The First Passover Instituted

12The LORD said to Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt:H3068H559H4872H175H776H4714H559 2This month shall mark for you the beginning of months; it shall be the first month of the year for you.H2320H7218H2320H7223H2320H8141 3Tell the whole congregation of Israel that on the tenth of this month they are to take a lamb for each family, a lamb for each household.H1696H5712H3478H559H6218H2320H3947H376H7716H1004H1H7716H1004 4If a household is too small for a whole lamb, it shall join its closest neighbor in obtaining one; the lamb shall be divided in proportion to the number of people who eat of it.H1004H1961H4591H7716H7934H7138H1004H3947H4373H5315H376H6310H400H3699H7716 5Your lamb shall be without blemish, a year-old male; you may take it from the sheep or from the goats.H7716H8549H2145H1121H8141H3947H3532H5795 6You shall keep it until the fourteenth day of this month; then the whole assembled congregation of Israel shall slaughter it at twilight.H4931H702H6240H3117H2320H3605H6951H5712H3478H7819H996H6153 7They shall take some of the blood and put it on the two doorposts and the lintel of the houses in which they eat it.H3947H1818H5414H8147H4201H4947H1004H398 8They shall eat the lamb that same night; they shall eat it roasted over the fire with unleavened bread and bitter herbs.H398H1320H3915H6748H784H4682H4844H398 9Do not eat any of it raw or boiled in water, but roasted over the fire, with its head, legs, and inner organs.H398H4995H1310H1311H4325H6748H784H7218H3767H7130 10You shall let none of it remain until the morning; anything that remains until the morning you shall burn.H3498H1242H3498H1242H8313H784 11This is how you shall eat it: your loins girded, your sandals on your feet, and your staff in your hand; and you shall eat it hurriedly. It is the passover of the LORD.H3602H398H4975H2296H5275H7272H4731H3027H398H2649H3068H6453 12For I will pass through the land of Egypt that night, and I will strike down every firstborn in the land of Egypt, both human beings and animals; on all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgments: I am the LORD.H5674H776H4714H3915H5221H1060H776H4714H120H929H430H4714H6213H8201H3068 13The blood shall be a sign for you on the houses where you live: when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and no plague shall destroy you when I strike the land of Egypt.H1818H226H1004H7200H1818H6452H5063H4889H5221H776H4714 14This day shall be a day of remembrance for you. You shall celebrate it as a festival to the LORD; throughout your generations you shall observe it as a perpetual ordinance.H3117H2146H2287H2282H3068H1755H2287H2708H5769 15Seven days you shall eat unleavened bread; on the first day you shall remove leaven from your houses, for whoever eats leavened bread from the first day until the seventh day shall be cut off from Israel.H7651H3117H398H4682H389H7223H3117H7673H7603H1004H398H2557H7223H3117H7637H3117H5315H3772H3478 16On the first day you shall hold a solemn assembly, and on the seventh day a solemn assembly; no work shall be done on those days; only what everyone must eat, that alone may be prepared by you.H7223H3117H6944H4744H7637H3117H6944H4744H4399H6213H389H5315H398H6213 17You shall observe the festival of unleavened bread, for on this very day I brought your companies out of the land of Egypt: you shall observe this day throughout your generations as a perpetual ordinance.H8104H4682H6106H3117H3318H6635H776H4714H8104H3117H1755H2708H5769 18In the first month, from the evening of the fourteenth day until the evening of the twenty-first day, you shall eat unleavened bread.H7223H6240H702H3117H2320H6153H398H4682H259H6242H3117H2320H6153 19For seven days no leaven shall be found in your houses; for whoever eats what is leavened shall be cut off from the congregation of Israel, whether an alien or a native of the land.H7651H3117H7603H4672H1004H398H2556H5315H3772H5712H3478H1616H249H776 20You shall eat nothing leavened; in all your settlements you shall eat unleavened bread.H398H2556H4186H398H4682 21Then Moses called all the elders of Israel and said to them, "Go, select lambs for your families, and slaughter the passover lamb.H4872H7121H2205H3478H559H4900H3947H6629H4940H7819H6453 22Take a bunch of hyssop, dip it in the blood that is in the basin, and touch the lintel and the two doorposts with the blood in the basin. None of you shall go outside the door of your house until morning.H3947H92H231H2881H1818H5592H5060H4947H8147H4201H1818H5592H376H3318H6607H1004H1242 23For the LORD will pass through to strike down the Egyptians; when he sees the blood on the lintel and on the two doorposts, the LORD will pass over that door and will not allow the destroyer to enter your houses to strike you down.H3068H5674H5062H4714H7200H1818H4947H8147H4201H3068H6452H6607H5414H7843H935H1004H5062 24You shall observe this rite as a perpetual ordinance for you and your children.H8104H1697H2706H1121H5704H5769 25When you come to the land that the LORD will give you, as he has promised, you shall keep this observance.H935H776H3068H5414H1696H8104H5656 26And when your children ask you, 'What do you mean by this observance?'H1121H559H5656 27you shall say, 'It is the passover sacrifice to the LORD, for he passed over the houses of the Israelites in Egypt, when he struck down the Egyptians but spared our houses.'" And the people bowed down and worshiped.H559H2077H3068H6453H6452H1004H1121H3478H4714H5062H4714H5337H1004H5971H6915H7812 28The Israelites went and did just as the LORD had commanded Moses and Aaron.H1121H3478H3212H6213H3068H6680H4872H175H6213

