Consecration of the Firstborn

13The Lord spoke to Moses,H3068H1696H4872H559
2"Consecrate to me every firstborn male. Whatever is the first to open the womb among the Israelites, both of humans and of animals, belongs to me."H6942H1060H6363H7358H1121H3478H120H929
2Exod 13:21The Lord went in front of them by day in a pillar of cloud to lead them along the way, and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light, so they could travel both day and night.H6942H1060H6363H7358H1121H3478H120H929

The Festival of Unleavened Bread

3Then Moses said to the people, "Remember this day on which you came out of Egypt, from the house of bondage, because the Lord brought you out from this place with a strong show of force. Moreover, nothing leavened shall be eaten.H4872H559H5971H2142H2088H3117H3318H4714H1004H5650H2392H3027H3068H3318H2557H398
4Today, in the month of Abib, you are going out.H3117H3318H2320H24
5When the Lord brings you to the land of the Canaanite, the Hittite, the Amorite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite, which he swore to your ancestors to give you - a land flowing with milk and honey - you are to observe this ritual in this month.H3068H935H776H3669H2850H567H2340H2983H7650H1H5414H776H2100H2461H1706H5647H5656H2320
6You are to eat unleavened bread for seven days, and on the seventh day there shall be a festival to the Lord.H7651H3117H398H4682H7637H3117H2282H3068
7Unleavened bread shall be eaten for seven days, and nothing leavened shall be seen among you, nor is leaven to be seen among you throughout your territory.H4682H398H7651H3117H2557H7200H7603H7200H1366
8And you are to tell your child on that day, 'This is because of what the Lord did for me when I came out of Egypt.'H5046H1121H3117H559H5668H2088H3068H6213H3318H4714
9It shall be a sign for you on your hand and a reminder on your forehead, so that you may speak about the instruction of the Lord; for the Lord brought you out of Egypt with a strong show of force.H226H3027H2146H5869H3068H8451H6310H2389H3027H3068H3318H4714
10You are to keep this ordinance at its appointed time from year to year."8H8104H2708H4150H3117H3117

The Redemption of the Firstborn

11"When the Lord brings you to the land of the Canaanite and gives it to you, just as he promised you and your ancestors,H3068H935H776H3669H7650H1H5414
12you are to dedicate to the Lord everything that first opens the womb. All the firstborn males of your livestock belong to the Lord.H5674H3068H6363H7358H6363H7698H929H2145H3068
13You are to redeem every firstborn donkey with a lamb, and if you don't redeem it, you are to break its neck. You are to redeem every firstborn among your sons.H6363H2543H6299H7716H6299H6202H1060H120H1121H6299
14"Then when your child asks you in the future, 'What is this?', you are to say to him, 'The Lord brought us out of Egypt, from the house of bondage with a strong show of force.H1121H7592H4279H559H559H2392H3027H3068H3318H4714H1004H5650
15And when Pharaoh stubbornly refused to let us go, the Lord killed every firstborn in the land of Egypt, from the firstborn of humans to the firstborn of animals. Therefore, I sacrifice to the Lord every male that first opens the womb, but I redeem every firstborn of my sons.'H6547H7185H7971H3068H2026H1060H776H4714H1060H120H1060H929H2076H3068H6363H7358H2145H1060H1121H6299
16It shall be a sign on your hand and an emblem on your forehead, because the Lord brought us out of Egypt with a strong show of force."H226H3027H2903H5869H2392H3027H3068H3318H4714

God Guides the People in the Desert

17When Pharaoh let the people go, God did not lead them along the road through the land of the Philistines, even though it was nearer, because God had said, "If the people face war, they may change their minds and return to Egypt."H6547H5971H7971H430H5148H1870H776H6430H3588H7138H430H559H5971H5162H7200H4421H7725H4714
18So God led the people the round about way of the desert toward the Reed Sea. The Israelites went up from the land of Egypt in military formation.H430H5437H5971H5437H1870H4057H5488H3220H1121H3478H5927H2571H776H4714
19Moses took the bones of Joseph with him, because Joseph had made the Israelites take this solemn oath: "God will certainly take notice of you, and then you must carry my bones up with you from here."H4872H3947H6106H3130H7650H7650H1121H3478H559H430H6485H6485H5927H6106H5927
20They left Succoth and camped in Etham at the edge of the desert.H5265H5523H2583H864H7097H4057
22Neither the pillar of cloud by day nor the pillar of fire by night left its place in front of the people.H4185H5982H6051H3119H5982H784H3915H6440H5971
