The Message Help
39After Joseph had been taken to Egypt by the Ishmaelites, Potiphar an Egyptian, one of Pharaoh's officials and the manager of his household, bought him from them.H3130H3381H4714H6318H5631H6547H8269H2876H376H4713H7069H3027H3459H3381 2As it turned out, GOD was with Joseph and things went very well with him. He ended up living in the home of his Egyptian master.H3068H3130H6743H376H1004H113H4713 3His master recognized that GOD was with him, saw that GOD was working for good in everything he did.H113H7200H3068H3068H6213H6743H3027 4He became very fond of Joseph and made him his personal aide. He put him in charge of all his personal affairs, turning everything over to him.H3130H4672H2580H5869H8334H6485H1004H3426H5414H3027 5From that moment on, GOD blessed the home of the Egyptian—all because of Joseph. The blessing of GOD spread over everything he owned, at home and in the fields,H227H6485H1004H3426H3068H1288H4713H1004H3130H1558H1293H3068H3426H1004H7704 6and all Potiphar had to concern himself with was eating three meals a day. Joseph was a strikingly handsome man.H5800H3130H3027H3045H3972H518H3899H398H3130H8389H3303H4758 7As time went on, his master's wife became infatuated with Joseph and one day said, "Sleep with me."H310H1697H113H802H5375H5869H3130H559H7901 8He wouldn't do it. He said to his master's wife, "Look, with me here, my master doesn't give a second thought to anything that goes on here—he's put me in charge of everything he owns.H3985H559H113H802H113H3045H1004H5414H3426H3027 9He treats me as an equal. The only thing he hasn't turned over to me is you. You're his wife, after all! How could I violate his trust and sin against God?"H1419H1004H3808H2820H3972H834H859H802H6213H1419H7451H2398H430 10She pestered him day after day after day, but he stood his ground. He refused to go to bed with her.H1696H3130H3117H3117H8085H7901H681 11On one of these days he came to the house to do his work and none of the household servants happened to be there.H3117H935H1004H6213H4399H376H582H1004 12She grabbed him by his cloak, saying, "Sleep with me!" He left his coat in her hand and ran out of the house.H8610H899H559H7901H5800H899H3027H5127H3318H2351 13When she realized that he had left his coat in her hand and run outside,H7200H5800H899H3027H5127H2351 14she called to her house servants: "Look—this Hebrew shows up and before you know it he's trying to seduce us. He tried to make love to me but I yelled as loud as I could.H7121H582H1004H559H559H7200H935H376H5680H6711H935H7901H7121H1419H6963 15With all my yelling and screaming, he left his coat beside me here and ran outside."H8085H7311H6963H7121H5800H899H681H5127H3318H2351 16She kept his coat right there until his master came home.H3240H899H681H113H935H1004 17She told him the same story. She said, "The Hebrew slave, the one you brought to us, came after me and tried to use me for his plaything.H1696H1697H559H5680H5650H935H935H6711 18When I yelled and screamed, he left his coat with me and ran outside."H7311H6963H7121H5800H899H681H5127H2351 19When his master heard his wife's story, telling him, "These are the things your slave did to me," he was furious.H113H8085H1697H802H1696H559H1697H6213H5650H639H2734 20Joseph's master took him and threw him into the jail where the king's prisoners were locked up. But there in jailH3130H113H3947H5414H1004H5470H4725H4428H615H631H1004H5470 21GOD was still with Joseph: He reached out in kindness to him; he put him on good terms with the head jailer.H3068H3130H5186H2617H5414H2580H5869H8269H1004H5470 22The head jailer put Joseph in charge of all the prisoners—he ended up managing the whole operation.H8269H1004H5470H5414H3130H3027H615H1004H5470H6213H6213 23The head jailer gave Joseph free rein, never even checked on him, because GOD was with him; whatever he did GOD made sure it worked out for the best.H8269H1004H5470H7200H3972H3027H3068H6213H3068H6743
