Genesis 47
Holman Christian Standard Bible Help
47So Joseph went and informed Pharaoh: "My father and my brothers, with their sheep and cattle and all that they have, have come from the land of Canaan and are now in the land of Goshen."H3130H935H5046H6547H559H1H251H6629H1241H935H776H3667H776H1657
2He took five of his brothers and presented them before Pharaoh.H3947H7097H251H2568H582H3322H6440H6547
3Then Pharaoh asked his brothers, "What is your occupation?" And they said to Pharaoh, "Your servants, both we and our fathers, are shepherds."H6547H559H251H4639H559H6547H5650H7462H6629H1
4Then they said to Pharaoh, "We have come to live in the land for a while because there is no grazing land for your servants' sheep, since the famine in the land of Canaan has been severe. So now, please let your servants settle in the land of Goshen."H559H6547H1481H776H935H5650H4829H6629H7458H3515H776H3667H5650H3427H776H1657
5Then Pharaoh said to Joseph, "[Now that] your father and brothers have come to you,H6547H559H3130H559H1H251H935
6the land of Egypt is open before you; settle your father and brothers in the best part of the land. They can live in the land of Goshen. If you know of any capable men among them, put them in charge of my livestock."H776H4714H6440H4315H776H3427H1H251H3427H776H1657H3427H3045H3426H582H2428H7760H8269H4735
7Joseph then brought his father Jacob and presented him before Pharaoh, and Jacob blessed Pharaoh.H3130H935H3290H1H5975H6440H6547H3290H1288H6547
8Then Pharaoh said to Jacob, "How many years have you lived?"H6547H559H3290H4100H2416H3117H8141
9Jacob said to Pharaoh, "My pilgrimage has lasted 130 years. My years have been few and hard, and they have not surpassed the years of my fathers during their pilgrimages."H3290H559H6547H3117H8141H4033H3967H7970H8141H4592H7451H3117H8141H2416H5381H3117H8141H2416H1H3117H4033
10So Jacob blessed Pharaoh and departed from Pharaoh's presence.H3290H1288H6547H3318H6440H6547
11Then Joseph settled his father and brothers in the land of Egypt and gave them property in the best part of the land, the land of Rameses, as Pharaoh had commanded.H3130H3427H1H251H5414H272H776H4714H4315H776H776H7486H6547H6680
12And Joseph provided his father, his brothers, and all his father's household with food for their dependents.H3130H3557H1H251H1H1004H3899H6310H2945
13But there was no food in that entire region, for the famine was very severe. The land of Egypt and the land of Canaan were exhausted by the famine.H3899H776H7458H3966H3515H776H4714H776H3667H3856H6440H7458
14Joseph collected all the money to be found in the land of Egypt and the land of Canaan in exchange for the grain they were purchasing, and he brought the money to Pharaoh's house.H3130H3950H3701H4672H776H4714H776H3667H7668H7666H3130H935H3701H6547H1004
15When the money from the land of Egypt and the land of Canaan was gone, all the Egyptians came to Joseph and said, "Give us food. Why should we die here in front of you? The money is gone!"H3701H8552H776H4714H776H3667H4714H935H3130H559H3051H3899H4191H3701H656
16But Joseph said, "Give me your livestock. Since the money is gone, I will give you food in exchange for your livestock."H3130H559H3051H4735H5414H4735H3701H656
17So they brought their livestock to Joseph, and he gave them food in exchange for the horses, the herds of sheep, the herds of cattle, and the donkeys. That year he provided them with food in exchange for all their livestock.H935H4735H3130H3130H5414H3899H5483H6629H4735H1241H2543H5095H3899H4735H8141
18When that year was over, they came the next year and said to him, "We cannot hide from our lord that the money is gone and that all our livestock belongs to our lord. There is nothing left for our lord except our bodies and our land.H8141H8552H935H8145H8141H559H3582H113H3701H8552H113H413H4735H929H7604H6440H113H1472H127
19Why should we perish here in front of you— both us and our land? Buy us and our land in exchange for food. Then we with our land will become Pharaoh's slaves. Give us seed so that we can live and not die, and so that the land won't become desolate."H4191H5869H127H7069H127H3899H127H5650H6547H5414H2233H2421H4191H127H3456
20In this way, Joseph acquired all the land in Egypt for Pharaoh, because every Egyptian sold his field since the famine was so severe for them. The land became Pharaoh's,H3130H7069H127H4714H6547H4714H4376H376H7704H7458H2388H776H6547
21and Joseph moved the people to the cities from one end of Egypt to the other.H5971H5674H5892H7097H1366H4714H7097
22The only land he didn't acquire was that of the priests, for it was their allotment from Pharaoh. They lived off the allotment Pharaoh had given them; therefore they did not sell their land.H127H3548H7069H3548H2706H6547H398H2706H6547H5414H4376H127
23Then Joseph said to the people, "Understand today that I have acquired you and your land for Pharaoh. Here is seed for you. Sow it in the land.H3130H559H5971H7069H853H3117H127H6547H1887H2233H2232H127
24At harvest, you are to give a fifth of it to Pharaoh, and four-fifths will be yours as seed for the field and as food for yourselves, your households, and your dependents."H8393H5414H2549H6547H702H3027H2233H7704H400H1004H398H2945
25And they said, "You have saved our lives. We have found favor in our lord's eyes and will be Pharaoh's slaves."H559H2421H4672H2580H5869H113H6547H5650
26So Joseph made it a law, still in effect today in the land of Egypt, that a fifth [of the produce] belongs to Pharaoh. Only the priests' land does not belong to Pharaoh.H3130H7760H2706H127H4714H3117H6547H2569H7535H127H3548H6547
27Israel settled in the land of Egypt, in the region of Goshen. They acquired property in it and became fruitful and very numerous.H3478H3427H776H4714H776H1657H270H6509H7235H3966
28Now Jacob lived in the land of Egypt 17 years, and his life span was 147 years.H3290H2421H776H4714H6240H7651H8141H2416H3117H3290H3967H705H8141H7651H8141
29When the time drew near for him to die, he called his son Joseph and said to him, "If I have found favor in your eyes, put your hand under my thigh [and promise me] that you will deal with me in faithful love. Do not bury me in Egypt.H3117H7126H3478H4191H7121H1121H3130H559H4672H2580H5869H7760H3027H3409H6213H2617H571H6912H4714
30When I lie down with my fathers, carry me away from Egypt and bury me in their burial place." Joseph answered, "I will do what you have asked."H7901H1H5375H4714H6912H6900H559H6213H1697
31And Jacob said, "Swear to me." So Joseph swore to him. Then Israel bowed [in thanks] at the head of his bed.H559H7650H7650H3478H7812H4296H7218
