The Wilderness Years

2"Then we turned and journeyed into the wilderness in the direction of the Red Sea, as the LORD told me. And for many days we traveled around Mount Seir.H6437H5265H4057H1870H5488H3220H3068H1696H5437H2022H8165H7227H3117 2Then the LORD said to me,H3068H559H559 3'You have been traveling around this mountain country long enough. Turn northwardH5437H2022H7227H6437H6828 4and command the people, "You are about to pass through the territory of your brothers, the people of Esau, who live in Seir; and they will be afraid of you. So be very careful.H6680H5971H559H5674H1366H251H1121H6215H3427H8165H3372H3966H8104 5Do not contend with them, for I will not give you any of their land, no, not so much as for the sole of the foot to tread on, because I have given Mount Seir to Esau as a possession.H1624H5414H776H7272H4096H3709H5414H2022H8165H6215H3425 6You shall purchase food from them for money, that you may eat, and you shall also buy water of them for money, that you may drink.H7666H400H3701H398H3739H4325H3701H8354 7For the LORD your God has blessed you in all the work of your hands. He knows your going through this great wilderness. These forty years the LORD your God has been with you. You have lacked nothing."'H3068H430H1288H4639H3027H3045H3212H1419H4057H705H8141H3068H430H2637H1697 8So we went on, away from our brothers, the people of Esau, who live in Seir, away from the Arabah road from Elath and Ezion-geber. "And we turned and went in the direction of the wilderness of Moab.H5674H251H1121H6215H3427H8165H1870H6160H359H6100H6437H5674H1870H4057H4124 9And the LORD said to me, 'Do not harass Moab or contend with them in battle, for I will not give you any of their land for a possession, because I have given Ar to the people of Lot for a possession.'H3068H559H6696H4124H1624H4421H5414H776H3425H5414H6144H1121H3876H3425 10(The Emim formerly lived there, a people great and many, and tall as the Anakim.H368H3427H6440H5971H1419H7227H7311H6062 11Like the Anakim they are also counted as Rephaim, but the Moabites call them Emim.H1992H2803H7497H6062H4125H7121H368 12The Horites also lived in Seir formerly, but the people of Esau dispossessed them and destroyed them from before them and settled in their place, as Israel did to the land of their possession, which the LORD gave to them.)H2752H3427H8165H6440H1121H6215H3423H8045H6440H3427H3478H6213H776H3425H3068H5414 13'Now rise up and go over the brook Zered.' So we went over the brook Zered.H6965H5674H5158H2218H5674H5158H2218 14And the time from our leaving Kadesh-barnea until we crossed the brook Zered was thirty-eight years, until the entire generation, that is, the men of war, had perished from the camp, as the LORD had sworn to them.H3117H1980H6947H5674H5158H2218H7970H8083H8141H1755H582H4421H8552H7130H4264H3068H7650 15For indeed the hand of the LORD was against them, to destroy them from the camp, until they had perished.H3027H3068H2000H7130H4264H8552 16"So as soon as all the men of war had perished and were dead from among the people,H582H4421H8552H4191H7130H5971 17the LORD said to me,H3068H1696H559 18'Today you are to cross the border of Moab at Ar.H5674H6144H1366H4124H3117 19And when you approach the territory of the people of Ammon, do not harass them or contend with them, for I will not give you any of the land of the people of Ammon as a possession, because I have given it to the sons of Lot for a possession.'H7126H4136H1121H5983H6696H1624H5414H776H1121H5983H3425H5414H1121H3876H3425 20(It is also counted as a land of Rephaim. Rephaim formerly lived there—but the Ammonites call them Zamzummim—H2803H776H7497H7497H3427H6440H5984H7121H2157 21a people great and many, and tall as the Anakim; but the LORD destroyed them before the Ammonites, and they dispossessed them and settled in their place,H5971H1419H7227H7311H6062H3068H8045H6440H3423H3427 22as he did for the people of Esau, who live in Seir, when he destroyed the Horites before them and they dispossessed them and settled in their place even to this day.H6213H1121H6215H3427H8165H8045H2752H6440H3423H3427H3117 23As for the Avvim, who lived in villages as far as Gaza, the Caphtorim, who came from Caphtor, destroyed them and settled in their place.)H5761H3427H2699H5804H3732H3318H3731H8045H3427 24'Rise up, set out on your journey and go over the Valley of the Arnon. Behold, I have given into your hand Sihon the Amorite, king of Heshbon, and his land. Begin to take possession, and contend with him in battle.H6965H5265H5674H5158H769H7200H5414H3027H5511H567H4428H2809H776H2490H3423H1624H4421 25This day I will begin to put the dread and fear of you on the peoples who are under the whole heaven, who shall hear the report of you and shall tremble and be in anguish because of you.'H3117H2490H5414H6343H3374H6440H5971H8064H8085H8088H7264H2342H6440

The Defeat of King Sihon

26"So I sent messengers from the wilderness of Kedemoth to Sihon the king of Heshbon, with words of peace, saying,H7971H4397H4057H6932H5511H4428H2809H1697H7965H559 27'Let me pass through your land. I will go only by the road; I will turn aside neither to the right nor to the left.H5674H776H3212H1870H1870H5493H3225H8040 28You shall sell me food for money, that I may eat, and give me water for money, that I may drink. Only let me pass through on foot,H7666H400H3701H398H5414H4325H3701H8354H5674H7272 29as the sons of Esau who live in Seir and the Moabites who live in Ar did for me, until I go over the Jordan into the land that the LORD our God is giving to us.'H1121H6215H3427H8165H4125H3427H6144H6213H5674H3383H776H3068H430H5414 30But Sihon the king of Heshbon would not let us pass by him, for the LORD your God hardened his spirit and made his heart obstinate, that he might give him into your hand, as he is this day.H5511H4428H2809H14H5674H3068H430H7185H7307H3824H553H5414H3027H3117 31And the LORD said to me, 'Behold, I have begun to give Sihon and his land over to you. Begin to take possession, that you may occupy his land.'H3068H559H7200H2490H5414H5511H776H6440H2490H3423H3423H776 32Then Sihon came out against us, he and all his people, to battle at Jahaz.H5511H3318H7125H5971H4421H3096 33And the LORD our God gave him over to us, and we defeated him and his sons and all his people.H3068H430H5414H6440H5221H1121H5971 34And we captured all his cities at that time and devoted to destruction every city, men, women, and children. We left no survivors.H3920H5892H6256H2763H4962H802H2945H5892H7604H8300 35Only the livestock we took as spoil for ourselves, with the plunder of the cities that we captured.H929H962H7998H5892H3920 36From Aroer, which is on the edge of the Valley of the Arnon, and from the city that is in the valley, as far as Gilead, there was not a city too high for us. The LORD our God gave all into our hands.H6177H8193H5158H769H5892H5158H1568H7151H7682H3068H430H5414H6440 37Only to the land of the sons of Ammon you did not draw near, that is, to all the banks of the river Jabbok and the cities of the hill country, whatever the LORD our God had forbidden us.H776H1121H5983H7126H3027H5158H2999H5892H2022H3068H430H6680
