Joseph Dreams of Greatness

37Now Jacob dwelt in the land where his father was a stranger, in the land of Canaan.H3290H3427H776H1H4033H776H3667 2This is the history of Jacob. Joseph, being seventeen years old, was feeding the flock with his brothers. And the lad was with the sons of Bilhah and the sons of Zilpah, his father's wives; and Joseph brought a bad report of them to his father.H8435H3290H3130H6240H7651H8141H1121H7462H6629H251H5288H1121H1090H1121H2153H1H802H3130H935H1H7451H1681 3Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his children, because he was the son of his old age. Also he made him a tunic of many colors.H3478H157H3130H1121H1121H2208H6213H3801H6446 4But when his brothers saw that their father loved him more than all his brothers, they hated him and could not speak peaceably to him.H251H7200H1H157H251H8130H3201H1696H7965 5Now Joseph had a dream, and he told it to his brothers; and they hated him even more.H3130H2492H2472H5046H251H8130H3254 6So he said to them, "Please hear this dream which I have dreamed:H559H8085H2472H2492 7"There we were, binding sheaves in the field. Then behold, my sheaf arose and also stood upright; and indeed your sheaves stood all around and bowed down to my sheaf."H481H8432H485H7704H485H6965H5324H485H5437H7812H485 8And his brothers said to him, "Shall you indeed reign over us? Or shall you indeed have dominion over us?" So they hated him even more for his dreams and for his words.H251H559H4427H4427H4910H4910H8130H3254H2472H1697 9Then he dreamed still another dream and told it to his brothers, and said, "Look, I have dreamed another dream. And this time, the sun, the moon, and the eleven stars bowed down to me."H2492H312H2472H5608H251H559H2492H2472H8121H3394H6240H259H3556H7812 10So he told it to his father and his brothers; and his father rebuked him and said to him, "What is this dream that you have dreamed? Shall your mother and I and your brothers indeed come to bow down to the earth before you?"H5608H1H251H1H1605H559H2472H2492H517H251H935H935H7812H776 11And his brothers envied him, but his father kept the matter in mind.H251H7065H1H8104H1697

Joseph Sold by His Brothers

12Then his brothers went to feed their father's flock in Shechem.H251H3212H7462H1H6629H7927 13And Israel said to Joseph, "Are not your brothers feeding the flock in Shechem? Come, I will send you to them." So he said to him, "Here I am."H3478H559H3130H251H7462H7927H3212H7971H559 14Then he said to him, "Please go and see if it is well with your brothers and well with the flocks, and bring back word to me." So he sent him out of the Valley of Hebron, and he went to Shechem.H559H3212H7200H7965H251H7965H6629H7725H1697H7725H7971H6010H2275H935H7927 15Now a certain man found him, and there he was, wandering in the field. And the man asked him, saying, "What are you seeking?"H376H4672H8582H7704H376H7592H559H1245 16So he said, "I am seeking my brothers. Please tell me where they are feeding their flocks."H559H1245H251H5046H375H7462 17And the man said, "They have departed from here, for I heard them say, 'Let us go to Dothan.'" So Joseph went after his brothers and found them in Dothan.H376H559H5265H2088H8085H559H3212H1886H3130H3212H310H251H4672H1886 18Now when they saw him afar off, even before he came near them, they conspired against him to kill him.H7200H7350H7126H5230H4191 19Then they said to one another, "Look, this dreamer is coming!H559H376H251H1976H1167H2472H935 20"Come therefore, let us now kill him and cast him into some pit; and we shall say, 'Some wild beast has devoured him.' We shall see what will become of his dreams!"H3212H2026H7993H259H953H559H7451H2416H398H7200H2472 21But Reuben heard it, and he delivered him out of their hands, and said, "Let us not kill him."H7205H8085H5337H3027H559H5221H5315 22And Reuben said to them, "Shed no blood, but cast him into this pit which is in the wilderness, and do not lay a hand on him"—that he might deliver him out of their hands, and bring him back to his father.H7205H559H8210H1818H7993H953H4057H7971H3027H5337H3027H7725H1H7725 23So it came to pass, when Joseph had come to his brothers, that they stripped Joseph of his tunic, the tunic of many colors that was on him.H3130H935H251H6584H853H3130H854H3801H3801H6446 24Then they took him and cast him into a pit. And the pit was empty; there was no water in it.H3947H7993H953H953H7386H4325 25And they sat down to eat a meal. Then they lifted their eyes and looked, and there was a company of Ishmaelites, coming from Gilead with their camels, bearing spices, balm, and myrrh, on their way to carry them down to Egypt.H3427H398H3899H5375H5869H7200H736H3459H935H1568H1581H5375H5219H6875H3910H1980H3381H4714 26So Judah said to his brothers, "What profit is there if we kill our brother and conceal his blood?H3063H559H251H1215H2026H251H3680H1818 27"Come and let us sell him to the Ishmaelites, and let not our hand be upon him, for he is our brother and our flesh." And his brothers listened.H3212H4376H3459H3027H251H1320H251H8085 28Then Midianite traders passed by; so the brothers pulled Joseph up and lifted him out of the pit, and sold him to the Ishmaelites for twenty shekels of silver. And they took Joseph to Egypt.H5674H4084H582H5503H4900H5927H3130H953H4376H3130H3459H6242H3701H935H3130H4714 29Then Reuben returned to the pit, and indeed Joseph was not in the pit; and he tore his clothes.H7205H7725H953H3130H953H7167H899 30And he returned to his brothers and said, "The lad is no more; and I, where shall I go?"H7725H251H559H3206H575H935 31So they took Joseph's tunic, killed a kid of the goats, and dipped the tunic in the blood.H3947H3130H3801H7819H8163H5795H2881H3801H1818 32Then they sent the tunic of many colors, and they brought it to their father and said, "We have found this. Do you know whether it is your son's tunic or not?"H7971H3801H6446H935H1H559H4672H5234H1121H3801 33And he recognized it and said, "It is my son's tunic. A wild beast has devoured him. Without doubt Joseph is torn to pieces."H5234H559H1121H3801H7451H2416H398H3130H2963H2963 34Then Jacob tore his clothes, put sackcloth on his waist, and mourned for his son many days.H3290H7167H8071H7760H8242H4975H56H1121H7227H3117 35And all his sons and all his daughters arose to comfort him; but he refused to be comforted, and he said, "For I shall go down into the grave to my son in mourning." Thus his father wept for him.H1121H1323H6965H5162H3985H5162H559H3381H7585H1121H57H1H1058 36Now the Midianites had sold him in Egypt to Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh and captain of the guard.H4092H4376H4714H6318H5631H6547H8269H2876
