Israel’s Last Days

48SOME TIME after these things occurred, someone told Joseph, Behold, your father is sick. And he took with him his two sons, Manasseh and Ephraim [and went to Goshen].H310H1697H559H3130H1H2470H3947H8147H1121H4519H669 2When Jacob was told, Your son Joseph has come to you, Israel collected his strength and sat up on the bed.H5046H3290H559H1121H3130H935H3478H2388H3427H4296 3And Jacob said to Joseph, God Almighty appeared to me at Luz [Bethel] in the land of Canaan and blessed meH3290H559H3130H410H7706H7200H3870H776H3667H1288 4And said to me, Behold, I will make you fruitful and multiply you, and I will make you a multitude of people and will give this land to your descendants after you as an everlasting possession.H559H6509H7235H5414H6951H5971H5414H776H2233H310H5769H272 5And now your two sons, [Ephraim and Manasseh], who were born to you in the land of Egypt before I came to you in Egypt, are mine. [I am adopting them, and now] as Reuben and Simeon, [they] shall be mine.H8147H1121H669H4519H3205H776H4714H5704H935H4714H7205H8095 6But other sons who may be born after them shall be your own; and they shall be called after the names of these [two] brothers {and} reckoned as belonging to them [when they come] into their inheritance.H4138H3205H310H7121H5921H8034H251H5159 7And as for me, when I came from Padan, Rachel died at my side in the land of Canaan on the way, when yet there was but a little way to come to Ephrath; and I buried her there on the way to Ephrath, that is, Bethlehem.H935H6307H7354H4191H776H3667H1870H5750H3530H776H935H672H6912H1870H672H1035 8When Israel [almost blind] saw Joseph's sons, he said, Who are these?H3478H7200H3130H1121H559 9And Joseph said to his father, They are my sons, whom God has given me in this place. And he said, Bring them to me, I pray you, that I may bless them.H3130H559H1H1121H430H5414H559H3947H1288 10Now Israel's eyes were dim from age, so that he could not see. And Joseph brought them near to him, and he kissed and embraced them.H5869H3478H3513H2207H3201H7200H5066H5401H2263 11Israel said to Joseph, I had not thought that I would see your face, but see, God has shown me your offspring also.H3478H559H3130H6419H7200H6440H430H7200H2233 12Then Joseph took [the boys] from [his father's embrace] and he bowed [before him] with his face to the earth.H3130H3318H5973H1290H7812H639H776 13Then Joseph took both [boys], Ephraim with his right hand toward Israel's left, and Manasseh with his left hand toward Israel's right, and brought them close to him.H3130H3947H8147H669H3225H3478H8040H4519H8040H3478H3225H5066 14And Israel reached out his right hand and laid it on the head of Ephraim, who was the younger, and his left hand on Manasseh's head, crossing his hands intentionally, for Manasseh was the firstborn.H3478H7971H3225H7896H669H7218H6810H8040H4519H7218H7919H3027H7919H4519H1060 15Then [Jacob] blessed Joseph and said, God [Himself], before Whom my fathers Abraham and Isaac lived {and} walked habitually, God [Himself], Who has [been my Shepherd and has led and] fed me from the time I came into being until this day,H1288H3130H559H430H6440H1H85H3327H1980H430H7462H5750H3117 16The redeeming Angel [that is, the Angel the Redeemer--not a created being but the Lord Himself] Who has redeemed me continually from every evil, bless the lads! And let my name be perpetuated in them [may they be worthy of having their names coupled with mine], and the names of my fathers Abraham and Isaac; and let them become a multitude in the midst of the earth.H4397H1350H7451H1288H5288H8034H7121H8034H1H85H3327H1711H7230H7130H776 17When Joseph saw that his father laid his right hand on Ephraim's head, it displeased him; and he held up his father's hand to move it to Manasseh's head.H3130H7200H1H7896H3225H3027H7218H669H3415H5869H8551H1H3027H5493H669H7218H4519H7218 18And Joseph said, Not so, my father, for this is the firstborn; put your right hand upon his head.H3130H559H1H1H1060H7760H3225H7218 19But his father refused and said, I know, my son, I know. He also shall become a people and shall be great; but his younger brother shall be greater than he, and his offspring shall become a multitude of nations.H1H3985H559H3045H1121H3045H5971H1431H199H6996H251H1431H2233H4393H1471 20And he blessed them that day, saying, By you shall Israel bless [one another], saying, May God make you like Ephraim and like Manasseh. And he set Ephraim before Manasseh.H1288H3117H559H3478H1288H559H430H7760H669H4519H7760H669H6440H4519 21And Israel said to Joseph, Behold, I [am about to] die, but God will be with you and bring you again to the land of your fathers.H3478H559H3130H4191H430H7725H776H1 22Moreover, I have given to you [Joseph] one portion [Shechem, one mountain slope] more than any of your brethren, which I took [reclaiming it] out of the hand of the Amorites with my sword and with my bow.H5414H259H7926H251H3947H3027H567H2719H7198
