The Destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah

19The two angels entered Sodom in the evening as Lot was sitting at Sodom's gate. When Lot saw [them], he got up to meet them. He bowed [with his] face to the groundH935H8147H4397H5467H6153H3876H3427H8179H5467H3876H7200H6965H7125H7812H639H776 2and said, "My lords, turn aside to your servant's house, wash your feet, and spend the night. Then you can get up early and go on your way." "No," they said. "We would rather spend the night in the square."H559H113H5493H5650H1004H3885H7364H7272H7925H1980H1870H559H3885H7339H3885 3But he urged them so strongly that they followed him and went into his house. He prepared a feast and baked unleavened bread for them, and they ate.H6484H3966H5493H935H1004H6213H4960H644H4682H398 4Before they went to bed, the men of the city of Sodom, both young and old, the whole population, surrounded the house.H7901H582H5892H582H5467H5437H1004H5437H2205H5288H5971H7097 5They called out to Lot and said, "Where are the men who came to you tonight? Send them out to us so we can have sex with them!"H7121H3876H559H582H935H3915H3318H3045 6Lot went out to them at the entrance and shut the door behind him.H3876H3318H6607H5462H1817H310 7He said, "Don't do [this] evil, my brothers.H559H251H7489 8Look, I've got two daughters who haven't had sexual relations with a man. I'll bring them out to you, and you can do whatever you want to them. However, don't do anything to these men, because they have come under the protection of my roof."H8147H1323H3045H376H3318H6213H2896H5869H411H582H6213H408H1697H935H6738H6982 9"Get out of the way!" they said, adding, "This one came here as a foreigner, but he's acting like a judge! Now we'll do more harm to you than to them." They put pressure on Lot and came up to break down the door.H559H5066H1973H559H259H935H1481H8199H8199H7489H6484H3966H376H3876H5066H7665H1817 10But the angels reached out, brought Lot into the house with them, and shut the door.H582H7971H3027H935H3876H1004H5462H1817 11They struck the men who were at the door of the house, both young and old, with a blinding light so that they were unable to find the door.H5221H582H6607H1004H5575H6996H1419H3811H4672H6607 12Then the angels said to Lot, "Do you have anyone else here: a son-in-law, your sons and daughters, or anyone else in the city who belongs to you? Get them out of this place,H582H559H3876H6311H4310H2860H1121H1323H834H5892H3318H4725 13for we are about to destroy this place because the outcry against its people is great before the LORD, and the LORD has sent us to destroy it."H587H7843H853H4725H6818H1431H854H6440H3068H3068H7971H7843 14So Lot went out and spoke to his sons-in-law, who were going to marry his daughters. "Get up," he said. "Get out of this place, for the LORD is about to destroy the city!" But his sons-in-law thought he was joking.H3876H3318H1696H2860H3947H1323H559H6965H3318H4725H3068H7843H5892H6711H5869H2860 15At the crack of dawn the angels urged Lot on: "Get up! Take your wife and your two daughters who are here, or you will be swept away in the punishment of the city."H3644H7837H5927H4397H213H3876H559H6965H3947H802H8147H1323H4672H5595H5771H5892 16But he hesitated, so because of the LORD's compassion for him, the men grabbed his hand, his wife's hand, and the hands of his two daughters. And they brought him out and left him outside the city.H4102H582H2388H3027H3027H802H3027H8147H1323H3068H2551H3318H3240H2351H5892 17As soon as the angels got them outside, one of them said, "Run for your lives! Don't look back and don't stop anywhere on the plain! Run to the mountains, or you will be swept away!"H3318H2351H559H4422H5921H5315H5027H310H5975H3603H4422H2022H5595 18But Lot said to them, "No, Lord— please.H3876H559H113 19Your servant has indeed found favor in Your sight, and You have shown me great kindness by saving my life. But I can't run to the mountains; the disaster will overtake me, and I will die.H5650H4672H2580H5869H1431H2617H6213H5978H2421H5315H3201H4422H2022H7451H1692H4191 20Look, this town is close enough for me to run to. It is a small place. Please let me go there— it's only a small place, isn't it?— so that I can survive."H5892H7138H5127H1931H4705H4422H4705H5315H2421 21And he said to him, "All right, I'll grant your request about this matter too, and will not overthrow the town you mentioned.H559H2009H5375H6440H1697H2015H5892H834H1696 22Hurry up! Run there, for I cannot do anything until you get there." Therefore the name of the city is Zoar.H4116H4422H3201H6213H1697H935H8034H5892H7121H6820 23The sun had risen over the land when Lot reached Zoar.H8121H3318H776H3876H935H6820 24Then the LORD rained burning sulfur on Sodom and Gomorrah from the LORD out of the sky.H3068H4305H5467H6017H1614H784H3068H8064 25He overthrew these cities, the entire plain, all the inhabitants of the cities, and whatever grew on the ground.H2015H411H5892H3603H3427H5892H6780H127 26But his wife looked back and became a pillar of salt.H802H5027H310H5333H4417 27Early in the morning Abraham went to the place where he had stood before the LORD.H85H7925H1242H4725H5975H6440H3068 28He looked down toward Sodom and Gomorrah and all the land of the plain, and he saw that smoke was going up from the land like the smoke of a furnace.H8259H6440H5467H6017H6440H776H3603H7200H7008H776H5927H7008H3536 29So it was, when God destroyed the cities of the plain, He remembered Abraham and brought Lot out of the middle of the upheaval when He overthrew the cities where Lot had lived.H430H7843H5892H3603H430H2142H85H7971H3876H8432H2018H2015H5892H2004H3876H3427

The Origin of Moab and Ammon

30Lot departed from Zoar and lived in the mountains along with his two daughters, because he was afraid to live in Zoar. Instead, he and his two daughters lived in a cave.H3876H5927H6820H3427H2022H8147H1323H3372H3427H6820H3427H4631H8147H1323 31Then the firstborn said to the younger, "Our father is old, and there is no man in the land to sleep with us [as is] the custom of all the land.H1067H559H6810H1H2204H376H776H935H1870H776 32Come, let's get our father to drink wine so that we can sleep with him and preserve our father's line."H3212H8248H1H8248H3196H7901H2421H2233H1 33So they got their father to drink wine that night, and the firstborn came and slept with her father; he did not know when she lay down or when she got up.H8248H1H8248H3196H3915H1067H935H7901H1H3045H7901H6965 34The next day the firstborn said to the younger, "Look, I slept with my father last night. Let's get him to drink wine again tonight so you can go sleep with him and we can preserve our father's line."H4283H1067H559H6810H7901H570H1H8248H3196H3915H935H7901H2421H2233H1 35That night they again got their father to drink wine, and the younger went and slept with him; he did not know when she lay down or when she got up.H8248H1H8248H3196H1931H3915H6810H6965H7901H3045H7901H6965 36So both of Lot's daughters became pregnant by their father.H8147H1323H3876H2029H1 37The firstborn gave birth to a son and named him Moab. He is the father of the Moabites of today.H1067H3205H1121H7121H8034H4124H1931H1H4124H3117 38The younger also gave birth to a son, and she named him Ben-ammi. He is the father of the Ammonites of today.H6810H3205H1121H7121H8034H1151H1H1121H5983H3117
