A Little Foolishness

10DEAD FLIES cause the ointment of the perfumer to putrefy [and] send forth a vile odor; so does a little folly [in him who is valued for wisdom] outweigh wisdom and honor.H4194H2070H8081H7543H5042H887H4592H5531H3368H2451H3519 2A wise man's heart turns him toward his right hand, but a fool's heart toward his left.H2450H3820H3225H3684H3820H8040 3Even when he who is a fool walks along the road, his heart {and} understanding fail him, and he says of everyone {and} to everyone that he is a fool.H5530H1980H1870H3820H2638H559H5530 4If the temper of the ruler rises up against you, do not leave your place [or show a resisting spirit]; for gentleness {and} calmness prevent {or} put a stop to great offenses.H7307H4910H5927H3240H4725H4832H3240H1419H2399 5There is an evil which I have seen under the sun, like an error which proceeds from the ruler:H3426H7451H7200H8121H7684H3318H6440H7989 6Folly is set in great dignity {and} in high places, and the rich sit in low places.H5529H5414H7227H4791H6223H3427H8216 7I have seen slaves on horses, and princes walking like slaves on the earth.H7200H5650H5483H8269H1980H5650H776 8He who digs a pit [for others] will fall into it, and whoever breaks through a fence {or} a [stone] wall, a serpent will bite him.H2658H1475H5307H6555H1447H5175H5391 9Whoever removes [landmark] stones {or} hews out [new ones with similar intent] will be hurt with them, {and} he who fells trees will be endangered by them.H5265H68H6087H1234H6086H5533 10If the ax is dull and the man does not whet the edge, he must put forth more strength; but wisdom helps him to succeed.H1270H6949H7043H6440H1396H2428H2451H3504H3787 11If the serpent bites before it is charmed, then it is no use to call a charmer [and the slanderer is no better than the uncharmed snake].H5175H5391H3908H3956H1167H3504 12The words of a wise man's mouth are gracious {and} win him favor, but the lips of a fool consume him.H1697H2450H6310H2580H8193H3684H1104 13The beginning of the words of his mouth is foolishness, and the end of his talk is wicked madness.H8462H1697H6310H5531H319H6310H7451H1948 14A fool also multiplies words, though no man can tell what will be--and what will happen after he is gone, who can tell him?H5530H7235H1697H120H3045H310H5046 15The labor of fools wearies every one of them, because [he is so ignorant of the ordinary matters that] he does not even know how to get to town.H5999H3684H3021H3045H3212H5892 16Woe to you, O land, when your king is a child {or} a servant and when your officials feast in the morning!H337H776H4428H5288H8269H398H1242 17Happy (fortunate and to be envied) are you, O land, when your king is a free man {and} of noble birth {and} character and when your officials feast at the proper time--for strength and not for drunkenness!H835H776H4428H1121H2715H8269H398H6256H1369H8358 18Through indolence the rafters [of state affairs] decay {and} the roof sinks in, and through idleness of the hands the house leaks.H6103H4746H4355H8220H3027H1004H1811 19[Instead of repairing the breaches, the officials] make a feast for laughter, serve wine to cheer life, and [depend on tax] money to answer for all of it.H3899H6213H7814H3196H8055H2416H3701H6030 20Curse not the king, no, not even in your thoughts, and curse not the rich in your bedchamber, for a bird of the air will carry the voice, and a winged creature will tell the matter.H7043H4428H4093H7043H6223H2315H4904H5775H8064H3212H6963H1167H3671H5046H1697
