Sodom’s Depravity

19The two angels entered Sodom at sunset while Lot was sitting in the gate area of Sodom. When Lot saw them, he got up, greeted them, bowed low with his face to the ground,H935H8147H4397H5467H6153H3876H3427H8179H5467H3876H7200H6965H7125H7812H639H776 2and said, "Look my lords, please turn aside to your servant's house, wash your feet, and spend the night. Then you can get up early and be on your way."1But they responded, "No, we would rather spend the night in the town square."H559H113H5493H5650H1004H3885H7364H7272H7925H1980H1870H559H3885H7339H3885 3But Lot kept urging them strongly, so they turned aside and entered his house. He prepared a feast and baked unleavened flat bread for them, and they ate.H6484H3966H5493H935H1004H6213H4960H644H4682H398 4Before they could lay down, all the men of the city and its outskirts (that is, of Sodom), both young and old, surrounded the house.H7901H582H5892H582H5467H5437H1004H5437H2205H5288H5971H7097 5They called out to Lot and asked him, "Where are the men who came to you tonight - Bring them out to us so we can have sex with them!"H7121H3876H559H582H935H3915H3318H3045 6Lot went outside the entrance to them, shut the door behind him,H3876H3318H6607H5462H1817H310 7and said, "I urge you, my brothers, don't do such a wicked thing.H559H251H7489 8Look here, I have two daughters who are virgins. Let me bring them out to you, and you may do to them whatever you wish, only don't do anything to these men, because they're here under my protection."H8147H1323H3045H376H3318H6213H2896H5869H411H582H6213H408H1697H935H6738H6982 9But they replied, "Get out of our way! This fellow came here as an alien, and now he's acting like a judge! So we're going to deal more harshly with you than with them." Then they pushed hard against the man (that is, against Lot), intending to break down the door.H559H5066H1973H559H259H935H1481H8199H8199H7489H6484H3966H376H3876H5066H7665H1817 10But the angels inside reached out, dragged Lot into the house with them, shut the door,H582H7971H3027H935H3876H1004H5462H1817 11and struck the men who were at the entrance of the house with blindness, from the least to the greatest, so they were unable to find the doorway.H5221H582H6607H1004H5575H6996H1419H3811H4672H6607

Lot Negotiates with the Angels

12The angels asked Lot, "Do you have anyone else here in the city - A son-in-law - Sons - Daughters - Get them out of this place,H582H559H3876H6311H4310H2860H1121H1323H834H5892H3318H4725 13because we're going to destroy it. The Lord knows how their behavior stinks, so he sent us here to destroy it!H587H7843H853H4725H6818H1431H854H6440H3068H3068H7971H7843 14Lot then went out and told his sons-in-law, who had married his daughters, "Get out of here! The Lord is going to destroy this city!" But his sons-in-law thought he was joking.H3876H3318H1696H2860H3947H1323H559H6965H3318H4725H3068H7843H5892H6711H5869H2860 15As dawn was breaking, the angels pressured Lot. "Get going!" they told him. "Take your wife and your two daughters who are here, or you will be engulfed by the punishment of the city."H3644H7837H5927H4397H213H3876H559H6965H3947H802H8147H1323H4672H5595H5771H5892 16But he lingered on in the city, so the men grabbed his hand and the hands of his wife and two daughters (because of the Lord's compassion for him!) and they brought them out of the city and left them outside.H4102H582H2388H3027H3027H802H3027H8147H1323H3068H2551H3318H3240H2351H5892 17After they had brought them outside, one of them said, "Flee for your lives! Don't look back or stop anywhere on the plain. Escape to the hills, or you will be swept away!"H3318H2351H559H4422H5921H5315H5027H310H5975H3603H4422H2022H5595 18"No, please, my lords!" Lot pleaded with them.H3876H559H113 19"Your servant has found favor in your sight, and you have shown me your gracious love in how you have dealt with me by keeping me alive. I cannot escape to the hills, because I'm afraid the disaster will overtake me, and I'll die.H5650H4672H2580H5869H1431H2617H6213H5978H2421H5315H3201H4422H2022H7451H1692H4191 20Look, there is a town nearby where I can flee, and it's a small one. Let me escape there! It's a small one, isn't it - That way I'll stay alive!"H5892H7138H5127H1931H4705H4422H4705H5315H2421 21"All right," he replied to Lot, "I'll agree with your request! I won't overthrow the town that you mentioned.H559H2009H5375H6440H1697H2015H5892H834H1696 22Hurry up and flee there, because I cannot do anything until you go there." Therefore the name of the town was called Zoar.H4116H4422H3201H6213H1697H935H8034H5892H7121H6820

Lot’s Wife Becomes a Pillar of Salt

23The sun had risen over the land about the time Lot reached Zoar.H8121H3318H776H3876H935H6820 24Then the Lord rained sulfur and fire out of the sky from the Lord on Sodom and Gomorrah,H3068H4305H5467H6017H1614H784H3068H8064 25overthrowing those cities, all of the plain, and everyone who lived in the cities. He also destroyed the plants that grew out of the ground.H2015H411H5892H3603H3427H5892H6780H127 26But Lot's wife looked back as she lingered behind him, and she became a pillar of salt.H802H5027H310H5333H4417 27Abraham went early in the morning to the place where he had stood before the Lord earlier.H85H7925H1242H4725H5975H6440H3068 28He looked off toward Sodom, Gomorrah, and the entire plain, and he saw smoke rising from the land like smoke from a furnace.H8259H6440H5467H6017H6440H776H3603H7200H7008H776H5927H7008H3536 29And so it was that, when God destroyed the cities of the plain, he remembered Abraham and brought Lot out from the midst of the destruction when he overthrew the cities where Lot had lived.19H430H7843H5892H3603H430H2142H85H7971H3876H8432H2018H2015H5892H2004H3876H3427

The Origin of Moab and Ammon

30Later on, Lot and his two daughters abandoned Zoar and settled in the hills because Lot was afraid to live in Zoar. He lived there in a cave, along with his two daughters.H3876H5927H6820H3427H2022H8147H1323H3372H3427H6820H3427H4631H8147H1323 31One day the firstborn said to the younger one, "Our father is old, and there's no man in the land to have sex with us, as everybody else throughout all the earth does.H1067H559H6810H1H2204H376H776H935H1870H776 32Come on! Let's make our father drink wine, and then we'll have sex with him so we can preserve our father's lineage."31H3212H8248H1H8248H3196H7901H2421H2233H1 33So they had their father drink wine that night, and the older one went in and had sexual relations with her father, but he was not aware when she lay down or when she arose.H8248H1H8248H3196H3915H1067H935H7901H1H3045H7901H6965 34The next day the firstborn said to the younger one, "Look! I had sex with my father last night. Let's make him drink wine tonight again as well. Then you go in and have sex with him, too. That way we'll preserve our father's lineage."19H4283H1067H559H6810H7901H570H1H8248H3196H3915H935H7901H2421H2233H1 35So they made their father drink wine that night as well, but he was not aware when she lay down or when she arose.H8248H1H8248H3196H1931H3915H6810H6965H7901H3045H7901H6965 36That's how both of Lot's daughters became pregnant by their father.H8147H1323H3876H2029H1 37The firstborn gave birth to a son and named him Moab, and he is the ancestor of the Moabites to this day.H1067H3205H1121H7121H8034H4124H1931H1H4124H3117 38The younger also gave birth to a son and named him Ben-ammi, and he is the ancestor of the Ammonites to this day.H6810H3205H1121H7121H8034H1151H1H1121H5983H3117
