Jacob and Esau Meet

33Now Jacob looked up and saw Esau coming, and four hundred men with him. So he divided the children among Leah and Rachel and the two maids.H3290H5375H5869H7200H6215H935H702H3967H376H2673H3206H3812H7354H8147H8198 2He put the maids with their children in front, then Leah with her children, and Rachel and Joseph last of all.H7760H8198H3206H7223H3812H3206H314H7354H3130H314 3He himself went on ahead of them, bowing himself to the ground seven times, until he came near his brother.H5674H6440H7812H776H7651H6471H5066H251 4But Esau ran to meet him, and embraced him, and fell on his neck and kissed him, and they wept.H6215H7323H7125H2263H5307H6677H5401H1058 5When Esau looked up and saw the women and children, he said, "Who are these with you?" Jacob said, "The children whom God has graciously given your servant."H5375H5869H7200H802H3206H559H428H559H3206H430H2603H5650 6Then the maids drew near, they and their children, and bowed down;H8198H5066H3206H7812 7Leah likewise and her children drew near and bowed down; and finally Joseph and Rachel drew near, and they bowed down.H3812H3206H5066H7812H310H5066H3130H5066H7354H7812 8Esau said, "What do you mean by all this company that I met?" Jacob answered, "To find favor with my lord."H559H4264H6298H559H4672H2580H5869H113 9But Esau said, "I have enough, my brother; keep what you have for yourself."H6215H559H3426H7227H251 10Jacob said, "No, please; if I find favor with you, then accept my present from my hand; for truly to see your face is like seeing the face of God—since you have received me with such favor.H3290H559H4672H2580H5869H3947H4503H3027H7200H6440H7200H6440H430H7521 11Please accept my gift that is brought to you, because God has dealt graciously with me, and because I have everything I want." So he urged him, and he took it.H3947H1293H935H430H2603H3605H3426H3605H6484H3947 12Then Esau said, "Let us journey on our way, and I will go alongside you."H559H5265H3212H3212 13But Jacob said to him, "My lord knows that the children are frail and that the flocks and herds, which are nursing, are a care to me; and if they are overdriven for one day, all the flocks will die.H559H113H3045H3206H7390H6629H1241H5763H1849H259H3117H6629H4191 14Let my lord pass on ahead of his servant, and I will lead on slowly, according to the pace of the cattle that are before me and according to the pace of the children, until I come to my lord in Seir."H113H5674H6440H5650H5095H328H7272H4399H6440H3206H7272H935H113H8165 15So Esau said, "Let me leave with you some of the people who are with me." But he said, "Why should my lord be so kind to me?"H6215H559H3322H5971H559H4100H4672H2580H5869H113 16So Esau returned that day on his way to Seir.H6215H7725H3117H1870H8165 17But Jacob journeyed to Succoth, and built himself a house, and made booths for his cattle; therefore the place is called Succoth.H3290H5265H5523H1129H1004H6213H5521H4735H8034H4725H7121H5523

Jacob Reaches Shechem

18Jacob came safely to the city of Shechem, which is in the land of Canaan, on his way from Paddan-aram; and he camped before the city.H3290H935H8004H5892H7927H776H3667H935H6307H2583H6440H5892 19And from the sons of Hamor, Shechem's father, he bought for one hundred pieces of money the plot of land on which he had pitched his tent.H7069H2513H7704H5186H168H3027H1121H2544H7927H1H3967H7192 20There he erected an altar and called it El-Elohe-Israel.H5324H4196H7121H415
