Joseph’s Dream

37SO JACOB dwelt in the land in which his father had been a stranger {and} sojourner, in the land of Canaan.H3290H3427H776H1H4033H776H3667
2This is the history of the descendants of Jacob {and} this is Jacob's line. Joseph, when he was seventeen years old, was shepherding the flock with his brothers; the lad was with the sons of Bilhah and Zilpah, his father's [secondary] wives; and Joseph brought to his father a bad report of them.H8435H3290H3130H6240H7651H8141H1121H7462H6629H251H5288H1121H1090H1121H2153H1H802H3130H935H1H7451H1681
3Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his children because he was the son of his old age, and he made him a [distinctive] long tunic with sleeves.H3478H157H3130H1121H1121H2208H6213H3801H6446
4But when his brothers saw that their father loved [Joseph] more than all of his brothers, they hated him and could not say, Peace [in friendly greeting] to him {or} speak peaceably to him.H251H7200H1H157H251H8130H3201H1696H7965
5Now Joseph had a dream and he told it to his brothers, and they hated him still more.H3130H2492H2472H5046H251H8130H3254
6And he said to them, Listen now {and} hear, I pray you, this dream that I have dreamed:H559H8085H2472H2492
7We [brothers] were binding sheaves in the field, and behold, my sheaf arose and stood upright, and behold, your sheaves stood round about my sheaf and bowed down!H481H8432H485H7704H485H6965H5324H485H5437H7812H485
8His brothers said to him, Shall you indeed reign over us? Or are you going to have us as your subjects {and} dominate us? And they hated him all the more for his dreams and for what he said.H251H559H4427H4427H4910H4910H8130H3254H2472H1697
9But Joseph dreamed yet another dream and told it to his brothers [also]. He said, See here, I have dreamed again, and behold, [this time not only] eleven stars [but also] the sun and the moon bowed down {and} did reverence to me!H2492H312H2472H5608H251H559H2492H2472H8121H3394H6240H259H3556H7812
10And he told it to his father [as well as] his brethren. But his father rebuked him and said to him, What is the meaning of this dream that you have dreamed? Shall I and your mother and your brothers actually come to bow down ourselves to the earth {and} do homage to you?H5608H1H251H1H1605H559H2472H2492H517H251H935H935H7812H776
11Joseph's brothers envied him {and} were jealous of him, but his father observed the saying {and} pondered over it.H251H7065H1H8104H1697
12Joseph's brothers went to shepherd {and} feed their father's flock near Shechem.H251H3212H7462H1H6629H7927
13[One day] Israel said to Joseph, Do not your brothers shepherd my flock at Shechem? Come, and I will send you to them. And he said, Here I am.H3478H559H3130H251H7462H7927H3212H7971H559
14And [Jacob] said to him, Go, I pray you, see whether everything is all right with your brothers and with the flock; then come back and bring me word. So he sent him out of the Hebron Valley, and he came to Shechem.H559H3212H7200H7965H251H7965H6629H7725H1697H7725H7971H6010H2275H935H7927
15And a certain man found him, and behold, he had lost his way {and} was wandering in the open country. The man asked him, What are you trying to find?H376H4672H8582H7704H376H7592H559H1245
16And he said, I am looking for my brothers. Tell me, I pray you, where they are pasturing our flocks.H559H1245H251H5046H375H7462
17But the man said, [They were here, but] they have gone. I heard them say, Let us go to Dothan. And Joseph went after his brothers and found them at Dothan.H376H559H5265H2088H8085H559H3212H1886H3130H3212H310H251H4672H1886

The Plot against Joseph

18And when they saw him far off, even before he came near to them, they conspired to kill him.H7200H7350H7126H5230H4191
19And they said one to another, See, here comes this dreamer {and} master of dreams.H559H376H251H1976H1167H2472H935
20So come on now, let us kill him and throw his body into some pit; then we will say [to our father], Some wild {and} ferocious animal has devoured him; and we shall see what will become of his dreams!H3212H2026H7993H259H953H559H7451H2416H398H7200H2472
21Now Reuben heard it and he delivered him out of their hands by saying, Let us not kill him.H7205H8085H5337H3027H559H5221H5315
22And Reuben said to them, Shed no blood, but cast him into this pit {or} well that is out here in the wilderness and lay no hand on him. He was trying to get Joseph out of their hands in order to rescue him {and} deliver him again to his father.H7205H559H8210H1818H7993H953H4057H7971H3027H5337H3027H7725H1H7725
23When Joseph had come to his brothers, they stripped him of his [distinctive] long garment which he was wearing;H3130H935H251H6584H853H3130H854H3801H3801H6446
24Then they took him and cast him into the [well-like] pit which was empty; there was no water in it.H3947H7993H953H953H7386H4325
25Then they sat down to eat their lunch. When they looked up, behold, they saw a caravan of Ishmaelites [mixed Arabians] coming from Gilead, with their camels bearing gum [of the styrax tree], balm (balsam), and myrrh {or} ladanum, going on their way to carry them down to Egypt.H3427H398H3899H5375H5869H7200H736H3459H935H1568H1581H5375H5219H6875H3910H1980H3381H4714
26And Judah said to his brothers, What do we gain if we slay our brother and conceal his blood?H3063H559H251H1215H2026H251H3680H1818
27Come, let us sell him to the Ishmaelites [and Midianites, these mixed Arabians who are approaching], and let not our hand be upon him, for he is our brother and our flesh. And his brothers consented.H3212H4376H3459H3027H251H1320H251H8085
28Then as the Midianite [and Ishmaelite] merchants were passing by, the brothers pulled Joseph up and lifted him out of the well. And they sold him for twenty pieces of silver to the Ishmaelites, who took Joseph [captive] into Egypt.H5674H4084H582H5503H4900H5927H3130H953H4376H3130H3459H6242H3701H935H3130H4714
29Then Reuben [who had not been there when the brothers plotted to sell the lad] returned to the pit; and behold, Joseph was not in the pit, and he rent his clothes.H7205H7725H953H3130H953H7167H899
30He rejoined his brothers and said, The boy is not there! And I, where shall I go [to hide from my father]?H7725H251H559H3206H575H935
31Then they took Joseph's [distinctive] long garment, killed a young goat, and dipped the garment in the blood;H3947H3130H3801H7819H8163H5795H2881H3801H1818
32And they sent the garment to their father, saying, We have found this! Examine {and} decide whether it is your son's tunic or not.H7971H3801H6446H935H1H559H4672H5234H1121H3801
33He said, My son's long garment! An evil [wild] beast has devoured him; Joseph is without doubt rent in pieces.H5234H559H1121H3801H7451H2416H398H3130H2963H2963
34And Jacob tore his clothes, put on sackcloth, and mourned many days for his son.H3290H7167H8071H7760H8242H4975H56H1121H7227H3117
35And all his sons and daughters attempted to console him, but he refused to be comforted and said, I will go down to Sheol (the place of the dead) to my son mourning. And his father wept for him.H1121H1323H6965H5162H3985H5162H559H3381H7585H1121H57H1H1058
36And the Midianites [and Ishmaelites] sold [Joseph] in Egypt to Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh and the captain {and} chief executioner of the [royal] guard.H4092H4376H4714H6318H5631H6547H8269H2876
