Sennacherib Invades Judah

36In the fourteenth year of King Hezekiah, Sennacherib king of Assyria came up against all the fortified cities of Judah and took them.H702H6240H8141H4428H2396H5576H4428H804H5927H1219H5892H3063H8610 2And the king of Assyria sent the Rabshakeh from Lachish to King Hezekiah at Jerusalem, with a great army. And he stood by the conduit of the upper pool on the highway to the Washer's Field.H4428H804H7971H7262H3923H3389H4428H2396H3515H2426H5975H8585H5945H1295H4546H3526H7704 3And there came out to him Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, who was over the household, and Shebna the secretary, and Joah the son of Asaph, the recorder.H3318H471H2518H1121H1004H7644H5608H3098H623H1121H2142 4And the Rabshakeh said to them, "Say to Hezekiah, 'Thus says the great king, the king of Assyria: On what do you rest this trust of yours?H7262H559H559H2396H559H1419H4428H4428H804H986H982 5Do you think that mere words are strategy and power for war? In whom do you now trust, that you have rebelled against me?H559H8193H1697H6098H1369H4421H982H4775 6Behold, you are trusting in Egypt, that broken reed of a staff, which will pierce the hand of any man who leans on it. Such is Pharaoh king of Egypt to all who trust in him.H982H4938H7533H7070H4714H376H5564H935H3709H5344H6547H4428H4714H982 7But if you say to me, "We trust in the LORD our God," is it not he whose high places and altars Hezekiah has removed, saying to Judah and to Jerusalem, "You shall worship before this altar"?H559H982H3068H430H1116H4196H2396H5493H559H3063H3389H7812H6440H4196 8Come now, make a wager with my master the king of Assyria: I will give you two thousand horses, if you are able on your part to set riders on them.H6148H113H4428H804H5414H505H5483H3201H5414H7392 9How then can you repulse a single captain among the least of my master's servants, when you trust in Egypt for chariots and for horsemen?H7725H6440H259H6346H6996H113H5650H982H4714H7393H6571 10Moreover, is it without the LORD that I have come up against this land to destroy it? The LORD said to me, Go up against this land and destroy it.'"H5927H1107H3068H776H7843H3068H559H5927H776H7843 11Then Eliakim, Shebna, and Joah said to the Rabshakeh, "Please speak to your servants in Aramaic, for we understand it. Do not speak to us in the language of Judah within the hearing of the people who are on the wall."H559H471H7644H3098H7262H1696H5650H762H8085H1696H3066H241H5971H2346 12But the Rabshakeh said, "Has my master sent me to speak these words to your master and to you, and not to the men sitting on the wall, who are doomed with you to eat their own dung and drink their own urine?"H7262H559H113H7971H113H1696H1697H582H3427H2346H398H2716H6675H8354H4325H7272H7890 13Then the Rabshakeh stood and called out in a loud voice in the language of Judah: "Hear the words of the great king, the king of Assyria!H7262H5975H7121H1419H6963H3066H559H8085H1697H1419H4428H4428H804 14Thus says the king: 'Do not let Hezekiah deceive you, for he will not be able to deliver you.H559H4428H2396H5377H3201H5337 15Do not let Hezekiah make you trust in the LORD by saying, "The LORD will surely deliver us. This city will not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria."H2396H982H3068H559H3068H5337H5337H5892H5414H3027H4428H804 16Do not listen to Hezekiah. For thus says the king of Assyria: Make your peace with me and come out to me. Then each one of you will eat of his own vine, and each one of his own fig tree, and each one of you will drink the water of his own cistern,H8085H2396H559H4428H804H6213H1293H3318H398H376H1612H376H8384H8354H376H4325H953 17until I come and take you away to a land like your own land, a land of grain and wine, a land of bread and vineyards.H935H3947H776H776H776H1715H8492H776H3899H3754 18Beware lest Hezekiah mislead you by saying, "The LORD will deliver us." Has any of the gods of the nations delivered his land out of the hand of the king of Assyria?H2396H5496H559H3068H5337H376H430H1471H5337H776H3027H4428H804 19Where are the gods of Hamath and Arpad? Where are the gods of Sepharvaim? Have they delivered Samaria out of my hand?H430H2574H774H430H5617H5337H8111H3027 20Who among all the gods of these lands have delivered their lands out of my hand, that the LORD should deliver Jerusalem out of my hand?'"H430H776H5337H776H3027H3068H5337H3389H3027 21But they were silent and answered him not a word, for the king's command was, "Do not answer him."H2790H6030H1697H4428H4687H559H6030 22Then Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, who was over the household, and Shebna the secretary, and Joah the son of Asaph, the recorder, came to Hezekiah with their clothes torn, and told him the words of the Rabshakeh.H935H471H1121H2518H1004H7644H5608H3098H1121H623H2142H2396H899H7167H5046H1697H7262
