Isaac and Abimelech

26There was a famine in the land, besides the first famine that was in the days of Abraham. And Isaac went to Abimelech king of the Philistines, in Gerar.H7458H776H905H7223H7458H3117H85H3327H3212H40H4428H6430H1642 2Then the LORD appeared to him and said: "Do not go down to Egypt; live in the land of which I shall tell you.H3068H7200H559H3381H4714H7931H776H559 3"Dwell in this land, and I will be with you and bless you; for to you and your descendants I give all these lands, and I will perform the oath which I swore to Abraham your father.H1481H776H1288H2233H5414H411H776H6965H7621H7650H85H1 4"And I will make your descendants multiply as the stars of heaven; I will give to your descendants all these lands; and in your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed;H7235H2233H7235H3556H8064H5414H2233H411H776H2233H1471H776H1288 5"because Abraham obeyed My voice and kept My charge, My commandments, My statutes, and My laws."H6118H85H8085H6963H8104H4931H4687H2708H8451 6So Isaac dwelt in Gerar.H3327H3427H1642 7And the men of the place asked about his wife. And he said, "She is my sister"; for he was afraid to say, "She is my wife," because he thought, "lest the men of the place kill me for Rebekah, because she is beautiful to behold."H582H4725H7592H802H559H269H3372H559H802H582H4725H2026H7259H2896H4758 8Now it came to pass, when he had been there a long time, that Abimelech king of the Philistines looked through a window, and saw, and there was Isaac, showing endearment to Rebekah his wife.H748H3117H40H4428H6430H8259H1157H2474H7200H3327H6711H7259H802 9Then Abimelech called Isaac and said, "Quite obviously she is your wife; so how could you say, 'She is my sister'?" And Isaac said to him, "Because I said, 'Lest I die on account of her.'"H40H7121H3327H559H389H802H559H269H3327H559H559H4191 10And Abimelech said, "What is this you have done to us? One of the people might soon have lain with your wife, and you would have brought guilt on us."H40H559H6213H259H5971H4592H7901H802H935H817 11So Abimelech charged all his people, saying, "He who touches this man or his wife shall surely be put to death."H40H6680H5971H559H5060H376H802H4191H4191 12Then Isaac sowed in that land, and reaped in the same year a hundredfold; and the LORD blessed him.H3327H2232H776H4672H8141H3967H8180H3068H1288 13The man began to prosper, and continued prospering until he became very prosperous;H376H1431H3212H1980H1432H1431H3966H1431 14for he had possessions of flocks and possessions of herds and a great number of servants. So the Philistines envied him.H4735H6629H4735H1241H7227H5657H6430H7065 15Now the Philistines had stopped up all the wells which his father's servants had dug in the days of Abraham his father, and they had filled them with earth.H875H1H5650H2658H3117H85H1H6430H5640H4390H6083 16And Abimelech said to Isaac, "Go away from us, for you are much mightier than we."H40H559H3327H3212H3966H6105 17Then Isaac departed from there and pitched his tent in the Valley of Gerar, and dwelt there.H3327H3212H2583H5158H1642H3427H8033 18And Isaac dug again the wells of water which they had dug in the days of Abraham his father, for the Philistines had stopped them up after the death of Abraham. He called them by the names which his father had called them.H3327H2658H7725H875H4325H2658H3117H85H1H6430H5640H310H4194H85H7121H8034H8034H834H1H7121 19Also Isaac's servants dug in the valley, and found a well of running water there.H3327H5650H2658H5158H4672H875H2416H4325 20But the herdsmen of Gerar quarreled with Isaac's herdsmen, saying, "The water is ours." So he called the name of the well Esek, because they quarreled with him.H7462H1642H7378H3327H7462H559H4325H7121H8034H875H6230H6229 21Then they dug another well, and they quarreled over that one also. So he called its name Sitnah.H2658H312H875H7378H7121H8034H7856 22And he moved from there and dug another well, and they did not quarrel over it. So he called its name Rehoboth, because he said, "For now the LORD has made room for us, and we shall be fruitful in the land."H6275H2658H312H875H7378H7121H8034H7344H559H6258H3068H7337H6509H776 23Then he went up from there to Beersheba.H5927H884 24And the LORD appeared to him the same night and said, "I am the God of your father Abraham; do not fear, for I am with you. I will bless you and multiply your descendants for My servant Abraham's sake."H3068H7200H3915H559H430H85H1H3372H854H1288H7235H2233H5650H85 25So he built an altar there and called on the name of the LORD, and he pitched his tent there; and there Isaac's servants dug a well.H1129H4196H7121H8034H3068H5186H168H3327H5650H3738H875 26Then Abimelech came to him from Gerar with Ahuzzath, one of his friends, and Phichol the commander of his army.H40H1980H1642H276H4828H6369H8269H6635 27And Isaac said to them, "Why have you come to me, since you hate me and have sent me away from you?"H3327H559H4069H935H8130H7971 28But they said, "We have certainly seen that the LORD is with you. So we said, 'Let there now be an oath between us, between you and us; and let us make a covenant with you,H559H7200H7200H3068H559H423H996H996H3772H1285 29'that you will do us no harm, since we have not touched you, and since we have done nothing to you but good and have sent you away in peace. You are now the blessed of the LORD.'"H6213H7451H5060H6213H7535H2896H7971H7965H6258H1288H3068 30So he made them a feast, and they ate and drank.H6213H4960H398H8354 31Then they arose early in the morning and swore an oath with one another; and Isaac sent them away, and they departed from him in peace.H7925H1242H7650H376H251H3327H7971H3212H7965 32It came to pass the same day that Isaac's servants came and told him about the well which they had dug, and said to him, "We have found water."H3117H3327H5650H935H5046H182H875H2658H559H4672H4325 33So he called it Shebah. Therefore the name of the city is Beersheba to this day.H7121H7656H8034H5892H884H3117 34When Esau was forty years old, he took as wives Judith the daughter of Beeri the Hittite, and Basemath the daughter of Elon the Hittite.H6215H705H8141H1121H3947H802H3067H1323H882H2850H1315H1323H356H2850 35And they were a grief of mind to Isaac and Rebekah.H4786H7307H3327H7259
