape.H7971H3027H776H776H4714H6413
43He will get control over the hidden treasures of gold and silver and over all the riches of Egypt. The Libyans and Cushites will also be in submission.H4910H4362H2091H3701H2532H4714H3864H3569H4703
44But reports from the east and the north will terrify him, and he will go out with great fury to destroy and annihilate many.H8052H4217H6828H926H3318H1419H2534H8045H2763H7227
45He will pitch his royal tents between the sea and the beautiful holy mountain, but he will meet his end with no one to help him.H5193H168H643H3220H6643H6944H2022H935H7093H5826
