Consecration of the Firstborn

13The LORD said to Moses,H3068H1696H4872H559 2"Consecrate to me every firstborn male. The first offspring of every womb among the Israelites belongs to me, whether man or animal."H6942H1060H6363H7358H1121H3478H120H929 3Then Moses said to the people, "Commemorate this day, the day you came out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery, because the LORD brought you out of it with a mighty hand. Eat nothing containing yeast.H4872H559H5971H2142H2088H3117H3318H4714H1004H5650H2392H3027H3068H3318H2557H398 4Today, in the month of Abib, you are leaving.H3117H3318H2320H24 5When the LORD brings you into the land of the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Hivites and Jebusites—the land he swore to your forefathers to give you, a land flowing with milk and honey—you are to observe this ceremony in this month:H3068H935H776H3669H2850H567H2340H2983H7650H1H5414H776H2100H2461H1706H5647H5656H2320 6For seven days eat bread made without yeast and on the seventh day hold a festival to the LORD.H7651H3117H398H4682H7637H3117H2282H3068 7Eat unleavened bread during those seven days; nothing with yeast in it is to be seen among you, nor shall any yeast be seen anywhere within your borders.H4682H398H7651H3117H2557H7200H7603H7200H1366 8On that day tell your son, 'I do this because of what the LORD did for me when I came out of Egypt.'H5046H1121H3117H559H5668H2088H3068H6213H3318H4714 9This observance will be for you like a sign on your hand and a reminder on your forehead that the law of the LORD is to be on your lips. For the LORD brought you out of Egypt with his mighty hand.H226H3027H2146H5869H3068H8451H6310H2389H3027H3068H3318H4714 10You must keep this ordinance at the appointed time year after year.H8104H2708H4150H3117H3117 11"After the LORD brings you into the land of the Canaanites and gives it to you, as he promised on oath to you and your forefathers,H3068H935H776H3669H7650H1H5414 12you are to give over to the LORD the first offspring of every womb. All the firstborn males of your livestock belong to the LORD.H5674H3068H6363H7358H6363H7698H929H2145H3068 13Redeem with a lamb every firstborn donkey, but if you do not redeem it, break its neck. Redeem every firstborn among your sons.H6363H2543H6299H7716H6299H6202H1060H120H1121H6299 14"In days to come, when your son asks you, 'What does this mean?' say to him, 'With a mighty hand the LORD brought us out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.H1121H7592H4279H559H559H2392H3027H3068H3318H4714H1004H5650 15When Pharaoh stubbornly refused to let us go, the LORD killed every firstborn in Egypt, both man and animal. This is why I sacrifice to the LORD the first male offspring of every womb and redeem each of my firstborn sons.'H6547H7185H7971H3068H2026H1060H776H4714H1060H120H1060H929H2076H3068H6363H7358H2145H1060H1121H6299 16And it will be like a sign on your hand and a symbol on your forehead that the LORD brought us out of Egypt with his mighty hand."H226H3027H2903H5869H2392H3027H3068H3318H4714

Crossing the Sea

17When Pharaoh let the people go, God did not lead them on the road through the Philistine country, though that was shorter. For God said, "If they face war, they might change their minds and return to Egypt."H6547H5971H7971H430H5148H1870H776H6430H3588H7138H430H559H5971H5162H7200H4421H7725H4714 18So God led the people around by the desert road toward the Red Sea. The Israelites went up out of Egypt armed for battle.H430H5437H5971H5437H1870H4057H5488H3220H1121H3478H5927H2571H776H4714 19Moses took the bones of Joseph with him because Joseph had made the sons of Israel swear an oath. He had said, "God will surely come to your aid, and then you must carry my bones up with you from this place."H4872H3947H6106H3130H7650H7650H1121H3478H559H430H6485H6485H5927H6106H5927 20After leaving Succoth they camped at Etham on the edge of the desert.H5265H5523H2583H864H7097H4057 21By day the LORD went ahead of them in a pillar of cloud to guide them on their way and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light, so that they could travel by day or night.H3068H1980H6440H3119H5982H6051H5148H1870H3915H5982H784H215H3212H3119H3915 22Neither the pillar of cloud by day nor the pillar of fire by night left its place in front of the people.H4185H5982H6051H3119H5982H784H3915H6440H5971
