Command to Rebuild the Temple

In the second year of King Darius, on the first day of the sixth month, the word of the LORD came through Haggai the prophet to Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, the governor of Judah, and to Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest:H8147H8141H1867H4428H8345H2320H259H3117H2320H1697H3068H3027H2292H5030H2216H1121H7597H6346H3063H3091H1121H3087H1419H3548H559
"The LORD of Hosts says this: These people say: The time has not come for the house of the LORD to be rebuilt."H559H3068H6635H559H5971H559H6256H935H6256H3068H1004H1129
The word of the LORD came through Haggai the prophet:H1697H3068H3027H2292H5030H559
"Is it a time for you yourselves to live in your paneled houses, while this house lies in ruins?"H6256H3427H5603H1004H1004H2720
Now, the LORD of Hosts says this: "Think carefully about your ways:H559H3068H6635H7760H3824H1870
You have planted much but harvested little. You eat but never have enough to be satisfied. You drink but never have enough to become drunk. You put on clothes but never have enough to get warm. The wage earner [puts his] wages into a bag with a hole in it."H2232H7235H935H4592H398H7654H8354H7937H3847H2527H7936H7936H6872H5344
The LORD of Hosts says this: "Think carefully about your ways.H559H3068H6635H7760H3824H1870
Go up into the hills, bring down lumber, and build the house. Then I will be pleased with it and be glorified," says the LORD.H5927H2022H935H6086H1129H1004H7521H3513H559H3068
"You expected much, but then it amounted to little. When you brought [the harvest] to your house, I ruined it. Why?" [This is] the declaration of the LORD of Hosts. "Because My house still lies in ruins, while each of you is busy with his own house.H6437H7235H4592H935H1004H5301H5002H3068H6635H3282H1004H2720H7323H376H1004
So on your account, the skies have withheld the dew and the land its crops.H8064H3607H2919H776H3607H2981
I have summoned a drought on the fields and the hills, on the grain, new wine, olive oil, and whatever the ground yields, on the people and animals, and on all that your hands produce."H7121H2721H776H2022H1715H8492H3323H127H3318H120H929H3018H3709

The People’s Response

Then Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, the high priest Joshua son of Jehozadak, and the entire remnant of the people obeyed the voice of the LORD their God and the words of the prophet Haggai, because the LORD their God had sent him. So the people feared the LORD.H2216H1121H7597H3091H1121H3087H1419H3548H7611H5971H8085H6963H3068H430H1697H2292H5030H3068H430H7971H5971H3372H6440H3068
Haggai, the LORD's messenger, delivered the LORD's message to the people, "I am with you"— the LORD's declaration.H559H2292H3068H4397H3068H4400H5971H559H5002H3068
The LORD stirred up the spirit of Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, the spirit of the high priest Joshua son of Jehozadak, and the spirit of all the remnant of the people. They began work on the house of Yahweh of Hosts, their God,H3068H5782H7307H2216H1121H7597H6346H3063H7307H3091H1121H3087H1419H3548H7307H7611H5971H935H6213H4399H1004H3068H6635H430
on the twenty-fourth day of the sixth month, in the second year of King Darius.H702H6242H3117H8345H2320H8147H8141H1867H4428
