Sodom and Gomorrah Destroyed

19The two angels arrived at Sodom in the evening, and Lot was sitting in the gateway of the city. When he saw them, he got up to meet them and bowed down with his face to the ground.H935H8147H4397H5467H6153H3876H3427H8179H5467H3876H7200H6965H7125H7812H639H776 2"My lords," he said, "please turn aside to your servant's house. You can wash your feet and spend the night and then go on your way early in the morning." "No," they answered, "we will spend the night in the square."H559H113H5493H5650H1004H3885H7364H7272H7925H1980H1870H559H3885H7339H3885 3But he insisted so strongly that they did go with him and entered his house. He prepared a meal for them, baking bread without yeast, and they ate.H6484H3966H5493H935H1004H6213H4960H644H4682H398 4Before they had gone to bed, all the men from every part of the city of Sodom—both young and old—surrounded the house.H7901H582H5892H582H5467H5437H1004H5437H2205H5288H5971H7097 5They called to Lot, "Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us so that we can have sex with them."H7121H3876H559H582H935H3915H3318H3045 6Lot went outside to meet them and shut the door behind himH3876H3318H6607H5462H1817H310 7and said, "No, my friends. Don't do this wicked thing.H559H251H7489 8Look, I have two daughters who have never slept with a man. Let me bring them out to you, and you can do what you like with them. But don't do anything to these men, for they have come under the protection of my roof."H8147H1323H3045H376H3318H6213H2896H5869H411H582H6213H408H1697H935H6738H6982 9"Get out of our way," they replied. And they said, "This fellow came here as an alien, and now he wants to play the judge! We'll treat you worse than them." They kept bringing pressure on Lot and moved forward to break down the door.H559H5066H1973H559H259H935H1481H8199H8199H7489H6484H3966H376H3876H5066H7665H1817 10But the men inside reached out and pulled Lot back into the house and shut the door.H582H7971H3027H935H3876H1004H5462H1817 11Then they struck the men who were at the door of the house, young and old, with blindness so that they could not find the door.H5221H582H6607H1004H5575H6996H1419H3811H4672H6607 12The two men said to Lot, "Do you have anyone else here—sons-in-law, sons or daughters, or anyone else in the city who belongs to you? Get them out of here,H582H559H3876H6311H4310H2860H1121H1323H834H5892H3318H4725 13because we are going to destroy this place. The outcry to the LORD against its people is so great that he has sent us to destroy it."H587H7843H853H4725H6818H1431H854H6440H3068H3068H7971H7843 14So Lot went out and spoke to his sons-in-law, who were pledged to marry his daughters. He said, "Hurry and get out of this place, because the LORD is about to destroy the city!" But his sons-in-law thought he was joking.H3876H3318H1696H2860H3947H1323H559H6965H3318H4725H3068H7843H5892H6711H5869H2860 15With the coming of dawn, the angels urged Lot, saying, "Hurry! Take your wife and your two daughters who are here, or you will be swept away when the city is punished."H3644H7837H5927H4397H213H3876H559H6965H3947H802H8147H1323H4672H5595H5771H5892 16When he hesitated, the men grasped his hand and the hands of his wife and of his two daughters and led them safely out of the city, for the LORD was merciful to them.H4102H582H2388H3027H3027H802H3027H8147H1323H3068H2551H3318H3240H2351H5892 17As soon as they had brought them out, one of them said, "Flee for your lives! Don't look back, and don't stop anywhere in the plain! Flee to the mountains or you will be swept away!"H3318H2351H559H4422H5921H5315H5027H310H5975H3603H4422H2022H5595 18But Lot said to them, "No, my lords, please!H3876H559H113 19Your servant has found favor in your eyes, and you have shown great kindness to me in sparing my life. But I can't flee to the mountains; this disaster will overtake me, and I'll die.H5650H4672H2580H5869H1431H2617H6213H5978H2421H5315H3201H4422H2022H7451H1692H4191 20Look, here is a town near enough to run to, and it is small. Let me flee to it—it is very small, isn't it? Then my life will be spared."H5892H7138H5127H1931H4705H4422H4705H5315H2421 21He said to him, "Very well, I will grant this request too; I will not overthrow the town you speak of.H559H2009H5375H6440H1697H2015H5892H834H1696 22But flee there quickly, because I cannot do anything until you reach it." (That is why the town was called Zoar.)H4116H4422H3201H6213H1697H935H8034H5892H7121H6820 23By the time Lot reached Zoar, the sun had risen over the land.H8121H3318H776H3876H935H6820 24Then the LORD rained down burning sulfur on Sodom and Gomorrah—from the LORD out of the heavens.H3068H4305H5467H6017H1614H784H3068H8064 25Thus he overthrew those cities and the entire plain, including all those living in the cities—and also the vegetation in the land.H2015H411H5892H3603H3427H5892H6780H127 26But Lot's wife looked back, and she became a pillar of salt.H802H5027H310H5333H4417 27Early the next morning Abraham got up and returned to the place where he had stood before the LORD.H85H7925H1242H4725H5975H6440H3068 28He looked down toward Sodom and Gomorrah, toward all the land of the plain, and he saw dense smoke rising from the land, like smoke from a furnace.H8259H6440H5467H6017H6440H776H3603H7200H7008H776H5927H7008H3536 29So when God destroyed the cities of the plain, he remembered Abraham, and he brought Lot out of the catastrophe that overthrew the cities where Lot had lived.H430H7843H5892H3603H430H2142H85H7971H3876H8432H2018H2015H5892H2004H3876H3427

Lot and His Daughters

30Lot and his two daughters left Zoar and settled in the mountains, for he was afraid to stay in Zoar. He and his two daughters lived in a cave.H3876H5927H6820H3427H2022H8147H1323H3372H3427H6820H3427H4631H8147H1323 31One day the older daughter said to the younger, "Our father is old, and there is no man around here to lie with us, as is the custom all over the earth.H1067H559H6810H1H2204H376H776H935H1870H776 32Let's get our father to drink wine and then lie with him and preserve our family line through our father."H3212H8248H1H8248H3196H7901H2421H2233H1 33That night they got their father to drink wine, and the older daughter went in and lay with him. He was not aware of it when she lay down or when she got up.H8248H1H8248H3196H3915H1067H935H7901H1H3045H7901H6965 34The next day the older daughter said to the younger, "Last night I lay with my father. Let's get him to drink wine again tonight, and you go in and lie with him so we can preserve our family line through our father."H4283H1067H559H6810H7901H570H1H8248H3196H3915H935H7901H2421H2233H1 35So they got their father to drink wine that night also, and the younger daughter went and lay with him. Again he was not aware of it when she lay down or when she got up.H8248H1H8248H3196H1931H3915H6810H6965H7901H3045H7901H6965 36So both of Lot's daughters became pregnant by their father.H8147H1323H3876H2029H1 37The older daughter had a son, and she named him Moab; he is the father of the Moabites of today.H1067H3205H1121H7121H8034H4124H1931H1H4124H3117 38The younger daughter also had a son, and she named him Ben-Ammi; he is the father of the Ammonites of today.H6810H3205H1121H7121H8034H1151H1H1121H5983H3117