The Tenth Plague: Death of the Firstborn

29At midnight the LORD struck down all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, from the firstborn of Pharaoh who sat on his throne to the firstborn of the prisoner who was in the dungeon, and all the firstborn of the livestock.H2677H3915H3068H5221H1060H776H4714H1060H6547H3427H3678H1060H7628H1004H953H1060H929 30Pharaoh arose in the night, he and all his officials and all the Egyptians; and there was a loud cry in Egypt, for there was not a house without someone dead.H6547H6965H3915H5650H4714H1419H6818H4714H1004H4191 31Then he summoned Moses and Aaron in the night, and said, "Rise up, go away from my people, both you and the Israelites! Go, worship the LORD, as you said.H7121H4872H175H3915H559H6965H3318H8432H5971H1121H3478H3212H5647H3068H1696 32Take your flocks and your herds, as you said, and be gone. And bring a blessing on me too!"H3947H6629H1241H1696H3212H1288

The Exodus: From Rameses to Succoth

33The Egyptians urged the people to hasten their departure from the land, for they said, "We shall all be dead."H4714H2388H5971H7971H776H4116H559H4191 34So the people took their dough before it was leavened, with their kneading bowls wrapped up in their cloaks on their shoulders.H5971H5375H1217H2556H4863H6887H8071H7926 35The Israelites had done as Moses told them; they had asked the Egyptians for jewelry of silver and gold, and for clothing,H1121H3478H6213H1697H4872H7592H4714H3627H3701H3627H2091H8071 36and the LORD had given the people favor in the sight of the Egyptians, so that they let them have what they asked. And so they plundered the Egyptians.H3068H5414H5971H2580H5869H4714H7592H5337H4714 37The Israelites journeyed from Rameses to Succoth, about six hundred thousand men on foot, besides children.H1121H3478H5265H7486H5523H8337H3967H505H7273H1397H905H2945 38A mixed crowd also went up with them, and livestock in great numbers, both flocks and herds.H6154H7227H5927H6629H1241H3966H3515H4735 39They baked unleavened cakes of the dough that they had brought out of Egypt; it was not leavened, because they were driven out of Egypt and could not wait, nor had they prepared any provisions for themselves.H644H4682H5692H1217H3318H4714H2556H1644H4714H3201H4102H6213H6720 40The time that the Israelites had lived in Egypt was four hundred thirty years.H4186H1121H3478H3427H4714H702H3967H8141H7970H8141 41At the end of four hundred thirty years, on that very day, all the companies of the LORD went out from the land of Egypt.H7093H702H3967H8141H7970H8141H6106H3117H6635H3068H3318H776H4714 42That was for the LORD a night of vigil, to bring them out of the land of Egypt. That same night is a vigil to be kept for the LORD by all the Israelites throughout their generations.H3915H8107H3068H3318H776H4714H3915H3068H8107H1121H3478H1755
