Genesis 34
New International Version (1984) Help
34Now Dinah, the daughter Leah had borne to Jacob, went out to visit the women of the land.H1783H1323H3812H3205H3290H3318H7200H1323H776
2When Shechem son of Hamor the Hivite, the ruler of that area, saw her, he took her and violated her.H7927H1121H2544H2340H5387H776H7200H3947H7901H6031
3His heart was drawn to Dinah daughter of Jacob, and he loved the girl and spoke tenderly to her.H5315H1692H1783H1323H3290H157H5291H1696H3820H5291
4And Shechem said to his father Hamor, "Get me this girl as my wife."H7927H559H1H2544H559H3947H3207H802
5When Jacob heard that his daughter Dinah had been defiled, his sons were in the fields with his livestock; so he kept quiet about it until they came home.H3290H8085H2930H1783H1323H1121H4735H7704H3290H2790H935
6Then Shechem's father Hamor went out to talk with Jacob.H2544H1H7927H3318H3290H1696H854
7Now Jacob's sons had come in from the fields as soon as they heard what had happened. They were filled with grief and fury, because Shechem had done a disgraceful thing in Israel by lying with Jacob's daughter--a thing that should not be done.H1121H3290H935H7704H8085H582H6087H3966H2734H6213H5039H3478H7901H3290H1323H6213
8But Hamor said to them, "My son Shechem has his heart set on your daughter. Please give her to him as his wife.H2544H1696H559H5315H1121H7927H2836H1323H5414H802
9Intermarry with us; give us your daughters and take our daughters for yourselves.H2859H5414H1323H3947H1323
10You can settle among us; the land is open to you. Live in it, trade in it, and acquire property in it."H3427H776H1961H6440H3427H5503H270
11Then Shechem said to Dinah's father and brothers, "Let me find favor in your eyes, and I will give you whatever you ask.H7927H559H1H251H4672H2580H5869H559H5414
12Make the price for the bride and the gift I am to bring as great as you like, and I'll pay whatever you ask me. Only give me the girl as my wife."H7235H3966H4119H4976H5414H559H5414H5291H802
13Because their sister Dinah had been defiled, Jacob's sons replied deceitfully as they spoke to Shechem and his father Hamor.H1121H3290H6030H7927H2544H1H4820H1696H2930H1783H269
14They said to them, "We can't do such a thing; we can't give our sister to a man who is not circumcised. That would be a disgrace to us.H559H3808H3201H6213H1697H5414H269H376H6190H2781
15We will give our consent to you on one condition only: that you become like us by circumcising all your males.H2063H225H2145H4135
16Then we will give you our daughters and take your daughters for ourselves. We'll settle among you and become one people with you.H5414H1323H3947H1323H3427H259H5971
17But if you will not agree to be circumcised, we'll take our sister and go."H8085H4135H3947H1323H1980
18Their proposal seemed good to Hamor and his son Shechem.H1697H3190H5869H2544H7927H2544H1121
19The young man, who was the most honored of all his father's household, lost no time in doing what they said, because he was delighted with Jacob's daughter.H5288H309H6213H1697H2654H3290H1323H3513H1004H1
20So Hamor and his son Shechem went to the gate of their city to speak to their fellow townsmen.H2544H7927H1121H935H8179H5892H1696H582H5892H559
21"These men are friendly toward us," they said. "Let them live in our land and trade in it; the land has plenty of room for them. We can marry their daughters and they can marry ours.H582H8003H854H3427H776H5503H776H7342H3027H6440H3947H1323H802H5414H1323
22But the men will consent to live with us as one people only on the condition that our males be circumcised, as they themselves are.H2063H582H225H3427H259H5971H2145H4135H4135
23Won't their livestock, their property and all their other animals become ours? So let us give our consent to them, and they will settle among us."H4735H7075H929H225H3427
24All the men who went out of the city gate agreed with Hamor and his son Shechem, and every male in the city was circumcised.H2544H7927H1121H8085H3318H8179H5892H2145H4135H3318H8179H5892
25Three days later, while all of them were still in pain, two of Jacob's sons, Simeon and Levi, Dinah's brothers, took their swords and attacked the unsuspecting city, killing every male.H7992H3117H3510H8147H1121H3290H8095H3878H1783H251H3947H376H2719H935H5892H983H2026H2145
26They put Hamor and his son Shechem to the sword and took Dinah from Shechem's house and left.H2026H2544H7927H1121H6310H2719H3947H1783H3947H7927H1004H3318
27The sons of Jacob came upon the dead bodies and looted the city where their sister had been defiled.H1121H3290H935H2491H962H5892H2930H269
28They seized their flocks and herds and donkeys and everything else of theirs in the city and out in the fields.H3947H6629H1241H2543H5892H7704
29They carried off all their wealth and all their women and children, taking as plunder everything in the houses.H2428H2945H802H7617H962H1004
30Then Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, "You have brought trouble on me by making me a stench to the Canaanites and Perizzites, the people living in this land. We are few in number, and if they join forces against me and attack me, I and my household will be destroyed."H3290H559H8095H3878H5916H887H3427H776H3669H6522H4962H4557H622H5221H8045H1004
31But they replied, "Should he have treated our sister like a prostitute?"H559H6213H269H2181
