Joseph’s Dream

37Now Jacob lived in the land where his father had sojourned, in the land of Canaan.H3290H3427H776H1H4033H776H3667 2These are [the records of] the generations of Jacob. Joseph, when seventeen years of age, was pasturing the flock with his brothers while he was [still] a youth, along with the sons of Bilhah and the sons of Zilpah, his father's wives. And Joseph brought back a bad report about them to their father.H8435H3290H3130H6240H7651H8141H1121H7462H6629H251H5288H1121H1090H1121H2153H1H802H3130H935H1H7451H1681 3Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his sons, because he was the son of his old age; and he made him a varicolored tunic.H3478H157H3130H1121H1121H2208H6213H3801H6446 4And his brothers saw that their father loved him more than all his brothers; and [so] they hated him and could not speak to him on friendly terms.H251H7200H1H157H251H8130H3201H1696H7965 5Then Joseph had a dream, and when he told it to his brothers, they hated him even more.H3130H2492H2472H5046H251H8130H3254 6And he said to them, "Please listen to this dream which I have had;H559H8085H2472H2492 7for behold, we were binding sheaves in the field, and lo, my sheaf rose up and also stood erect; and behold, your sheaves gathered around and bowed down to my sheaf. "H481H8432H485H7704H485H6965H5324H485H5437H7812H485 8Then his brothers said to him, "Are you actually going to reign over us? Or are you really going to rule over us?" So they hated him even more for his dreams and for his words.H251H559H4427H4427H4910H4910H8130H3254H2472H1697 9Now he had still another dream, and related it to his brothers, and said, "Lo, I have had still another dream; and behold, the sun and the moon and eleven stars were bowing down to me."H2492H312H2472H5608H251H559H2492H2472H8121H3394H6240H259H3556H7812 10And he related [it] to his father and to his brothers; and his father rebuked him and said to him, "What is this dream that you have had? Shall I and your mother and your brothers actually come to bow ourselves down before you to the ground?"H5608H1H251H1H1605H559H2472H2492H517H251H935H935H7812H776 11And his brothers were jealous of him, but his father kept the saying [in mind.]H251H7065H1H8104H1697 12Then his brothers went to pasture their father's flock in Shechem.H251H3212H7462H1H6629H7927 13And Israel said to Joseph, "Are not your brothers pasturing [the flock] in Shechem? Come, and I will send you to them." And he said to him, " I will go. "H3478H559H3130H251H7462H7927H3212H7971H559 14Then he said to him, "Go now and see about the welfare of your brothers and the welfare of the flock; and bring word back to me." So he sent him from the valley of Hebron, and he came to Shechem.H559H3212H7200H7965H251H7965H6629H7725H1697H7725H7971H6010H2275H935H7927 15And a man found him, and behold, he was wandering in the field; and the man asked him, "What are you looking for?"H376H4672H8582H7704H376H7592H559H1245 16And he said, "I am looking for my brothers; please tell me where they are pasturing [the flock.]"H559H1245H251H5046H375H7462 17Then the man said, "They have moved from here; for I heard [them] say, 'Let us go to Dothan.'" So Joseph went after his brothers and found them at Dothan.H376H559H5265H2088H8085H559H3212H1886H3130H3212H310H251H4672H1886

The Plot against Joseph

18When they saw him from a distance and before he came close to them, they plotted against him to put him to death.H7200H7350H7126H5230H4191 19And they said to one another, "Here comes this dreamer!H559H376H251H1976H1167H2472H935 20"Now then, come and let us kill him and throw him into one of the pits; and we will say, 'A wild beast devoured him.' Then let us see what will become of his dreams!"H3212H2026H7993H259H953H559H7451H2416H398H7200H2472 21But Reuben heard [this] and rescued him out of their hands and said, "Let us not take his life."H7205H8085H5337H3027H559H5221H5315 22Reuben further said to them, "Shed no blood. Throw him into this pit that is in the wilderness, but do not lay hands on him"— that he might rescue him out of their hands, to restore him to his father.H7205H559H8210H1818H7993H953H4057H7971H3027H5337H3027H7725H1H7725 23So it came about, when Joseph reached his brothers, that they stripped Joseph of his tunic, the varicolored tunic that was on him;H3130H935H251H6584H853H3130H854H3801H3801H6446 24and they took him and threw him into the pit. Now the pit was empty, without any water in it.H3947H7993H953H953H7386H4325 25Then they sat down to eat a meal. And as they raised their eyes and looked, behold, a caravan of Ishmaelites was coming from Gilead, with their camels bearing aromatic gum and balm and myrrh, on their way to bring [ them] down to Egypt.H3427H398H3899H5375H5869H7200H736H3459H935H1568H1581H5375H5219H6875H3910H1980H3381H4714 26And Judah said to his brothers, "What profit is it for us to kill our brother and cover up his blood?H3063H559H251H1215H2026H251H3680H1818 27"Come and let us sell him to the Ishmaelites and not lay our hands on him; for he is our brother, our [own] flesh." And his brothers listened [to him.]H3212H4376H3459H3027H251H1320H251H8085 28Then some Midianite traders passed by, so they pulled [him] up and lifted Joseph out of the pit, and sold him to the Ishmaelites for twenty [shekels] of silver. Thus they brought Joseph into Egypt.H5674H4084H582H5503H4900H5927H3130H953H4376H3130H3459H6242H3701H935H3130H4714 29Now Reuben returned to the pit, and behold, Joseph was not in the pit; so he tore his garments.H7205H7725H953H3130H953H7167H899 30And he returned to his brothers and said, "The boy is not [there;] as for me, where am I to go?"H7725H251H559H3206H575H935 31So they took Joseph's tunic, and slaughtered a male goat, and dipped the tunic in the blood;H3947H3130H3801H7819H8163H5795H2881H3801H1818 32and they sent the varicolored tunic and brought it to their father and said, "We found this; please examine [it] to [see] whether it is your son's tunic or not."H7971H3801H6446H935H1H559H4672H5234H1121H3801 33Then he examined it and said, "It is my son's tunic. A wild beast has devoured him; Joseph has surely been torn to pieces!"H5234H559H1121H3801H7451H2416H398H3130H2963H2963 34So Jacob tore his clothes, and put sackcloth on his loins, and mourned for his son many days.H3290H7167H8071H7760H8242H4975H56H1121H7227H3117 35Then all his sons and all his daughters arose to comfort him, but he refused to be comforted. And he said, "Surely I will go down to Sheol in mourning for my son." So his father wept for him.H1121H1323H6965H5162H3985H5162H559H3381H7585H1121H57H1H1058 36Meanwhile, the Midianites sold him in Egypt to Potiphar, Pharaoh's officer, the captain of the bodyguard.H4092H4376H4714H6318H5631H6547H8269H2876
