The Depravity of Sodom

19The two angels came to Sodom in the evening, and Lot was sitting in the gateway of Sodom. When Lot saw them, he rose to meet them, and bowed down with his face to the ground.H935H8147H4397H5467H6153H3876H3427H8179H5467H3876H7200H6965H7125H7812H639H776
2He said, "Please, my lords, turn aside to your servant's house and spend the night, and wash your feet; then you can rise early and go on your way." They said, "No; we will spend the night in the square."H559H113H5493H5650H1004H3885H7364H7272H7925H1980H1870H559H3885H7339H3885
3But he urged them strongly; so they turned aside to him and entered his house; and he made them a feast, and baked unleavened bread, and they ate.H6484H3966H5493H935H1004H6213H4960H644H4682H398
4But before they lay down, the men of the city, the men of Sodom, both young and old, all the people to the last man, surrounded the house;H7901H582H5892H582H5467H5437H1004H5437H2205H5288H5971H7097
5and they called to Lot, "Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us, so that we may know them."H7121H3876H559H582H935H3915H3318H3045
6Lot went out of the door to the men, shut the door after him,H3876H3318H6607H5462H1817H310
7and said, "I beg you, my brothers, do not act so wickedly.H559H251H7489
8Look, I have two daughters who have not known a man; let me bring them out to you, and do to them as you please; only do nothing to these men, for they have come under the shelter of my roof."H8147H1323H3045H376H3318H6213H2896H5869H411H582H6213H408H1697H935H6738H6982
9But they replied, "Stand back!" And they said, "This fellow came here as an alien, and he would play the judge! Now we will deal worse with you than with them." Then they pressed hard against the man Lot, and came near the door to break it down.H559H5066H1973H559H259H935H1481H8199H8199H7489H6484H3966H376H3876H5066H7665H1817
10But the men inside reached out their hands and brought Lot into the house with them, and shut the door.H582H7971H3027H935H3876H1004H5462H1817
11And they struck with blindness the men who were at the door of the house, both small and great, so that they were unable to find the door.H5221H582H6607H1004H5575H6996H1419H3811H4672H6607

Sodom and Gomorrah Destroyed

12Then the men said to Lot, "Have you anyone else here? Sons-in-law, sons, daughters, or anyone you have in the city—bring them out of the place.H582H559H3876H6311H4310H2860H1121H1323H834H5892H3318H4725
13For we are about to destroy this place, because the outcry against its people has become great before the LORD, and the LORD has sent us to destroy it."H587H7843H853H4725H6818H1431H854H6440H3068H3068H7971H7843
14So Lot went out and said to his sons-in-law, who were to marry his daughters, "Up, get out of this place; for the LORD is about to destroy the city." But he seemed to his sons-in-law to be jesting.H3876H3318H1696H2860H3947H1323H559H6965H3318H4725H3068H7843H5892H6711H5869H2860
15When morning dawned, the angels urged Lot, saying, "Get up, take your wife and your two daughters who are here, or else you will be consumed in the punishment of the city."H3644H7837H5927H4397H213H3876H559H6965H3947H802H8147H1323H4672H5595H5771H5892
16But he lingered; so the men seized him and his wife and his two daughters by the hand, the LORD being merciful to him, and they brought him out and left him outside the city.H4102H582H2388H3027H3027H802H3027H8147H1323H3068H2551H3318H3240H2351H5892
17When they had brought them outside, they said, "Flee for your life; do not look back or stop anywhere in the Plain; flee to the hills, or else you will be consumed."H3318H2351H559H4422H5921H5315H5027H310H5975H3603H4422H2022H5595
18And Lot said to them, "Oh, no, my lords;H3876H559H113
19your servant has found favor with you, and you have shown me great kindness in saving my life; but I cannot flee to the hills, for fear the disaster will overtake me and I die.H5650H4672H2580H5869H1431H2617H6213H5978H2421H5315H3201H4422H2022H7451H1692H4191
20Look, that city is near enough to flee to, and it is a little one. Let me escape there—is it not a little one?—and my life will be saved!"H5892H7138H5127H1931H4705H4422H4705H5315H2421
21He said to him, "Very well, I grant you this favor too, and will not overthrow the city of which you have spoken.H559H2009H5375H6440H1697H2015H5892H834H1696
22Hurry, escape there, for I can do nothing until you arrive there." Therefore the city was called Zoar.H4116H4422H3201H6213H1697H935H8034H5892H7121H6820
23The sun had risen on the earth when Lot came to Zoar.H8121H3318H776H3876H935H6820
24Then the LORD rained on Sodom and Gomorrah sulfur and fire from the LORD out of heaven;H3068H4305H5467H6017H1614H784H3068H8064
25and he overthrew those cities, and all the Plain, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and what grew on the ground.H2015H411H5892H3603H3427H5892H6780H127
26But Lot's wife, behind him, looked back, and she became a pillar of salt.H802H5027H310H5333H4417
27Abraham went early in the morning to the place where he had stood before the LORD;H85H7925H1242H4725H5975H6440H3068
28and he looked down toward Sodom and Gomorrah and toward all the land of the Plain and saw the smoke of the land going up like the smoke of a furnace.H8259H6440H5467H6017H6440H776H3603H7200H7008H776H5927H7008H3536
29So it was that, when God destroyed the cities of the Plain, God remembered Abraham, and sent Lot out of the midst of the overthrow, when he overthrew the cities in which Lot had settled.H430H7843H5892H3603H430H2142H85H7971H3876H8432H2018H2015H5892H2004H3876H3427

The Shameful Origin of Moab and Ammon

30Now Lot went up out of Zoar and settled in the hills with his two daughters, for he was afraid to stay in Zoar; so he lived in a cave with his two daughters.H3876H5927H6820H3427H2022H8147H1323H3372H3427H6820H3427H4631H8147H1323
31And the firstborn said to the younger, "Our father is old, and there is not a man on earth to come in to us after the manner of all the world.H1067H559H6810H1H2204H376H776H935H1870H776
32Come, let us make our father drink wine, and we will lie with him, so that we may preserve offspring through our father."H3212H8248H1H8248H3196H7901H2421H2233H1
33So they made their father drink wine that night; and the firstborn went in, and lay with her father; he did not know when she lay down or when she rose.H8248H1H8248H3196H3915H1067H935H7901H1H3045H7901H6965
34On the next day, the firstborn said to the younger, "Look, I lay last night with my father; let us make him drink wine tonight also; then you go in and lie with him, so that we may preserve offspring through our father."H4283H1067H559H6810H7901H570H1H8248H3196H3915H935H7901H2421H2233H1
35So they made their father drink wine that night also; and the younger rose, and lay with him; and he did not know when she lay down or when she rose.H8248H1H8248H3196H1931H3915H6810H6965H7901H3045H7901H6965
36Thus both the daughters of Lot became pregnant by their father.H8147H1323H3876H2029H1
37The firstborn bore a son, and named him Moab; he is the ancestor of the Moabites to this day.H1067H3205H1121H7121H8034H4124H1931H1H4124H3117
38The younger also bore a son and named him Ben-ammi; he is the ancestor of the Ammonites to this day.H6810H3205H1121H7121H8034H1151H1H1121H5983H3117
