Genesis 29
Amplified Bible Help
29THEN JACOB went [briskly and cheerfully] on his way [400 miles] and came to the land of the people of the East.H3290H5375H7272H3212H776H1121H6924 2As he looked, he saw a well in the field; and behold, there were three flocks of sheep lying by it, for out of that well the flocks were watered. The stone on the well's mouth was a big one,H7200H875H7704H7969H5739H6629H7257H875H8248H5739H1419H68H875H6310 3And when all the flocks were gathered there, [the shepherds] would roll the stone from the well's mouth, water the sheep, and replace the stone on the well's mouth.H5739H622H1556H68H875H6310H8248H6629H7725H68H7725H875H6310H4725 4And Jacob said to them, My brothers, where are you from? And they said, We are from Haran.H3290H559H251H370H559H2771 5[Jacob] said to them, Do you know Laban the grandson of Nahor? And they said, We know him.H559H3045H3837H1121H5152H559H3045 6He said to them, Is it well with him? And they said, He is doing well; and behold, here comes his daughter Rachel with [his] sheep!H559H7965H559H7965H7354H1323H935H6629 7He said, The sun is still high; it is a long time yet before the flocks need be gathered [in their folds]. [Why not] water the sheep and return them to their pasture?H559H2005H1419H3117H6256H4735H622H8248H6629H3212H7462 8But they said, We cannot until all the flocks are gathered together; then [the shepherds] roll the stone from the well's mouth and we water the sheep.H559H3201H5739H622H1556H68H875H6310H8248H6629 9While he was still talking with them, Rachel came with her father's sheep, for she shepherded them.H5750H1696H7354H935H1H6629H7462 10When Jacob saw Rachel daughter of Laban, his mother's brother, and the sheep of Laban his uncle, Jacob went near and rolled the stone from the well's mouth and watered the flock of his uncle Laban.H3290H7200H7354H1323H3837H517H251H6629H3837H517H251H3290H5066H1556H68H875H6310H8248H6629H3837H517H251 11Then Jacob kissed Rachel and he wept aloud.H3290H5401H7354H5375H6963H1058 12Jacob told Rachel he was her father's relative, Rebekah's son; and she ran and told her father.H3290H5046H7354H1H251H7259H1121H7323H5046H1 13When Laban heard of the arrival of Jacob his sister's son, he ran to meet him, and embraced and kissed him and brought him to his house. And [Jacob] told Laban all these things.H3837H8085H8088H3290H269H1121H7323H7125H2263H5401H935H1004H5608H3837H1697 14Then Laban said to him, Surely you are my bone and my flesh. And [Jacob] stayed with him a month.H3837H559H389H6106H1320H3427H3117H2320 15Then Laban said to Jacob, Just because you are my relative, should you work for me for nothing? Tell me, what shall your wages be?H3837H559H3290H251H5647H2600H5046H4909 16Now Laban had two daughters; the name of the elder was Leah and the name of the younger was Rachel.H3837H8147H1323H8034H1419H3812H8034H6996H7354 17Leah's eyes were weak {and} dull looking, but Rachel was beautiful and attractive.H3812H7390H5869H7354H3303H8389H3303H4758 18And Jacob loved Rachel; so he said, I will work for you for seven years for Rachel your younger daughter.H3290H157H7354H559H5647H7651H8141H7354H6996H1323 19And Laban said, It is better that I give her to you than to another man. Stay {and} live with me.H3837H559H2896H5414H5414H312H376H3427 20And Jacob served seven years for Rachel; and they seemed to him but a few days because of the love he had for her.H3290H5647H7651H8141H7354H5869H259H3117H160 21Finally, Jacob said to Laban, Give me my wife, for my time is completed, so that I may take her to me.H3290H559H3837H3051H802H3117H4390H935 22And Laban gathered together all the men of the place and made a feast [with drinking].H3837H622H582H4725H6213H4960 23But when night came, he took Leah his daughter and brought her to [Jacob], who had intercourse with her.H6153H3947H3812H1323H935H935 24And Laban gave Zilpah his maid to his daughter Leah to be her maid.H3837H5414H1323H3812H2153H8198H8198 25But in the morning [Jacob saw his wife, and] behold, it was Leah! And he said to Laban, What is this you have done to me? Did I not work for you [all those seven years] for Rachel? Why then have you deceived {and} cheated {and} thrown me down [like this]?H1242H3812H559H3837H6213H5647H7354H7411 26And Laban said, It is not permitted in our country to give the younger [in marriage] before the elder.H3837H559H6213H4725H5414H6810H6440H1067 27Finish the [wedding feast] week [for Leah]; then we will give you [Rachel] also, and you shall work for me yet seven more years in return.H4390H2063H7620H5414H5656H5647H7651H312H8141 28So Jacob complied and fulfilled [Leah's] week; then [Laban] gave him Rachel his daughter as his wife.H3290H6213H4390H7620H5414H7354H1323H802 29(And Laban gave Bilhah his maid to Rachel his daughter to be her maid.)H3837H5414H7354H1323H1090H8198H8198 30And Jacob lived with Rachel also as his wife, and he loved Rachel more than Leah and served [Laban] another seven years [for her].H935H7354H157H7354H3812H5647H7651H312H8141 31And when the Lord saw that Leah was despised, He made her able to bear children, but Rachel was barren.H3068H7200H3812H8130H6605H7358H7354H6135 32And Leah became pregnant and bore a son and named him Reuben [See, a son!]; for she said, Because the Lord has seen my humiliation {and} affliction; now my husband will love me.H3812H2029H3205H1121H7121H8034H7205H3588H559H3588H3068H7200H6040H3588H376H157 33[Leah] became pregnant again and bore a son and said, Because the Lord heard that I am despised, He has given me this son also; and she named him Simeon [God hears].H2029H3205H1121H559H3068H8085H8130H5414H7121H8034H8095 34And she became pregnant again and bore a son and said, Now this time will my husband be a companion to me, for I have borne him three sons. Therefore he was named Levi [companion].H2029H3205H1121H559H6471H376H3867H3205H7969H1121H8034H7121H3878 35Again she conceived and bore a son, and she said, Now will I praise the Lord! So she called his name Judah [praise]; then [for a time] she ceased bearing.H2029H3205H1121H559H6471H3034H3068H7121H8034H3063H5975H3205
